[RE]FUELING ERIE BOULEVARDSYRACUSE, NEW YORK

As gas prices continue to rise and dependence on fossil fuels diminishes, gas stations will be forced to adapt or close. [Re]fueling Erie Boulevard is looking at ways of reusing existing gas station infrastructure in ways that will reconfigure, re-activate, and re-ecologize Erie Boulevard.

Gas stations have a cookie-cutter architecture made apparent by the recognizable canopy. The thick plane of the gas station canopy is suitable for new programming while the ground plane is detoxified through phytoremediation. New businesses will emerge in the place of the former gas stations when oil becomes scarce. The canopy will play a more vital role for the new businesses; it will transition from being passive, in the form of shelter, and become a more active feature in the gas station landscape.

SYRACUSE RECEIVES OVER 121 INCHES OF SNOW PER YEAR ON AVERAGE, MORE THAN ANY OTHER LARGE CITY IN THE UNITED STATES. THE GAS STATION WILL SERVE AS A SKELETON FOR A SEASONAL ARCHITECTURE WHERE SNOW WILL NO LONGER BE DISCARDED BUT TREATED AS A CONSTRUCTION MEDIUM

HOTEL SYRACUSE PLAZASYRACUSE, NEW YORK

The Hotel Syracuse is one of the most iconic and architecturally significant buildings in downtown Syracuse, but unfortunately has sat derelict since the 1980s. With renovations and retrofitting on the hotel underway, the city is looking at potential development on the adjacent properties. The Hotel Syracuse Plaza is a proposal for a new public space that will create a connection between the hotel and Syracuse’s main street. The plaza would replace a surface parking lot with programmable space that reinvigorates the downtown and spurs future development in the district.

MONTEZUMA HERITAGE PARK

Montezuma Heritage Park presents multiple layers of natural & cultural history through engaging and informing design. The park is conceived as a visitor destination that connects to regional tourist activities and provides educational and diverse recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors. In addition, the park preserves the history of Montezuma by celebrating the community’s early industrial innovations and its role in the expansion of the Erie Canal. Identifying, protecting, maintaining, and restoring areas of ecological significance on the site are key concepts for Montezuma Heritage Park.

The planting scheme is based off a purple, blue, and yellow color pallet. These colors have positive effects on the mind. They reduce stress and anxiety and have been known to provide a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The plantings are placed in a way that creates a series of smaller spaces for people to be at ease and enjoy while still feeling a part of the Hutchings campus. The selected plants are low maintenance and perennial making this plan relatively easy to maintain.

PLANT WARFARE QUEBEC, CANADA

As a submission to the International Garden Festival, this garden is abstracting the question, “Do you prefer formal or native design ideologies?” The garden will suggest to visitors how the two ideologies are in tension with one other. Most individuals have a garden preference, but articulating that preference is seldom straightforward. The visible display of contrasting ideologies will provoke reflection and conversation that leads each visitor to deeper understanding of their particular taste in garden design.

ARB QUADSYRACUSE, NEW YORKSUNY-ESF is in the process of expanding its campus westward. Over time the campus has expanded its footprint by stepping down the hill on a series of terraces. The university has purchased a large surface parking lot from Syracuse University which offers the potential for a culminating terrace on campus. Having recently built a dormitory adjacent to the site, SUNY-ESF plans to construct a new research building on the lot in the next few years. Due to the campus’s steep terrain and the existing city street grid, connection to the rest of campus is a major issue for the building’s future occupants and the 450 students living in the dormitory. The vital link between the new quad and the rest of campus has been conceived as an elevator and bus stop hybrid that will provide access not only to SUNY-ESF but also to Syracuse University and downtown.
