Ian Liddell

Ian Liddell is a structural engineer. He studied mechanical sciences

at Cambridge University followed by a diploma in concrete structures

at Imperial College, London. He was one ofthe founding partners of

Buro Happold and the designer of London's Millennium Dome as well

as project engineer on the Sydney Opera House, playing a significant

role in the form finding of the iconic roofs. Liddell continues to work

as a consultant for Buro Happold. He received the Gold Medal of the

Institution of Structural Engineers in 1999 and is a Royal Academy

Visiting Professor of Engineering Design at Cambridge University School

of Engineering.

Stefan Lehnert

Dr.Stefan Lehnert studied mechanical engineering at Hanover Univer-

sity ofTechnology. An additional degree in business administration and

a Ph.D. thesis on strategic management processes at Braunschweig

University ofTechnology laid the groundworks for establishing the Vector

Foiltec Group in 1982. Since starting the development of ETFEsystems

for architectural applications he has been a director and joint partner

of Vector Foiltec in Bremen. His expertise in mechanical engineering

helped in the development of ETFEwelding equipment and his life-long

experience in developing high level ocean racing sails was instrumental

todeveloping technical solutions for ETFEfoil

Annette

Annette LeCuyer is an architect, critic and educator. She studied at the

Architectural Association, worked in practice in London and has written

extensively for architectural publications in Europe and North America.

She is the author of several books on contemporary architecture and

building technology including Steel and Beyond - New Strategies for

Metals in Architecture and is a regular contributor to TheArchitectural

Review. She is a professor of architecture atthe University at Buffalo,

Ben Morris is an architect, designer, and maker of things. He studied

at Homsey College of Art and various schools of architecture. Morris is

a director and joint partner of Vector Foiltec in London and has been

The collaboration of Ben Morris and Stefan Lehnert at

Vector Foiltec, who have generously contributed time, en-

ergy and insight gained from many years of working with

ETFE, has been essential to the realization of this book.

The contribution of Ian Liddell, a former director of Buro

foundations for successful applications of this innovative

technology, and for his reflection upon its recent history
