Newsletter 9 2012—2013 for the environment Young Reporters A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO VOICE YOUR CONCERNS AND GET HEARD…MAKE USE OF IT! Winners 2012—2013 YRE 2012-2013 winners Dear all, Here is the news that everyone was waiting for:- the winners for both the YRE and Wrigley Litterless campaign 2013. There were over 130 entries in all….and choosing the best ones was no easy feat. The judges — coming from different areas and experts from all related spheres — were given the anonymous entries and then submitted their marks according to the normal YRE criteria. The level reached this year was quite high, and if we had a choice we would have sent everything abroad. Unfortunately it is a competition and there had to be a winner, but this does not mean that non winners were not good. Heartfelt congratulations for all the commitment shown from schools towards the environment. It is very encouraging to see our students reporting so strongly about environmental concerns and proposing their solutions. A big well done to all - especially to the teachers who have given a lot of their free time in these projects. Both the YRE and Wrigley Litterless Campaign winners have now been sent abroad to compete with over 22 countries. International winners will be announced by the end of May 2013. Cross fingers and good luck to all — but, whatever the results, all the work done in Malta is of a very good level. Well done! RIP - Fr Eric Overend

On behalf of Nature Trust Malta, we wish to express our condolences to the Zejtun Eco Centre who have

lost their founder — Fr Eric Overend — this

week. Fr Eric was a great believer in the YRE

programme. Last year they submitted their

video and won internationally. This year their

video will also be sent abroad. We wish to

thank Fr Eric for having believed in us. RIP

One of the main areas of judgement is dissemination—which is very important for every young reporter.

Unfortunately not all entries manage to get to the press. This year we had some very positive feedback from

those who sent their projects to local newspapers. St Benedict College GSS Tarxien sent a letter to The

Sunday Times about the litter situation outside their school. The following week the workers were at the

school cleaning up...which shows that the voices of Young Reporters are heard. I encourage all students to

publish and disseminate their work—it will always make a difference!
