Significant rainfall recorded last week slowed harvest progress in most areas of the province. Fifteen per cent is swathed or is ready to straight-cut. The five-year average for this time of year (2008-2012) is 74 per cent com-bined and 18 per cent swathed or

itation was reported in the south-western, east-central and north-eastern regions. Many areas in the southwestern, southeastern and east-central regions have been experiencing rain delays for a couple of weeks.
Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as five per cent surplus, 65 per cent adequate, 19 per cent short and 11 per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay and pasture land is rated as two per cent surplus, 63 per cent adequate, 24 per cent short and 11 per cent very short.
Pasture conditions are rated as nine per cent excellent, 43 per cent good, 29 per cent fair, 16 per cent poor and three per cent very poor.
Rain and strong winds caused the majority of the crop damage. The rain has resulted in bleaching and sprouting of some cereal crops. Wind has caused some shattering losses in swathed canola and ripe crops.
Farmers are busy combining, hauling bales and completing fall weed control.

On this day in History1982: First Canadian to conquer Everest
Laurie Skreslet has become the first Canadian to climb to the top of the highest mountain in the world. Along with two Sherpa guides, Skreslet, 32, safe-ly reaches the peak of Mount Everest, even though he chooses to climb up the risky southern path. He spends 33 minutes on the summit. In a Toronto Star interview on Oct. 28, 1982, Skreslet said, “As I pulled up, it was the first time I thought: ‘Wow, I’m on top of the world. There’s nothing on the surface of the earth that’s higher.’”
• At 8,848 m, Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. The excruciatingly thin air slows mountaineers to a crawl, weak-ens judgment, dulls thirst and appetite and endangers their lives. At the top, only one-third of the air’s usual oxygen is available. • In summer 1982, Skreslet and 19 other mountaineers set off to climb Mount Everest, in the Himalayas on the border of Ne-pal and Tibet. The Canadian Mount Everest Expedition took five years to plan, $3 million to fund, and 27 tons of equipment to outfit. • Four team members - a Canadian and three Sherpas - died in the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, the part of Everest every climber dreads. Skreslet bruised three ribs helping to recover the body of Canadian team member, photographer Blair Griffiths. Six of the original climbers turned back. • The Canadian team was the 21st expedition to successfully climb to the top of Mount Everest. Some 46 had attempted the feat. Only 100 climbers had made it to the summit before. Two days after Skreslet, Pat Morrow became the second and only other team member to reach the peak. • Born in Calgary, Alta, on Oct. 25, 1949, Skreslet was introduced to climbing in 1970. By 1972 he was a member of a successful ex-pedition to Huascaràn (6,768 m), Peru’s high-est mountain. He climbed in expeditions al-most every year after, in South America, the U.S., and the British Isles. After becoming the first Canadian to stand atop the world, he also attempted Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) - the world’s third largest peak.

A man was cleaning out old clothes from his closet,
planning to give them to charity. In the pocket of a suit coat he
found a shoe-repair ticket, about ten years old.
“I believe that place is still in business,” he thought, so he went
down to the shop. Without saying anything, he presented
the ticket. The man behind the counter
looked at the number and said, “I’ll have them for you

5 TIPS FOR CLEANING FOR FALL (TIP 4 OF 5)By Sara Elliott
These five important autumn chores will help get you prepared for winter and save you from having to play catch up during those short winter weekends when there never seems to be enough time or energy to get things done before it gets dark outside.
4: CLEAN AND ORGANIZE THE GARAGE It’s pretty common to cringe when you consider cleaning the garage. For lots of folks, the condition of the garage is a guilty secret. If space in its dark expanse is getting so tight that the car won’t even fit inside anymore, it’s time to get that clutter under control. This can be a big job if you haven’t done it in a while, so start with some preliminary recon. Take an inventory of what your garage contains and how you’d like to organize the space. Make a list of things you’re planning to pitch. Move from there to stuff you want to give away, like old toys or that exercise equipment that you never use. Your third list should include items that you plan on keeping, but start to see them in relation to the space. Begin at the car entry door and work back. Keep the most useful items, like tools, in front. Anything you won’t use for six months or more can be positioned toward the back. Make some notes on the list to remind you of where put what. If you know that you still have lots more stuff than your garage can com-fortably accommodate, try considering a few creative storage alternatives, like wall shelves or overhead bins. Storage doesn’t have to be expensive, and getting things up off the ground will liberate a surprising amount of space. Camping gear, sports equipment, pool toys and some larger tools can be affixed to the wall or placed on a high shelf to make getting around easier and less hazard-ous. Once you have a plan, pull everything out of the garage into your three piles, sweep or go over the floor with a wet-dry vacuum, and install any shelving or bins. Now, you’re ready to start putting away the things you plan on keeping. This chore alone could easily take a weekend, but after that, maintaining a clear and useful garage space will be easy.
