Albany Area Chamber to Award High School

Scholarships! If you are the parent or guardian of a child graduating this year from Santiam Christian, South Albany, West Albany or Albany Options, then you will want to take this opportunity to have them apply for one of four $1500 scholarships for high school seniors. Scholarship applications are available at these high schools and at the Chamber offi ce.

LAST CHANCE!LAST CHANCE!

Welcome to the March chamber newsletter. Weather dominated the topic of conversation in February! February snowfall records have stood the test of time since 1937 when 15 inches was recorded on the valley fl oor according to weather sources, but our recent storms challenged those records. The business impact of “snowmageddon” is still

being recognized but will certainly have a fi nancial impact to our local businesses. I can tell you fi rsthand that paying for someone to clear your parking lot was a very popular start-up business and I am extremely thankful for their services! At the Democrat-Herald, we were able to assemble a “skeleton crew” to prepare and publish the latest news and information. Our carrier force performed admirably delivering our product in almost unmanageable conditions. I also received an email from a community member who related how sharing community and neighborhood resources helped many through some very diffi cult situations this past month. And speaking of surviving the test of time, by the time this newsletter reaches you, you will have read the fi rst edition of the Democrat-Herald’s 2014 Focus section. (The section appeared in the Feb. 28 newspaper.) The fi rst part focused on mid-valley businesses that have endured for years, by emphasizing community, core values, traditions – and also understood when and how to change. These are all key attributes of any successful business strategy – and, for that matter, any successful community. The newsrooms are working on the second part of the Focus edition, to publish on March 28. This section will spotlight some of the innovations that were created in the mid-valley – and also will take an exciting look at some of the new innovations and entrepreneurial efforts that will shape the mid-valley for years to come. In the meantime, mark your calendars for a pair of exciting March events on your chamber calendar: Join us March 5 for Women in Business, featuring guest speaker Christine Thompson on “The Power of Communication.” The Albany Area Chamber presents its 69th Annual Distinguished Service Awards on Saturday, March 8th at the Boys and Girls Club of Albany. Please contact the chamber to reserve your table today! Our membership forum features state Rep. Dennis Richardson, a Republican candidate for governor, on March 19. We hope to see everyone there. Personal Background: I left Pennsylvania and came to this area in 1963. I’ve been happily married to my wonderful wife Linda for 49 years. We have three children, nine grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. I became involved in the electrical industry in 1965 and started Rite Way Electric 35 years ago. I’m presently active on several non-profit boards, including YMCA, Albany Helping Hands and Albany First Assembly.

Business Marketing Niche: At Rite Way Electric, we specialize in great service with professionalism and integrity. We serve residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural customers, from trouble shooting and repairing to complete projects like the new YMCA.

Biggest Issue Facing Albany: For some reason the city doesn’t seem to understand the Chamber’s motto of “Without business, there is no community.” The economy is driven by business. They need to find ways to help business, rather than be so quick to say no. They need to be asking “how can we help you make your project work?” The city needs to create a culture of “How can we help you?”

Chamber Involvement: Rite Way Electric has been a member of the Chamber for 27 years. I graduated from Leadership Albany, served on the board, served as chairman; attend Greeters, Forum lunches and Business After Hours. I

am presently on the Governmental Affairs Committee and Education Committee chair. In 2013 I was honored with the Distinguished Service Award.

KeyBank has finished a two-year makeover of its Albany branch at 128 Third Ave. SW. The work was designed to modernize and apply Key brand standards to the 1957 vintage building. Exterior work began in September just as Key consolidated its East Albany branch operations to this location.

Interior work included a new teller line, carpet, paint, lighting, customer seating and video wall. Outside, cedar siding was replaced with a neutral stucco fi nish complemented by composite wood screen walls on three sides and redesigned entrances. Pulling the new look together is new entry signage and a decorative red metal “eyebrow” panel that wraps around the building. Installation of new landscaping is expected this spring.
