On October 4, 2011, Apple products owners and addicts w e n t t o b e d , c o m p l e t e l y engrossed in their apps, only to wake up the next day and learn that the pioneer of these products was no more. The news came as an unpleasant shock to everybody who knew who Steve Jobs was. The people, who knew about his achievements, knew what a loss it was to technology. Computer engineers had lost an icon, technology had lost a pioneer and the world had lost a great human being. Steve Jobs' loss has more repercussions than can be imagined at once and will definitely be felt for years to come.

Born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California, Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs had an aura of charm around him. Everyone knew him as the charismatic founder of Apple who d e m o n s t r a t e d n e w A p p l e products in a simple black turtle neck T-shirt and blue jeans. His appearance was simple, but his mind was just as great. Steve Jobs always had the future in mind, which is clearly visible in each Apple product. He credited this attitude of his to a quote by the ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. In his own words, “There's an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love. 'I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.' And we've always tried to do that at Apple. Since the very very beginning. And we always will.” He was, as many say, a tough boss too. But at the same time, he was like a benevolent father for his e m p l o y e e s . H i s h a n d s - o n approach to work and setting high standards made sure that Apple stayed ahead of the pack.

A notable incident in Apple's history was when Jobs

had a public war of words with Dell Computer CEO Michael Dell,

starting when Jobs first criticized Dell for making "un-innovative beige boxes". In 1997, when Michael Dell was asked what he would do if he owned then-troubled Apple Computer, he said "I'd shut it down and give the

money back to the shareholders."In 2006, Jobs sent an email to all employees when Apple's market capitalization rose above Dell's. The email read: “Team, it turned out that Michael Dell wasn't perfect at predicting the future. Based on today's stock market close, Apple is worth more than Dell. Stocks go up and down, and t h i n g s m a y b e d i f f e r e n t tomorrow, but I thought it was worth a moment of reflection today. Steve.”

Steve Jobs was also famous for merging technology with great looks and design, which is why Apple products, along with being s u p e r i o r p e r f o r m e r s , a r e excellent to look at and have an amazingly intuitive interface. Along with being the pioneer of touch based technology, Jobs is listed as either primary inventor or co-inventor in 342 United S t a t e s p a t e n t s o r p a t e n t applications related to a range of technologies.

T h i s i s s u e o f Yo u r s Youthfully is dedicated to the life and times of Steve Jobs, without whom the world will never be the same. People cannot thank him enough for whatever he has given to this world. He was a man who dreamt of changing the world and realized his dream. Steve Jobs’ l o s s w i l l h ave a f f e c t t h e technology of generations to come. And like many put it, it is hard, if not impossible, for another Steve Jobs to come in a hundred years.

Need For Speed, License To Thrill

It has been believed for a long time that India is a country where age old beliefs and never ending superstitions prevails and that Indians do not live their life with adventure and some amount of risk involved in it. But since change is the only constant, F1 is in India for the very first time and hopefully in this cricket fanatic nation the game would get that sort of support from Indians that it expects.

India is new destination for formula one so we have a reason to cheer. F1 is an established game in Europe and United States, but in India it is still lesser known but with half a population under 25 this game definitely has a future here. India's Urban population is taking interest in this sport and with 100 million viewers in the pocket India has an immense potential and that is why a number of foreign companies are attracted towards this country, for example multinational companies like Bridgestone and Vodafone who sponsor formula one teams and h ave b ro u gh t Fe r ra r i a n d McLaren cars to the country to promote their brands. What is in it for India? Firstly, India after such an event would get an international recognition. Secondly our country could learn from the technology related

to engine design and production. And with that India can bring a big revenue from foreign companies. Some may say that investment in the F1 puts burden on economic condition of country. It is undeniable that it is an expensive game but revenue generated by it is also huge. And with ready tracks the circuit can also target other events like motor cycle grand prix (now called Moto GP) and various other forms of motor sports which are held every year across the globe, but for this circuit should be designed in such way that it can be suitable for any kind of motor sport. Revenue can b e g e n e r a t e d t h r o u g h broadcasting and advertisement as F1 is a massive television event watched by 600 million people around the world and still India is an untapped market.Around 60 thousand spectators are expected to come from different parts of the country to cheer their favourite teams, so it is a golden opportunity for tourism and hospitality sector to make some money as many of the F1 lovers would be passionate about the game and would spend a hefty s u m o f m o n e y o n f o o d , a c c o m m o d a t i o n a n d entertainment. As Indian economy is one of the fastest growing economies of the world and because India is

becoming a global hub for most of the technology and finance companies, hosting F1 will surely encourage more investment and if this race achieves success which d e p e n d s o n g o o d c r o w d , i n f ra s t r u c t u r e a n d m e d i a attention India can be a regional c e n t e r o f e x c e l l e n c e f o r motorsports. And yes with the likes of Narain Karthikayen, Armaan Ebrahim and Karun Chandok already active in the circuit India might get new potential athletes with the promotion of game.

Surely, Indians are pretty excited about this big race. They a r e r e a d y f o r t h e s h o w. Thousands of spectators gathered at Janpath, New Delhi, to catch a glimpse of Formula One racing car in action as Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing was there to enthrall the crowd. After the race Daniel said, “I have never seen anything like this before. I am sure that Red Bull has set millions of pulses racing as India wait for the light to turn green at the Grand Prix later this month.”

So plenty of enthusiasm and excitement awaits Formula One in India surely Indians are eagerly waiting for the lights to go green. It will be an immensely entertaining race, since Indians have a need for speed and the racers have a license to thrill!

The first Formula One in India is set to be a huge entertainer. By Vivek Singh.

Young, Fast and Furious

“Don't praise the day before the evening” were the words of Sebastian Vettel before the Japanese grand prix. He was just a point away from second successive world championship. Expectation were high, so was Vettel's morale, and in the end he scored that all famous one point at one of his favorite circuits Suzuka to join elite league of drivers (Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jack Brabham , Alan Prost, A y r t o n S e n n a , M i c h a e l Schumacher and Fernando Alonso) who have won two successive world championship along with that Vettel is youngest double champion at the age of 24 years beating Fernando Alonso. His second success should be applauded no less for i ts inevitability. The man who makes no mistakes does not usually make anything. Vettel made mistakes but he won because he stopped making them. Last season he was a callow 23-year old but this year he appeared to be a seasoned campaigner.

V e t t e l h a s t o t a l l y dominated the circuit this year. He did it to the extent that even the record of Juan Manuel Fangio's five and Schumacher's seven titles look vividly sharp on the horizon. He started his campaign with a good note as he won five of the opening six races. He started his sequence of victories in the first race in Australia. Two weeks later an emphatic win in Malaysia made it two in two for him. In China it was the turn of Lewis Hamilton to come out victorious. Vettel reasserted his dominance when they moved onto Istanbul. But in Barcelona Vettel showed something more than pure speed and it was required to resist a committed challenge from Lewis

Hamilton who reduced the German's lead by half a second in the closing laps. Nevertheless, Vettel overpowered Hamilton and did not disappoint his fans.By the time Vettel looked very impressive and with victory in M o n a c o h e w a s l o o k i n g invincible. It was Jenson Button who ended Vettel terrific run at Canada. Malaren driver proved that Vettel was not totally impervious to pressure.

But any thought that Button win might produce some excitement in the championship race disappeared in Valencia where Vettel cruised past

thFernando Alonso to register his 6 victory of the championship. After a couple of losses at Silverstone and at the German Grand Prix, it was Vettel all the way. He won races in Belgium, Italy and Singapore and finally at Suzuka (Japan), he emerged as world champion.

S e v e n t i m e s w o r l d champion Michael Schumacher is Vettel's idol and these days he is being compared with him. Comparison with such a great athlete filled him with excitement. He exclaimed, “I never imagined that I would win the world championship and the second world championship and Michael (Schumacher) drives past me doing this (thumbs up)”.

We Inventing the Indian Look

“Taking what the past offers and keeping it relevant to the present” would be the key style statement for all modern Indian women today. Adding a slash of ethnic to a majorly western wardrobe could be fun and trendy for the current fashion scene in India. Our traditional Indian costume such as the sari, the anarkali, patialas, the dhoti or the lahanga choli are successful in intriguing the designer crowd at a global level. In this day and age it might be difficult to carry a sari or a full traditional outfit but none the less it is easy and trendy to add a dash of ethnic. Some easy steps to do the same would be:

Try the Indo-Western look, says Shubhangi Chaturvedi.

A simple makeup trick with a colorful bindi epitomizes the Indian look.

Accessorizing outfit with zary and brocade patch work. Hand bags would be another option.

U s a g e o f j u n k jewelry or ethnic silver jewelry along with most outfit such as a simple kurti and denim combo or even a plain tank top.

Pairing traditionally printed scarves such as a silk scar with bagru print or brocade scar with simple t-shirts, tank top or tube top.

Ethnic printed waist coats would be a more sophisticated way of e n h a n c i n g y o u r traditional look.

Mojari and kolhapuri footwear make any outfit look more trendy and up heeling.

Technology

The job Jobs did

What Steve Jobs did for the world of technology is hard to put together in a single issue of this magazine. Jobs is listed as either primary inventor or co-inventor in 342 United States patents or patent applications. This should be enough to explain the vastness o f h i s c o n t r i b u t i o n s . H i s inventions will be a leading light for generations to come. Here's a look at some of the major things he did for information technology.

1) Apple IIBefore Steve Jobs and Steve W o z n i a k f o u n d e d A p p l e C o m p u t e r s I n c . i n 1 9 7 6 , computers were not 'personal', that is, not meant for the masses, but expensive machines meant mainly for businesses. The Apple II changed everything. It went on to be the hit it was, but apart from that, all homes and offices began buying the new 'personal' computer.

2) iMacApple released the iMac in 1998. With much better performance and more stylish and sleek looks with attractive colours, iMac soon became increasingly popular. It was introduced without the floppy drive, with only the CD-ROM drive.

3) iBookThe iBook, released in 1999, came with the new WiFi technology and at much cheaper, consumer-friendly rates, replacing the high-end Powerbook series meant for the business class. It had a better, more innovative design.

4) iPodiPod wasn't the first portable mp3 player, but it sure was better than the rest, as it still is and hugely popular too. With an amazingly sleek design and thousands of songs on the spin of a wheel, the iPod went on to be synonymous with the mp3 player.

5) iTunesiTunes was released in 2001 and was a media players used to organize audio and video files not only in the computer, but also in the portable devices like iPod and iPhone. Apple then introduced the iTunes Music Store in 2003, which forever changed the way people downloaded and listened to music.

6) iPhoneBefore the iPhone was released in 2007, smartphones were used primarily for chatting and e-mailing. However, iPhone users could surf the internet and have access to countless apps. Each year, technology lovers await the release of a new version of the iPhone. iPhone 4S is the latest version yet.

7) iPadThe iPad is a tablet computer without a USB or keyboard which, upon its release in 2010, met with an overwhelming response, like all other Apple products. The touch sensitive device apt for m o v i e s a n d a p p s m a d e technology lovers go crazy over it.

Steve Jobs left behind him a rich technological legacy.

The iCon of Our Time

Spirituality's loss was technology's gain. If Steven Paul Jobs had succeeded in his quest to achieve enlightenment in India, the world would have been a different place.

In 1974, a few months after Jobs joined the gaming company Atari in California, he sought permission to go to India “to see his guru”. At the age of 22, he was on a mission to discover “the absolutes and the loopholes of science” as well as his own identity. On his spiritual trail to India he came with Dan Kottke, his friend and was from the batch of first employees at Apple. But by all accounts he didn't have a very comfortable time in India.

Confronted with the poor in India, Jobs exchanged his casual wear T-shirt and jeans with lungis. In his new attire, he started his voyage from Delhi to the H i m a l a y a s i n s e a r c h o f enlightenment, where his guru Neem Karoli Baba lived. Surviving on local food, striking hard bargains and dealing with sadhus, Jobs and Kottke navigated the hills only to discover that Baba was dead.

Jobs was soon back in the US and back at Atari where he worked for a few months before deciding to join hands with Steve Wozniak to set up Apple, the company that redefined design and technology. He had met Woznaik during high school and the two had got along from then. What united them was their love for electronics. Jobs, who was born out of a wedlock, had an early interest in electronics thanks to a neighbour. The keenness was also accompanied by what many would term as brash behavior while others might call him pushy.

For instance, when he was in eighth grade and was trying to assemble a frequency counter, he discovered that some crucial components were missing from the kit that he had. While most boys his age would give up, Jobs called William Hewitt, whose second name appears first in the globally acclaimed Hewlett Packard brand of computers. After a 20 minute conversation, Hewitt offered to keep a bag ready for Jobs to pick up, of course with the components in it.

But the same enthusiasm was not visible when Jobs joined college. He dropped out of Reed College within a semester of enrolling in 1972. Many years later, in his Stanford address he said that he decided to leave college as it was consuming too much of his parents' savings. Whatever be the reason, in 1974, Jobs was back in Silicon Valley to join as a technician at Atari.

A year later, he joined hands with Woznaik, then an engineer at HP. The duo pooled together $1,300 to set up Apple. A few months later, a former Intel executive lent them $250,000. There was clear division of labor between Woznaik and Jobs, who dealt with marketing the former's technical prowess. In fact it was Woznaik who designed the original Apple-I.

In 1977, the show-off gizmo gave way to Apple-II, designed in a garage. The hugely successful personal computer was in the market till 1993. But in 1983, Jobs and Woznaik set out to do something new. They came up with Lisa (named after Jobs' daughter whom he did not a c k n o wl e d g e a s h i s c h i l d initially). The computer was a m a j o r t e c h n o l o g i c a l

breakthrough as it was the first commercial computer complete with a graphical interface and a mouse. But this product from Apple – which by then was a Fortune 500 company – proved to be a commercial disaster as the market thought it was over-priced.

Next up was the legendry Macintosh, designed in 1984, using Lisa's graphical interface but faster, and more importantly cheaper. It proved to be an enormous hit in the years to come. But sales were slow to take off.

In 1984, Jobs had roped in

John Sculley from Pepsi, but the

two fell out when it wasn't the

best of times for Apple. Sculley,

who paid rich tribute to Jobs after

h i s d e a t h , e n g i n e e r e d a

boardroom coup in 1985 that saw

Jobs ousted from the company he

had co-founded exactly a decade

ago. “I don't wear the right kind of

pants to run this company,” he had

told his colleagues at Apple before

his departure.Out of Apple, Jobs did what

h e k n e w b e s t , w o r k o n technology. So, he set up NeXT Computer Systems, came up with new personal computers NeXT Cube and NeXT Station as well as a new operating system NeXTStep, which was the first UNIX based desktop meant for mass market. Unfortunately, NeXT wasn't to be the next Apple . By 1993, newspapers including the likes of the Wall Street Journal were writ ing Jobs ' professional obituary.

After all in February of that year Next Inc. was not in the business of making computers, within weeks his president and

CEO quit and several computer makers formed a software alliance that did not include NeXT. Media was talking about how Jobs was rude while dealing with Bill Gates several years ago. But what it didn't realize was that some of the efforts that went into NeXT will go into laying a fresh foundation for Apple, when Jobs returned.

Along with setting up NeXT, Jobs also acquired a stake in Pixar in 1986, which has redefined animation films in the same way as Apple has changed computing, phones and digital music. Enthralled by Pixar's technology, Jobs put in $5 million for a stake in the company when its future was uncertain. Later, he invested another $5 million. The company produced a series of hit films starting with “The Toy Story” in 1995.

In 1997, 22 years after he founded the company, Apple acquired NeXT for $430 million and Jobs was back at Apple, this time as an advisor. Three years later he was again designated CEO, marking a second coming in the real sense. But this time he was going to be much more successful, seeing the design, production and launch of one innovative product after another – from iTunes to iPod, iPhone and iPad. Within a span of less than a decade, Jobs and his team had merged music with phones and then with computing. The convergence was complete.

The man who would be seen wearing the trademark blue jeans and long-sleeved turtle neck T-shirts combined his design skills with technology prowess that he developed over the years despite not been an engineer himself. There are some 342

Apple patents – ranging from computercases to keyboards, mouse and even packaging – that list Jobs among the group of inventors.

Known for setting tough standards, the buzz is that he t h r e w a w a y t w o i P h o n e prototypes before they finally hit the market in 2007. He also set tough targets. When iPhone was launched Jobs intended to sell 10 million handsets so that Apple could have 1% of the global pie. It's a different matter that 11.6 million handsets were sold.

By his own admission, Jobs had matured over the years – after all he was human. From being rude, hands-on and looking too much into details during his first stint at Apple, Jobs grew into a CEO who depended on others, heard and trusted them with design and development. But the final call would always be his as he sought to marry technology and popular culture.

But while Jobs was busy

reinventing technology, his health

kept on deteriorating ever since

he was diagnosed with a rare form

of pancreatic cancer, though

curable. In 2004, Jobs underwent

surgery. Five years, later, he got a

liver transplant. He took medical

leave from the company but kept

working on new products that

ensured that Apple stayed ahead

of the pack.

Given the tough personal

life, which resembled a soap

opera, it was not surprising that

Jobs battled hard with illness. On th

the 24 day of February 1955,

Jobs was born to a Syrian

Abdulfattah Jandali and Joanne

Carole Schieble. Since he was

born out of wedlock, Paul and

Clara Jobs were his parents after

adoption. But Jobs would make the same mistake that his biological parent made. He fathered a child when he was 23 but refused to accept Lisa Nicole (after whom a computer was named). It was only after a protracted legal battle that he a g r e e d t o p a y f o r h e r maintenance.

He found his love in 1989, when he saw Laurene Powell during a lecture at Stanford University. After the lecture, Jobs asked Powell out for dinner and love blossomed. They got married two years later.

Between all this he had s i m p l i f i e d c o m p u t i n g a n d telephony and married them all t o g e t h e r. N o wo n d e r, t h e m o u r n i n g s t r e t c h e d f r o m California to Cambodia and he draws comparison with Thomas Edison.In August 2011, Jobs finally decided to step down. By then, he was probably too ill to continue. “I could no longer meet my duties and expectations,” Jobs said.Timothy D Cook was appointed chief operating officer and Jobs spent the last few weeks at his home – which was not a mansion in a private locality but on a public street – with his family. Finally, on October 6, 2011 he died, leaving behind a legacy that would be tough, if not impossible, to match.

When he was in eighth grade and was trying to assemble a frequency counter, he discovered that some crucial components were missing from the kit that he had. While most boys his age would give up, Jobs called William Hewitt, whose second name appears first in the globally acclaimed Hewlett Packard brand of computers.

The band is totally out of the commercial scene and strictly sticks to the regional and national competitions which can give us a platform to represent our real taste. The band has won all the major competitions in the city along with many best guitarist and best bassist awards. We have also competed at the national level.

YY: Why the name 'Chaotic Mantra'?CM: The name Chaotic Mantra was suggested by our vocalist. He said, “This signifies what we intend to do… Chaossssss…” The name also represents our originality by the name mantra.

YY: What's the current line-up of the band?CM: The current and the original line up of the band is Kushagra Anand on vocals, Abhishek Kumar on lead guitar and backing vocals, Animesh Kumar Singh on bass g u i t a r, S u r a j M i s h r a o n keyboard/fx/backing vocals and Harsh Upadhyay on drums and percussions. Besides that the band has also been in associated acts with other bands. Anshuman Singh (The D.N.T) has played and won the best bassist award in the absence of our bassist. Sumitabh

YY: What were challenges you faced in the beginning? CM: Like most of the other bands, we've also faced many difficulties like lack of financial support, good equipments, sponsors and above all, opposition from our families in this field. Luckily, we managed to handle those circumstances.

YY: Did you guys have a d i f f e re n t t a s te o f m u s i c initially?CM: Yeah we did, but as the time passed we adjusted ourselves with each others' style and emerged as what we are today.

YY: When Chaotic Mantra was formed, did you guys want to be a cover band or did you aim at a career in music?CM: We didn't actually aim at a career in music, but yes, we always try to compete in the national level to get us a platform where we can serve something to the Indian metal scene.

YY: Which genre/band cover will you love to play apart from your regular genre?CM: My personal choice would be Pink Floyd, I've always wanted to play their songs live.

YY: Which is your favourite concert till date?CM: All of our concerts have been very close to our hearts but the best audience we've ever had was at Synchronicity (Antaragni, IIT-K).

YY: What's your say on the music industry of India today?CM: It lacks originality, music directors of our industry must learn to make their own music rather than picking it up from others' hard work. I have a lot more things to say but I think I must stop here!

Y Y: W h i c h o t h e r I n d i a n artistes/bands you'd like to perform with?CM: Demonic Resurrection, Scribe, Pralay and Bhayanak Maut are some of the bands which have influenced us and it would be an honour for us to share the stage with them someday.

Go Green

Green tea is made with the leaves of Camellia Sinensis, which have undergone least oxidation during processing. Green Tea originated from China but now it has spread its wings in many countries of Asia like Japan, South Korea and Middle East. It has taken over the Western World where black tea has been predominant for years and gained a strong foothold there because of its unparalleled benefits.

The climatic conditions, conditions for growth, processing and harvesting have great bearing on the variety of the Green Tea and the difference in these, results in a number of variations in Green Tea. Science and medicine both have conducted various studies to prove the inequitable benefits of Green Tea. Two basic variants of Green Tea are:

·Japanese Green Tea·Chinese Green Tea

Due to its omnipresence, Green Tea is universally called 'Tea' in Japan. The varieties of Green Tea available in Japan are many. Different varieties vary on the basis of flavour, price and quality. Kyoto's Uji region and Fukuoka Prefecture's Yame region produce the finest and best Green Tea in Japan. Gyokuro, a green tea of Japan is said to be the best and highest grade among all varieties of tea available.

Other types of Green Tea are Kahwah Green tea from the Kashmir Valley and Green Tea from Ceylon. China, Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia are large producers of green tea.Caffeine is a basic component of tea and green tea also contains caffeine unless it has been decaffeinated. If one wants to compare the caffeine content in

The iAwesome Column

An apple a day not only keeps the doctor away but also helps one create history. I wonder if god ever knew how much more an apple could mean to people, much more than just a fruit rich in iron. Had he known what wonders Steve Jobs would do to its name, god would have questioned his own intelligence!

When an invention becomes a life-long obsession and dependence, you call it an Apple.A few years ago, toddlers used to learn the English alphabet in the following formata for appleb for ball c for catd for doll“Balls” soon got replaced with “blackberries” (the heavenly fruits running on batteries, not to be mistaken by the ones falling off trees), “chatting” replaced “cats”, while “Apple”(yeah, the one with the half an eaten apple logo) erased the existence of apple, the fruit.

I can totally imagine an argument taking place between the toddlers of the iPhone league and their teachers, some of them still comfortable with Nokia 3300, on preferring either apple over the other. The kid would quite obviously choose the one that helps him Facebook! So here are some of the probable arguments given by the kid over preferring The Apple, over the once-used-to-be-The apple.

1. I don't have to wait for something to grow, off which it could fall one day.2. It doesn't give me nutrients and vitamins, but it compensates by giving me access to Google so that I can still keep the doctor away.3. It's much sleeker and elegant. Also, my girlfriends like it better too.4. I can chat with people all day, get weather forecasts, movie reviews, Facebook updates; get it recharged with just one click. Now, c'mon, no variety of apples can do that!5. Its seedless!

Considering the dominance of Apples and iPhones, the launch of newer gadgets like iFamily, iHouse and iLife isn't very far.
