Thank you The family would like to thank all those who sent prayers, condolences and hugs. We would like to say thank you to the cooks, fire watch- ers and the ones that helped at the burial site. The food and cash donations were also a great gift from all those that donated. Rest in Peace, Margaret Charlie. Turning off city sprinklers Last Friday, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations issued an info bulletin for the Merritt area, regarding the Coldwater River Sys- tem nearing level 4, or extremely dry drought conditions. So with the prov. govt urging surface- and ground-water users within the Cold- water River system & Merritt boundaries to voluntarily reduce consumption by 30%, the City of Merritt turned off all ir- rigation to its parks Friday afternoon — indefinitely. The water spray park is op- erating as normal, flowers will still be hand-watered. There is lots of water conservation in- formation available from City Hall. [Ed.: I’d say Councillor Ginny Prowal called it, when she asked council to go to 2- day-a-week sprinklering back at the end of June! It’s NEVER is too wet to not conserve water! Personally, I think Merritt should simply skip the 3-days-a-week sprinklering & go directly to 2-days-a-week in the spring as the standard. And if there’s additional rain, it’s fine anyway…] BC’s strong international tourism The provincial govt is reporting that the number of overnight international visitors to BC surpassed the 2million mark for the first 6 months of 2016. According to Statistics Canada, 2,307,624 visitors came to BC from Janu- ary to June, a 12.4% increase (254,935 ad- ditional visitors) over the same period last year. During the same time frame, other highlights include visits from the United States, which were up 12.4%, visits from Mexico up 38.6% and visits from China up 22%. Also, 656,676 international visitors came to BC in June alone – an 8.6% in- crease compared to June 2015. There were increases in visitors from a number of markets in June over the same month in 2015: China, up 48.8%; Mexico, up 40.2%; Japan, up 22.6%; South Korea, up 21.8%; India, up 20.9%; Australia, up 19.7%; Europe, up 3.9%; US, up 4.4%. A number of factors are contributing to the growth in visitor numbers, includ- ing increased air access and capacity to Vancouver, a low Canadian dollar and Destination BC’s new international mar- keting strategy. Good Ol' Country Comfort, When Country Music Was Still Western Theatre Kelowna Society’s fall revue at Black Box Theatre features the songs of the artists who helped make country music a legitimate genre. In the initial stages it was simply called ‘Western’ music, later becoming ‘Country & West- ern’. Good ‘Ol Country Comfort will return to the roots, when artists performed with acoustic instruments — the music of Ray Price, Eddie Arnold, Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Kitty Wells, Don Williams, Merle Haggard and others, along with those who helped establish the sound, Hank William and The Sons of the Pioneers. Written and directed by Jeff Samin, the cast will feature Debby Helf, Corinne Marks, Ashley Lewicki, Gloriah Poulette, Shannon Bracken, Ian Krebs and Rob Crawford, TKS, Darryl Davies and Rick & Pat Jones. Tickets $25+service charges, available online at www.selectyourtickets.com. The show runs Sept.14-Oct. 2, with evening shows at 7:30pm and a Sunday matinee at 2pm. FMI www.theatrekelowna.org Large Truck A large truck was tailing my son as he drove through town with a female classmate. The truck matched them turn for turn, down every street. My son's concern grew to alarm when the menacing-looking driver pulled next to him at a light, leaned out his window, and glared into his car. After a long, hard stare, the man grinned and called to my son, "Sorry, kid, I thought that was my daughter." Child Bearing Academics During a test, the college professor noticed that a married student, who was quite pregnant, kept rubbing her side. After class, before she left, the teacher asked her, "Are you okay? I noticed you were holding onto your side." "Oh, I'm fine," the student an- swered. "It's just that my baby was pushing his foot up and down my ribs, and it hurt a little." "Well, that's good," the professor said, feeling relieved. "Yes," she continued. "It's strange. He normally sleeps during your class too." Name That Baby When Diane found out she was pregnant, she told the good news to anyone who would listen. Her 4-year-old son overheard some of his parents private conversations. One day, when Diane and her 4-year-old were shopping, a woman asked the little boy if he was excited about the new baby. "Yes!" the 4-year-old said, "and I know what we are going to name it, too. If it's a girl we're going to call her Christina, and if it's another boy we're going to call it quits!"
