How can we solve the problems caused by tourism?

Match the heads with the tails.

Off peak tourism Tourism in the future achieves a balance between the needs of tourists and the needs of the environment and the local people.

Agrotourism This was a strategy that was introduced into Mallorca to solve the problems caused by tourism. It’s underlying aim was sustainable development.

Sustainable tourism This involves ensuring that there is an even spread of tourists throughout the year.

Local Agenda 21 This is when tourists stay on a working farm. They get the chance to enjoy Spanish culture and the farmers gain an income from tourism.

What is sustainable tourism?Sustainable tourism aims to balance the need for local businesses to make a profit whilst making sure it doesn’t cause environmental degradation (ruin beyond repair)

If sustainable tourism is achieved, this could ensure the long-term survival of the resort. However, Eco-Tourism suggests this can only be achieved by making the conservation of the environment the main priority.

Task: • In pairs, you will need to design a resort that will

meet the principles of Eco-Tourism. You will need to include:a) 8 accommodation huts; b) Bar & restaurant; c) Bantaba (outdoor, shaded meeting place); d) Public toilet bloc; e) A large communal hut; f) Resort Reception; g) Communal garden

• You must also annotate the design of your Resort to highlight how it meets the principles of Ecotourism
