About Nai Talim: The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi was never satisfied with the British System Of Education in India. He knew that it could not serve the socio economic need of the country and felt the need of a new Education System in the country for the improvement of the deplorable condition of the education in India. In June 31, 1937 he expressed his views in the ‘Harijan’- a weekly journal published by Gandhiji, which later on developed into the Wardha Scheme of Basic Education. Gandhiji placed his Basic Education System to the nation in the Wardha Conference 1937. The conference of 1945 at Sebagram characterized Basic Education as ‘Education for life’. The conference considered it as a radical and important revolution in social and economic structure of the Indian society i.e. creating a new way of life. Since then Basic Education came to be known as “Nai Talim”. Gandhiji wanted to build a strong foundation In India and focused on an education based on the National Culture and Civilization of India. Gandhiji’s Nai Talim aims at making a child self reliant by enabling him to use his acquired knowledge and skills in practical affairs of life. Gandhiji recommended for free and compulsory education to every child at the primary level through the mother tongue of the children and said that it could be made self supporting without any financial burden by imparting education through useful and productive crafts. The idea was if the craft is taught efficiently and thoroughly, it would enable the school to pay the cost of the salaries of the trachers by selling the prepared items. At the same time it aimed to accord dignity of labor and ensure modest and honest livelihood for the student after leaving the school. According to Nai Talim, all the education should centre round some basic craft with due regard to the capacity of the children and the needs of the locality. The craft suggested are – 1. Spinning and weaving 2. Carpentry 3. Agriculture 4. Leather work 5. Fruit and flower cultivation 6. Culturing fish 7. Pottery 8. Any handicraft according to the local need

Nai Talim is a blend of learning, work and locally available technology which is today called as ‘Socially Useful Productive Works’ (SUPW). Tough Nai Talim revolves around craft education the function of Nai Talim was not merely to teach an occupation, but through it to develop the whole man. Through Basic Education or Nai Talim, Gandhiji wanted to remove the barrier of class and caste, between educated and non- educated, between manual and intellectual work and to bring social soliditary and national integration. He has not given any place for English and religious education in his basic education. He wanted to create a child centered and activity centered education system where the children feel free to learn. Basic education also aimed at the inculcation of democratic, social and moral values in the child, respect for peace and non- violence and bring harmonious development of the body, mind and soul.
