Thank you so much for deciding to involve the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in your youth group work. We hope that you will enjoy being involved with the charity that saves lives at sea.

Education Learning to be safe at sea

This Youth activity pack contains lots of ideas to help you organise fun evenings while showing young people how to play an active role in their community just as you do as leaders.

In this booklet you will find ideas sorted into four different sections:

StAY SAfE

HElPIng OtHErS

WOrkIng tOgEtHEr

rEAdY fOr ActIOn

Each section has a front sheet of bullet point ideas and then three activity sheets with more detailed ideas and any necessary resources. The detailed activity sheets are tasks that are active, creative or group work orientated.

The booklet is designed to be very versatile and used in any way you choose. The suggested ideas can be related to the work of the charity and in particular our volunteer crews.

If you would like to work towards our RNLI Young Supporter badge then we ask that you complete at least one activity from each of the different sections. We are particularly keen that all young people learn to stay safe on or near water so we hope you will pay particular attention to this section.

On the back page is a form that you can photocopy to order your badges.

Our website rnli.org.uk/shorething has lots of useful information that will help you to plan your sessions.

Have fun completing your chosen activities and being involved with our lifesaving charity.

The RNLI will be there to help if young people do get in trouble – but we would rather they weren’t in trouble in the first place. This section aims to teach your group how they can keep themselves safe, using the same skills that lifeboat crew and lifeguards do to assess risk and save others. Many incidents in water are preventable - thank you for your help in stopping them!

Ideas: Rescue challenge

Beach safety adverts see enclosed activity sheets

Design an outfit

Prepare a basic first aid kit – discuss what to include, checking thinks are in date etc.

Design safety posters or banners

Risk assessment – work with the group to discuss the risks they may face on a particular visit or in an area (e.g. a local beach or inland waterway) and how they can avoid them

Mix ‘n’ match – label half the group with a hazard (e.g. sun, getting lost) and the other half with solutions (e.g. sun cream, tell an adult where you’re going) and ask them to find their partner

Big sick, little sick – discuss an emergency first aid scenario and decide who the group would tend to first using this simple classification system used by RNLI crews

Spot the dangers – use our Spot the Dangers image to identify risks at the beach and discuss how to stay safe

999 role play – use role play to explore making a call in an emergency situation and highlight the key information they would need to know

Design a beach sign for your local beach – discuss the dangers in the area and design an appropriate sign. An example sign can be downloaded from the ‘Other downloads’ section of Shorething

Design and test a waterproof – choose appropriate materials to make a waterproof shelter or outfit and test with buckets of water!

Work towards a first aid certificate

Peer education – take your group to a younger counterpart and teach them how to stay safe

Learn how to sail, canoe or a similar water sport

Design a leaflet on how to prepare for a day out at the beach and what to take with you or a beach safety guide with rules to follow

Visit a local Lifeboat station, lifeguard unit or coastguard unit

Beach flags – design and make replica beach flags

Safety codes – using the SAFE message, ask each person to design their own code giving an example to illustrate each point.

What you will need:

apparatus for throwing games (e.g. bean bags, small balls etc)

targets (could be cones, goals or you could make your own).

What to do:

Ask the group if they can think of things that can be used to help people if they are in trouble in water. What kinds of Public Rescue Equipment (PRE) have they seen by water? Discuss how items like liferings and lifelines can be used to help people. Ensure that the group understands these should only be used in an emergency and the life-threatening effects of vandalism.

For the group to practise their throwing skills in case of an emergency, set up a throwing challenge in teams. Each team must rescue as many people as they can in the time allowed by accurately throwing an item at a target. When the time is up the team who has rescued the most people wins.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Ask the group to look out for any rescue equipment in your area or when they are near water in the future and talk about these at a later date.

Encourage the group to think about other items they could use to help someone if the rescue equipment was missing (eg empty plastic bottles, a rope etc) – if possible test these out to see which has the most buoyancy.

What you will need:

sea safety materials (additional copies can be ordered from your local Education Manager)

paper and pens

additional craft materials for making posters if required.

What to do:

Discuss how people can stay safe when they are at the beach. Use RNLI Beach safety guides to help pick out important safety messages. Discuss which they think would be the most important and how they could persuade people to follow them.

Divide into groups and ask each group to devise a Summer advert, which will communicate key beach safety rules. They can choose their own format (eg radio, television, poster).

Ask each group to present their advert and discuss together how successful each advert was in getting the safety message across.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Organise a quiz in a subsequent session to see how many of the safety rules your group can remember.

If possible, display any physical adverts in a public place so that the beach safety messages can be passed on in your community.

What you will need:

a range of craft materials including plastics, cotton wool and various materials

plain paper

scissors and glue.

What to do:

Explain to the group that lifeboat crew and lifeguards need specially designed clothing to ensure that they are kept safe, dry and warm while they are rescuing other people and that the materials chosen to make these have to be carefully thought about.

Divide into groups and ask each group to make a model outfit for a different scenario. One group can make an outfit for someone for a hot day on the beach, another for a hike on a rainy day, someone going out on a boat and so on.

Each group draws the outline of a person, and then chooses appropriate materials to make them an outfit.

When all the groups have finished, ask them to present their outfit and to explain why they have chosen each material to use.

Possible follow-up ideas:

For older groups, you draw round a person on wallpaper and make a life-size outfit, or create real clothes.

If available, include reflective materials and discuss when these would be important to include.

Ideas: Call to action

A helping hand see enclosed activity sheets

Making medals

Community webs – create a spider diagram of all the people in your community, highlighting those who help other people

Community action – plan projects that your group can carry out in the community to help other people

Improving the local environment – plan some activities that you can do that will improve the environment of your community eg planting bulbs

Make a lifeboats collecting box – a template is enclosed

SOS – join our biggest fundraising day on the last Friday in January, visit rnli.org.uk/sos to find out more. One simple way to join in is to order some of our jam jar labels for each member of your group to take home and fill in the run up to RNLI SOS day

Organise a fundraising event with your group, for example filling sweet tubes with coins, offering a car washing service, pack bags at your local supermarket or make a large lifeboat out of coins on the floor of your meeting place

Interview people in the community who volunteer to find out what motivates them and how they became part of their organisation

Organise a debate – discuss topics such as How to withstand peer pressure, Making good decisions or What is bravery/stupidity?

Prepare a consequence activity – if you do … then what happens?

Hold an auction of ‘help’ promises

Hold an at home bob a job week – but they help without pay then build a wall diary of helping

Create a ‘helping others’ award and present it to someone in the community

Meet a crew member and a lifeguard on rnli.org.uk/shorething

Give time to a specific project – look at the Vinspire project on vinspire.com

Start a Duke of Edinburgh or President’s award and complete the service section for the RNLI, look at intaward.org

What you will need:

outlines of red and white liferings

card

scissors

glue

pens

hole punch

wool/string

What to do:

Discuss what sort of things they do to help people, whether it is at home, school etc.

Put their name at the centre of a lifering (could do more than one)

Colour alternate sections of the ring in red

In each white section write what they have done to help over the past week

Paste on card, cut out, punch a hole in the top, attach a piece of wool/string and tie onto a wool/string washing line in the meeting place.

Possible follow-up ideas:

By helping they have thrown out a lifeline to someone. As a group see if there is anything that your meeting place needs doing to make it nicer.

Extend this into helping as a group in the community eg plant some bulbs, see if a local group/old peoples home needs some help. (Putting a lifering around the community.)

What you will need:

image of rescue

pens and paper (optional)

What to do:

Look at the poster in groups.– Who is in trouble and what may have happened to him? – What services are working together to help the boy? – What skills and qualities do they need in order to work together well?

Act out the rescue shown on the poster or draw a cartoon version. You could add speech/thought/action bubbles to the picture. Alternatively you could write a poem, story or radio play about the rescue depicted.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Helping others is what charities and volunteering is all about - doing something useful without expecting a reward. The group could be challenged to find out about other charities and how they help people.

Group could think of ways to give others a helping hand or cut out pictures and stories from the newspaper that relate to helping others.

Group could work out what they could do if they saw the following:– someone struggling with heavy shopping– a child sitting alone on a bench in the park– someone in the water shouting for help.

How could they help without putting themselves at risk? How could a group of people working together help the person even more?

Encourage your group to look on the RNLI website and find out about a recent rescue at your nearest lifeboat station or lifeguard unit.

What you will need:

craft materials – eg ribbon, tin foil, unwanted/free cds, wooden bases (for trophies), card/paper for certificates

What to do:

Discuss with your group who they can think of in their community who helps other people (eg crossing guards, doctors, carers, meals on wheels etc). Draw up a list together of these people, identifying which of them are volunteers.

Ask each member of the group to choose one person from the list who they would like to make a medal (or trophy or certificate depending on the resources available) for to thank them for their hard work in the community.

Each person designs their award and decides on any wording they will include and what they will say when they present it.

Using the available craft materials each person makes their award and then takes it home to present to the chosen person.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Hold a presentation evening where you can invite all of the awardees along to receive their medals and encourage each member of the group to say a few words explaining why they have chosen to give them an award.

Invite a speaker in to talk to your group about the work they do in the community – eg a special constable, retained firemen, crossing guards, lifeboat crew, lifeguards, school helpers or a leader of another youth group.

What you will need:

masking tape or rope

30cm2 cardboard squares (or standard sheets of A4 paper)

What to do:

Create an imaginary channel with ropes or masking tape

Make it wide enough to be a challenge

Distribute squares to half the group

The aim is to get the whole group safely across the channel

Rules of the game:

They cannot touch the water and must use ‘rafts’ (squares)

If they touch the water, participants will lose a leg to sharks and must complete the crossing on one foot

Squares must be in contact with a human at all times or it will be swept away (removed)

Cardboard squares can only move forward

No one can complete the crossing until everyone has left the starting bank.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Find out what happens on a shout. How do people work together to save lives at sea?

Think of 3 important ways to work together successfully. Decide on a teamwork challenge in the community that would use all these ideas.

Write some rules for river safety.

Use junk modeling to create seascapes lifeboat stations etc.

What you will need:

props relating to the beach if available eg inflatable, sun cream, sunhat, rope, bucket and spade etc

What to do:

Ask a small group of children (3-4) to act out a scenario using the theme A day on the beach you could use the cue cards for ideas or invite the children to come up with their own.

Ask another two children to be lifeguards.

Once the scene has developed, ask the children to freeze.

The lifeguards can now advise how to make their chosen activity safer. A few hints are given on the cards.

The children acting out the scene use this advice to show how to enjoy the beach safely. They could also show two different endings for their role-play. One where they were acting safely and another where they were acting dangerously.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Produce cartoons with differing ending depending on whether safety advice has been listened to.

Show your drama piece to a younger group of children. You could use toys and dolls to act it out for a younger group.

Use action and consequence drama to explore other dangers or situations eg inland waterways.

Active problem solving ideas – collect together a box of props and ask the question what would you take to sea or which things are fit for purpose?

Set up a mock interview situation and get the person being interviewed to say how they prepare for a given task, if your group meets near a lifeboat station interview a crew member.

How do they prepare for things in their lives – a weekend camping, a forthcoming exam etc.

Investigate local opportunities to become a lifeguard.

Practise throwing a lifeline accurately – could be improvised with getting a ball accurately into a bucket.

Do some compass related activities – make a paper plate compass, play compass-related games such as treasure hunt or have a go at orienteering

Play boat-related games eg port or starboard

Get fit by using a DVD, complete some simple circuit training, visit a local gym or invite a fitness instructor to run an evening for you.

What to do:

Discuss being prepared for a task in areas such as concentration, dexterity, strength, stamina, speed and alertness.

There are 3 tasks to perform and each person can be timed to see how long it takes to do each task.1. Dress in kit (trousers, jacket, hat, wellies and gloves) and record the time to do this. 2. Practise tying a bowline then complete under timed conditions. 3. Bounce a ball 10x and time how long it takes – the exercise must be restarted if they lose control but

keep the stop watch running.

The results could then be recorded in a table just as crew members record their training at the lifeboat station.

item to represent the boat – a gym mat, old blanket, piece of plastic sheet, etc.

props that have to be transported on the boat without going in the water – balls, sheets of newspaper, skipping ropes, etc. (Your choice of items will make the challenge either easier or harder.)

provided you have enough equipment, the teams can complete the challenge together like a race. If not, then use one set of equipment and time each team in turn.

What to do:

Teams have to work together to get their boat (eg mat) and all its equipment from ‘the lifeboat station’ at one end of the hall, playground, field etc to the other to rescue someone/thing (person, teddy bear etc).

Team members must not put their feet on the ground. If they do, you can either add on penalty points (eg 10 seconds) or make the team start again. You can also add penalty points for any item on the boat that roles away and doesn’t make it safely to the destination.

As long as their feet don’t touch the ground, teams can use items to stand on as they move the boat and should either hold onto the items from the boat or risk moving it with the items still onboard.

Once they have arrived at the end then their challenge is complete. The time taken plus any penalty points will give them a total time.

Congratulate and reward the fastest team!

If time allows they can transport the boat and casualty back to ‘the lifeboat station’ and their challenge is complete.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Challenge another local group to the task.

Try other fitness challenges.

Create a lifeboat rescue board game.

Have a go at the crew training challenge on the RNLI website at rnlicrewgame.org.

information on foods – food groups, energy content, healthy eating etc.

What to do:

Discuss food groups, what is healthy; which foods supply us with lots of energy etc.

Explain that crew members are often out at sea for long periods and the work is demanding so they must have a healthy diet and have lots of energy. Relate this to times when the group might need to have lots of energy.

Use the magazines etc. to cut out healthy foods with high energy levels to make a suitable meal for a crew member and stick on the paper plate.

Possible follow-up ideas:

Get a visitor to talk to the group about healthy eating, exercise etc.

Collect food wrappers and make a collage of suitable foods to give you energy and keep you healthy or to show suitable food versus unsuitable food.

Ready, steady, cook – make a healthy/high-energy plate of food for a crew member/lifeguard.

Food to go – pack up a healthy/high-energy lunch box for a crew member/lifeguard.
