Sunderlands facilities include state of the

    art equipment for pharmaceutics, medicinal

    chemistry and pharmacology.

This course is based in the Sciences Complex at

our City Campus, which boasts multi-disciplinary

    laboratories and cutting-edge equipment thanks

    to multi-million pound investments.

    It was a brilliant experience

to study at the University ofSunderland. All the students

have a lot of support and we

    gained all the relevant knowledge

    for our future life.

    Christina Gkali, Graduate

    Our state-o-the-art spectroscopic acility allows

us to conrm the structures o new molecules

    that could be potential pharmaceutical

products and to investigate the structures o

potential medicinal substances that have been

    isolated rom plants.

    We are equipped with Liquid

    Chromatography-Nuclear Magnetic

    Resonance and Mass Spectroscopy

    (LCNMR/MS) platorms; an exceptional

acility or a university. We also have low

    and high resolution mass spectrometry,

    nuclear magnetic resonance and elemental

    analysis equipment.

Our acilities allow students to gain

    hands-on experience o a wide range

o analytical techniques such as atomic

    absorption spectroscopy and inra-

red spectroscopy, which are o great

    importance in determining both ionic/metal

    content o pharmaceuticals and simple

    chemical structures.

You will also gain experience o

    revolutionary protein and DNA separation

techniques, as well as Ultra High

    Perormance Liquid Chromatography

    and Gas Chromatography or separating

    unknown chemical mixtures.

    We have pharmaceutical-related equipment

or wet granulation, spray drying, capsule

    lling, tablet making, mixing inhalation,

    lm coating and reeze drying.

    As well as standard pharmacopoeial

test methods, such as dissolution testing,

riability and disintegration, we also oer

    highly sophisticated test methods. These

    include rheometry, thermal analysis

    (dierential scanning calorimetry and

hot stage microscopy), tests or powder

    fow, laser diraction, photon correlation

    spectroscopy, image analysis and laser

    conocal microscopy.

    Our highly technical apparatus will

give you rst-hand experience o the

principles o drug action and the eects

o drugs on pharmacological and cellular

models. As a result, you gain a better

understanding o the eects o drugs

    on specic receptors located throughout

    the human body and related

    physiological eects.

    Formulate yourcareer prospects

The MPharm course is a stepping stone

    towards registration as a pharmacist.

Pharmacists are experts in the use o

    medicines who provide medications to

patients and help them understand what

the medications are, and how they should

be taken. A good pharmacist has mastery

    o scientic knowledge, clinical expertise

    and interpersonal communication.

Around 70% o our graduates will go on

to work in community pharmacy. Most o

the remainder work in primary or secondarycare, or become industrial pharmacists or

    progress to research degrees.

    Community pharmacy: this involves

working in pharmacies on high streets

or in large stores. You will dispense

    prescriptions, deal with minor ailments,

advise on the use o medicines and liaise

    with other health proessionals

Primary care: this involves working in

    General Practice surgeries. Roles include

    Medicines Management Pharmacists,

    who are responsible or prescribing

    budgets and the development o

    prescribing directives

    Secondary care: this involves working

    in hospitals to supply medicines,

    manage clinics, provide drug inormation

    and prescribe medicines

    Industrial pharmacists are involved

in areas such as Research &

    Development, Quality Assurance

    and product registration

    Research degrees can be undertaken

    in many aspects o pharmacy.

    Sunderland Pharmacy School oers

excellent acilities and a wide range

    o research expertise.

a Certicate o Good Conduct rom your

home police orce is necessary. All overseas

students will then be required to obtaina Disclosure and Barring Service check

six months ater starting the programme.

A Fitness to Practise inormation pack

    containing the relevant documents will

be sent to you by the University o

Sunderland once you hold a conditional

rm oer with us. These orms are then

    reviewed alongside your application, and

you must meet both the academic and

    tness to practise requirements beore

you will be given an unconditional oer.

These checks enable us to make saer

    recruitment decisions by identiying

candidates who may be unsuitable or
