Dear Reader
The Ziegler Paper Mill environmental report Z-Eco submits
an annual account of the environmental areas in paper pro-
duction at CH-Grellingen. The present report describes the
work situation in 2013. In contrast to Paper Profile* that pro-
vides you with a cradle-to-gate environmental balance, it of-
fers a deeper insight into our processes.
The Z-Eco report may not only be important to you, but cer-
tainly to the Ziegler Paper Mill staff. For the employees of
Ziegler Paper Mill and for me personally, the Z-Eco report is
a document setting out in black and white the results of nu-
merous efforts in terms of environmental measures. These
results allow the workforce to look back with pride on the
achievements of recent years. All our experts deserve great
praise. In recent years it has always been possible to im-
prove the production process of paper with intelligent
measures.
The year 2013 offered no substantial changes. However, the
environmental changes reflect changes in the market.
Though the main production volume will continue to be in
the fields of Corporate and Natural Design, the production
increase lies in the field of paper specialties. In the year 2013
we were able to launch our new Z-Offset Rough (a paper
with a very special haptic) and the new high speed inkjet
qualities Z-Advance and Z-Advance Unique. A look at our
development department shows that qualities with special
surface treatments for very special applications are becom-
ing more and more important in the market.
These changes in the field of paper have also had an impact
on production processes, which means that the wastewa-
ter pre-treatment must be adjusted. Firstly, process-tech-
nological adjustments regarding the coating colors are nec-
essary. Secondly, the chemistry of the flocculation process
must be changed. In the year under review we were able to
define measures regarding the solid reduction and find so-
lutions after initial tests. The study on the wastewater floc-
culation carried out in 2013 showed that we could sucess-
fully reduce the TOC load-per-cubic-meter by 13.1%, which
was introduced 2010.
More details can be found in this report. I will appreciate
your comments and gladly answer any questions in this
matter.

2. Use of resources
The specific consumption of fresh water, raw materials and
energy provides a measure of efficiency of our utilisation of
resources.
2.1 Fresh water
Fresh water usage has increased due to a rise in production
volume, an increase of CAD/Office paper qualities, and the
introduction of several new products.
2.2 Raw materials
Specific raw material usage refers to the quantity of raw ma-
terials (without water component) needed to produce one
kilogram of sold paper.
Losses are concentrated in wastewater, where solids floc-
culated in the pre-treatment plant are filtered out as paper
sludge, and soluble contents, primarily starch, are broken
down in the municipal biological treatment plant.
In the year under review we have notified a 0.7% increase of
raw material input. This improvement of raw material exploi-
tation is a result of intelligent measures we have taken.
Our commitment to reach 1.03% has not been achieved.

2. Ressourceneinsatz
cennutzung.
2.1 Frischwasser
Aufgrund der erhöhten Produktionsmenge, des höheren
Produktionsanteils an CAD/Office-Qualitäten und der Ein-
führung verschiedener neuer Produkte ist der Frischwas-
sereinsatz angestiegen.
2.2 Rohstoffe
Der spezifische Rohstoffeinsatz ist die rechnerisch (ohne
Wasseranteil) zur Herstellung von einem Kilogramm ver-
kauftem Papier eingesetzte Menge Rohstoffe.

2.3 Energy
Energy supply at Ziegler Paper Mill is based on a combined
heat and power plant with a gas turbine.
Electricity is generated thermally, using co-generation with
our gas turbine. Any extra power required is purchased
from the public grid. The waste heat from the gas turbine is
used together with additional heat from a natural gas fur-
nace in order to produce steam for the paper machine.
As gas consumption covers both the heating needs of the
paper machine, as well as the power requirements for the
thermal generation of electricity, the total energy needed is
made up of the sum of purchased gas and purchased elec-
tricity.
Increased production capacity, together with improved pro-
cess control, has led to a reduction of consumption quanti-
ties. This is particularly evident in the specific gas and steam
consumption. The total specific energy consumption was
reduced by 0.9%.
All in all, there is still room for improvement as far as energy
consumption is concerned. This can be done by improving
process controls that minimise the loss of energy into the
environment. This situation has been given appropriate
consideration in our long-term investment planning, which
also takes into account the new CO2 legislation that came
into effect on 1.1.2013.
2.3 Energie
Netz zugekauft.
Entsprechen-
de Überlegungen, auch unter Berücksichtigung des ab
1.1.2013 geltenden neuen CO2-Gesetzes, sind in die langfri-
stige Investitionsplanung eingeflossen.

3. Waste emissions
3.1 Waste water
The fresh water obtained from the company’s own ground-
water supply system is used over and over again thanks to
in-house recycling.
Water is not actually “consumed” during the manufacture of
paper. Instead, the fresh water used as process water in the
paper-making process re-enters the environment again in
the form of purified wastewater, steam from the dryer sec-
tion and as moisture in the paper produced. In line with the
increase of fresh water usage, there was therefore also an
increase of specific wastewater. The aspired target of 4 l/kg
has been slightly exceeded. The steady increase of solids
content in the wastewater is deplorable. Compared to the
previous year, this means an increase of 28.4 %. The amount
of filtered sludge corresponds to that of the previous year.
The project initiated in 2013 to improve pre-wastewater
treatment delivered its first positive results. Two fundamen-
tal factors could be identified by process analysis: solid mat-
ter on the one hand, and the reduction of the share of or-
ganic matter in the wastewater on the other hand.
On 01.01.2010, Ziegler Paper Mill became subject to the
wastewater legislation of the community of Grellingen with
respect to the wastewater it discharges. Since this time,
TOC content (TOC = total organic carbon) has been the
wastewater component on which basis we are liable to pay
costs for subsequent biological purification. For this reason,
the table below also includes TOC contents from 2010
onwards. Unlike solids content, whose composition can be
either organic or inorganic, TOC covers all organic com-
pounds (both solid and dissolved).
The cause of the high solids content in the wastewater could
be identified. In this year’s report, an enormous increase in
the CAD/Office product line (by 85%) can be observed. If the
preliminary sedimentation unit is charged with the highly
ionically charged paper coating formulations, then function-
ality is lost. We have registered a first success through a
process-technological adaptation. The coating color resi-

3. Emissionen
3.1 Abwasser
Das der eigenen Grundwasserfassung entnommene
Frischwasser wird durch firmeninterne Kreislaufschliessun-
gen mehrfach genutzt.
zeichnen. Wenn die Vorklärungsanlage mit den stark io-
nisch geladenen Papierbeschichtungsformulierungen be-

dues were collected centrally in a first test and continuously
fed to the plant, instead of being supplied imediately, which
can lead to an overload. The primary objective of TOC re-
duction was achieved by adjusting the flocculation unit to
the new situation. The specific TOC load was reduced by
5.6%. Further measures for 2014 are planned.
During 2013, the Office of Environmental Protection and En-
ergy once again took random samples to check the com-
position of our wastewater. In all cases the agency found
that our waste treatment plant and the composition of the
waste-water samples conformed to requirements.
3.2 Exhaust air
Significant quantities of exhaust air are produced by
• Ventilation and air-extraction of the paper machine and
manufacturing halls:
Although the presence of organic pollutants resulting
from pulp and other raw materials can be detected, they
are irrelevant as an emission. The fact that exhaust air
can be seen escaping into the atmosphere is due to the
presence of condensed water vapour in the exhaust air.
• Generation of electricity and heat in the central power
plant through combustion of natural gas:
When talking about air pollution from our central power
plant, a distinction must be made between
– the emission of the air pollutants carbon monoxide (CO),
sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and soot, all
of which tend to have a regional impact and
– the release of greenhouse gas (CO2), which tends to
have a global impact.
3.2.1 Air pollutants CO, SO2, NOx, soot
Unlike the paper machine, the central power plant is very
relevant as a source of emissions. For this reason, it is in-
spected by an official monitoring authority (Basel Air Pollu-
tion Control Office).
On 17.04.2012, air pollution in the central power plant was
measured by an authorised company (measurements take
place every two years) on behalf of the Basel Air Pollution
Control Office. The examination showed that the plant con-
formed safely with all limits.
3.2.2 Release of fossil CO2
Heat and electricity are generated at Ziegler Paper Mill by
burning natural gas in a combined heat and power plant
with a gas turbine for generating electricity and a waste
heat boiler for producing steam. Emphasis is placed on the
best possible energy efficiency. This produces CO2.
The CO2 legislation that has been in force since 01.01.2013 is
conceived differently, and allocates CO2 quotas based on
European industrial benchmarks to companies that are
Umweltbelastung I Environmental impact ecofootprint
Dabei entsteht
auch das Klimagas CO2.

obliged to participate in emissions trading. In accordance
with these benchmarks for the production of fine papers,
the factory has been allocated a CO2 quota of 21 540 tons: In
the reporting year, CO2 emissions amounted to 28 745 tons.
The shortfall was made up by additional purchases of CO2
certificates.
3.3 Solid waste
Our waste management programme is governed by the
motto: “Prevent – recycle – re-use!”
• The major waste product in paper production and finish-
ing is the manufacturer’s own paper scrap. Nearly all our
scrap is recycled internally and forms a component in all
our fibre recipes.
• The mechanical treatment plant also produces waste in
the form of paper sludge. This sludge consists primarily
of fibres and fillers.
Since 2007, the paper sludge we produce has been
fermented to create valuable, environmentally neutral
biogas in a plant located near the mill.
The year under review, just as in the previous year, saw
the production of 14.8 kg of paper sludge for every ton of
paper manufactured (2011: 13.0 kg; 2010: 10.9 kg).
• Our paper products can be completely recycled by our
customers after use. They make an essential contribu-
tion to the fresh fibre needed to maintain the waste pa-
per fibre cycle. This aspect is often completely ignored
when ecological comparisons are made between paper
products based on virgin pulp, and those using recycled
paper.
3.4 Noise
In the year covered by this report, no complaints were re-
ceived from local residents. Noise emission limits along the
perimeter of the mill site were complied with in full.
Benchmarks beruhen. Auf Basis dieses Benchmarks zur
Herstellung von Feinpapieren wurde der Fabrik ein CO2-
Kontingent, errechnet aus den Produktionsmengen, von
21 540 to zugeteilt. Im Berichtsjahr lag der CO2-Ausstoss bei
28 745 to. Die Differenz wurde über Zukäufe von CO2-Zertifi-
katen ausgeglichen.
schlamm an.
14,8 kg/to Papier (2011: 13.0 kg/to; 2010: 10.9 kg/to).

4. Accidents
There were no accidents or other incidents that might have
resulted in contamination of the soil or water (River Birs,
groundwater) in the year under review.
5. Pollution and work safety
In compliance with our legal obligations, but also out of re-
spect for our employees and their health, we ensure the
best possible standards of work safety and protection
against pollution within the mill.
5.1 Protection against pollution
Above all, it is noise pollution that can impact operating per-
sonnel. We effectively combat this by distributing individual-
ly-customised ear protectors to staff and by obliging them
to wear these safeguards.
5.2 Work safety
The safety commission (SIKO), under the chairmanship of
the safety manager (SIBE), is responsible for matters of
work safety. Each year, the safety commission draws up a
safety programme and monitors its implementation in close
collaboration with the Swiss Accident Insurance Fund
(SUVA), the government body responsible for work safety.
SUVA performed an audit of our safety measures during the
year under review.
The occurrence of accidents again moved in the right direc-
tion, though we are less satisfied with the resultant time loss
than with the number of accidents.
Umweltbelastung I Environmental impact ecofootprint
4. Havarien
5.2 Arbeitssicherheit
Die Belange der Arbeitssicherheit nimmt die Sicherheits-
kommission (SIKO) unter dem Vorsitz des Sicherheitsbeauf-
tragten (SIBE) wahr. Die Sicherheitskommission verab-
schiedet für jedes Jahr ein Sicherheitsprogramm und
überwacht dessen Umsetzung in enger Zusammenarbeit
zahlen.
