The Outpost of the Outer Ones

YS1 – The Outpost of the Outer Ones is the first in aseries (hopefully) of fantasy modules based on theworks of H.P. Lovecraft, in this case inspired by TheWhisperer in Darkness and its alien creatures, the

Mi-o. !t is meant for a party of si"th to tenth levelcharacters, dependin# on which flavor of $%& isused.

'espite the source, as written, its not a horrormodule, more science-fiction. nd not aninvesti#ation or a mystery, its pretty much adun#eon crawl.

Note: *his module is li#ht on traditional treasure, with the e"ception of mithral bars and coins. !t doesfeature a number of technolo#ical items andcharacter enhancin# items that serve as +treasure.hile these may be out of place, in #eneral, they

dont do anythin# ma#ical items cannot. !f they #etout of hand in your #ame, well, thin#s break andtheir power source mi#ht run down.

Rules Note: hile directly usable with most $%&systems, this module is specifically aimed at st

/dition of the dvanced &ules. lso, a +0urrower isa name for a lar#e brown burrowin# humanoid withmandibles, as the official variant is product identity.!t has four arms, not two, and lacks the confusionability.

!t should also be fairly easy to scale down. !nvarious $%& #ames, ! have seen Mi-o with hit dice

from anywhere to 1 to 2. %ome +monsters areactually 3ust characters, its easy to reduce their

level, and the bionically enhanced creatures can bereverted to normal.

Background:

*he Mi-o are an alien race who occasionallyestablish outposts on planets throu#hout themultiverse to obtain certain types of precious metalsthat are hard to find in space itself. *hey haveestablished 3ust such a base near a town the players 3ust happen to be in. *he Mi-o have tentatively

e"plored the local re#ion, capturin# some monstersand makin# contact with a handful of isolatedindividuals.

!n their normal form Mi-o look somethin# like a 4lon# crayfish with win#s. *hey sometimes pose asother creatures, usin# specially desi#ned bodies thatthey either wear as suits (essentially 3ust acostume), or implant their own brains in (and thus ahuman in everythin# but brain).

*heir motivations are unclear. *hey seem to becontent to simply mine metal and apparently preferscarin# away intruders rather than killin# them, occasionally abductin# an e"cessively nosy

interloper, removin# his brain and keepin# it alive ina brain cylinder.

*here are many Mi-o devices in the base. *he Mi-o have improved somewhat in terms of technolo#ysince The Whisperer in Darkness, with the braincylinders havin# built in speakers that do not soundat all mechanical in nature, 3ust a little odd, andcompletely realistic bodies, not wa"en ones. *he P5scan learn to operate them either by successful use ofa Mi-o learnin# machine, or interro#atin# the brainof a Mi-o.

Rumors

raveyards have been du# up and the bodiesremoved. 0ut only recent burials.

Local farmers have been reportin# their haystackshave been #ettin# up and walkin# away at ni#ht.

ran#er has mentioned hearin# stran#e bu66in#sounds comin# from the woods at ni#ht.

$ld wen (a local witch) has #one missin# from hercabin in the woods.

#roup of creepy lookin# men have been askin#about the stran#e occurrences in the woods, andmutterin# somethin# about a yellow si#n. Hope theydont mean the olden 'ryad, thats my favoritetavern.

stran#e man by the name of 7orlon has been

showin# up at churches in town, preachin# aboutfriendly brothers from sky. *he local clerics havebeen tryin# to chase him off, but he vanishesmysteriously. He looks almost as unearthly beautifulas an elf, with lon# blond hair, but doesnt havepointed ears. He is sometimes accompanied by asimilarly beautiful woman by the name of hura.

$ne of the curious thin#s about The Whisperer inDarkness is that the Mi-o arent particularly evil.*hey very could easily have killed keley at any timein the story, or for that matter, had @oyes killilmarth the moment he #ot in the car, rather than#oin# throu#h the whole charade of tryin# toconvince ilmarth to 3oin them. *hey did eventuallycapture keley and try to dru# ilmarth, so they can

be friendly to mankind, to the point of providin# ama#ical charm a#ainst petrification so an evil reat$ld $ne who demanded sacrifices could be killed.

$n the other hand, some have linked her to the&agna &ater  in The 'ats in the Walls( so she mi#htbe okay with cannibalism.

Ou##oth is merely an outpost, apparently their truehome is someplace in Grsa Ma3or. possible specificreference to it is a world of seven suns, which couldbe the Mi6ar-lcor system. *hat has si" stars and its

not impossible for there to be another, undetected, dim star.

!f you wish to make it more of a horror adventure, you can simply make the Mi-o more evil and addmore #ore. Bor instance, in the sur#ery room thereis a vivisected #nome, still alive, but with his insidesopen and all strewn out. %ome of the technolo#ical items mi#ht seem toomuch, especially the bionics. Maybe so, but some ofit was meant to address differences in capabilities(ability scores for instance) in my players
