[yourclub] CULTURE SURVEY

SURVEY INFORMATION
The survey consists of 20 questions divided into 5 segments of 4 components each. The players
are asked to rate each statement on a scale of 1-4, where a rating of 1 would indicate that the
player has little or no awareness of this statement being actioned at the club and 4 indicating the
player thinks the statement is completed consistently and well at the club.
The results are compiled and an average score across all players who completed the survey is
presented both in table form and as a 360 degree chart. Clubs should be able to quickly identify
which segment(s) scored the lowest and it is recommended that a club focus on improving only
one segment at a time, starting with the segment with the lowest overall score.
This survey was open to players from [your club] for approximately two weeks in December 2015
with promotion occurring through email, social media and instant messenger. Approximately ##
players were directly contacted and asked to complete the survey with ## doing so by the closing
date.

VALUES AND CULTURE
YOUR CLUB SCORE: 3.29
INTRODUCTION
An explicit statement of the Values and Culture of your club will help your players,
administrators, volunteers and members to feel a strong sense of belonging and ownership to
the club. Different clubs exist for different reasons and have different objectives. A sub-elite club
may exist to develop talent and engage with the community. A suburban club may exist to offer
a community hub and family friendly environment which an old scholars club may exist to
maintain connection with the school and promote friendship and lifelong connections.
Whatever the reason is for your club to exist, it is important that all members are engaged in the
process of developing and subsequently exhibiting the values and culture statements that have
been established.
But the tricky thing can be defining these terms….what is the difference between Vision and
Mission, Values and Culture, Objectives and Actions? See the best practice section for more
information on these definitions.
YOUR CLUB RESULTS
[your club] scored well in this sector with a score of 3.29 out of a maximum of 4. This indicates
that most players feel that the club vision, mission and values are consistently referred to and
that players do have buy-in to the overall direction and culture of the club, however there may
be some room to increase the consistency with which these statements are communicated to
players.
The main area for improvement in this sector is regularity of which the mission, vision and
values are referred to at the club. This question scored 3.21 which was the lowest of the 4
questions in this sector and below the average of 3.29 for your club in this sector.

BEST PRACTICE
VISION
The Vision is the “North Star” statement. It describes the pinnacle for an organisation – a grand
statement of where it desires to be. It is usually long term and extremely ambitious. The Vision
will usually be quite succinct, and it should be recognised and understood by all members of the
organisation.
Examples
Microsoft: "Empower people through great software anytime, anyplace, and on any
device."
Cricket Australia: “To be Australia's Favourite Sport - A Sport for All Australians.”
SACA: “To lead the way to be South Australia’s favourite sport.”
MISSION
The Mission defines the current state of the organisation. By reading the Mission Statement,
your members should be able to determine:
What it does
Who it does it for
How it does it
Examples
The Rotary Foundation: “To enable Rotarians to advance world understanding,
goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education,
and the alleviation of poverty.”
Make-A-Wish: “We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical
conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”
SACA: “To dominate cricket in Australia, be South Australia’s most sought after
membership and be worthy of our loyal fans.”

VALUES
Values are the essence of club culture as they set out the dos and don’ts of how “we operate
around here”. It is one thing to state values, it is another to live them. Values should be
formulated to espouse the Club Vision. All members should have the opportunity to contribute
to Club Values as they become an agreement of the way members engage with the club.
Examples
o Cricket Australia: Our strategy – Spirit of Cricket – Integrity – Diversity
o Lion: Passion – Wellbeing – Sociability – Achieving together – Integrity
o Adelaide Crows: Health & Wellbeing – Coaching & Education – Competitive
Advantage – Leadership Excellence
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR CLUB
Consider how you present and reinforce the Vision, Mission and Values of the club. Where can the key messages be displayed publically and when can coaches and leaders of the club speak about them to players and members. The club may wish to develop a title for these types of statements; for example “The Power Way” or similar.
Some opportunities to do the above may exist through:
Match reports, newsletters, annual reports;
End-of-match presentations by captains, coach etc;
Pre-match and pre-training briefings;
Post-match and post-training debriefs;
Selection of teams – players selected for exemplifying the club values;
Signage, posters in clubrooms, change rooms and taken and placed in conspicuous positions when playing away;
Social media – Facebook Pages/Groups, Twitter etc.
Special Awards for players and volunteers that best demonstrate/role model the Club Values.
