threatening. “ -Maya Angelou

omen seem to have been born with an innate ten-dency to compete and jostle for position, even in

situations where there is absolutely no need for it. Even com-pliments are delivered with an undertone that implies that there is always something more to a seemingly innocuous statement like, “I love your hair that way”, for example. We tend to form tight circles and give off an air of indifference to those on the outside of it; alliances and enemies are formed and carried for years, often for reasons that no one can quite remember anymore.

A physically attractive, successful woman will often be under-mined by her own contemporaries, as snide remarks about how she might have achieved what she did are whispered in hushed conferences in the office cafeteria. It is not usually the case where the hushed conversations are about the long hours that a colleague might have put in at her desk to get a promotion. It may not be unique to women, but it does seem to be more prevalent among the fairer sex. Women seem to find it difficult to compliment beauty, status and accom-plishments, while men have no problem making new friends, complimenting their contemporaries’ achievements and pos-sessions. Could it really be hardwired into our DNA or are we raised to think that we are in a constant tussle for posi-tion, and as such we respond accordingly?

Psychologists have intimated that a lot of the bad blood be-tween women originates from feelings of low self esteem, which they project outwardly by tearing down of their fellow women. Us women are constantly bombarded in the mass media about how we should look and act, so much so that it’s easy to think that this is all one big race, and the only way to get ahead is to try to trip a person that we perceive to be ahead of us, or in some cases, trip the ones behind us just to be sure.

It is probably the difference between jealousy and envy that separates men and women. Do you remember that old joke that goes: A man says, “Your wife is great, I want one just like her”, a woman says, “Your husband is great, I want him”? Ev-erybody gets envious of another’s possessions at some time or the other and that’s only natural, but is healthy enough in small doses as it can motivate us as it seems to do in men; it’s the jealousy that stems from insecurities that makes a lot of female-female interactions so unhealthy.

It will probably never change, but we should attempt to add some semblance of balance to the way we interact with each

other. The discord and disunity that jealousy breeds has been one of the reasons that women have not progressed as far and as fast as we should. Men find ways to cooperate even when they don’t like each other, and they are rarely threat-ened by the addition of new members to their group. Ob-serve the men in their natural habitat and see that there are a number of things that we could take from their male bravado and blind loyalty to their friends.

Thyme for A CoughIf the worrying news

about over-the-counter cough syrup has you down, try this natural al-ternative from Quick & Simple.

Add three tablespoons of dried thyme to one pint of boiling wa-ter. Let cool, then add one cup of honey. Take one teaspoon ev-ery hour as needed. You can store the mix in the fridge for up to three months.

ViTAmin C To PreVenT ColdsCold and flu season in the United States (US) stretches from November to March. As many as one in five US residents contracts influenza, and most people come down with a cold – two or three of them per season.

To ward off these common illnesses, boost your immune system with natural food sources of vi-tamin C. Studies have shown that vitamin pills aren’t as effective at warding off many diseases. Other potential natural cold-preventatives include the herb andrographis, zinc and elderberry extract, but vitamin C has the best track record.

TeA for sore ThroATs

A little illness can take a lot out of you -like your voice or your desire to speak at all.

For a sore throat, the tea remedy is as old as time, it seems. Try jujube tea for an extra vitamin C boost.

leAfy greens for nosebleeds

Dry indoor air, coupled with a sneeze can be a recipe for nosebleeds.

A daily cup of leafy greens can provide enough vitamin K to fortify sensitive capil-

laries and help your blood clot quickly.

nuTs for energyThere’s nothing like watching the sunset from your office window night after night to suck the energy out of you.

Find time to exercise and to laugh, get enough sleep — and look to unsalted nuts like almonds for a good energy booster. Raisins or dried apricots are also good options.

PineAPPles for beTTer digesTionEating well during the holiday season is a goal more than a reality for many of us. All that bad food can make your digestive tract complain loudly.

Make a half cup of pineapple part of your rou-tine to reduce intestinal inflammation, speed the breakdown of protein and, most importantly, reduce gas.

TomAToes for burnsFor minor burns, slice a tomato and apply it to the burn, allowing the juice to fully dry. Tomatoes have nature’s big-gest dose lycopene, an antioxidant that has anti-inflamma-tory properties Celery for

beTTer sleePCold nights, the stress of the holiday season can throw off your sleep pattern. If all the usual non-medicinal remedies have failed you, try munching some celery for the sedative

powers of the phthalides it contains.

Be aware, though, that celery is one of the foods with the most pesticide residue, so buy organic whenever possible

definite deal-breaker during house hunting can be the size of a closet. It often mystifies men how we seek a larger closet as if it’s a challenge to try to fill it. Space will always be a factor irrespective of how huge the closet is and the

bigger closet a woman has, the more she tends to run out of space. So just in case you are running out of space or if you already have, these five essentials will help to organize and declutter your closet life.

dress ProTeCTors/CoVers: Keep all your formal wear in a clear bag and preferably to the back of the closet, so when it is time to wear them you don’t have to worry about search-ing for the dress you want. Also, dirt and dust will not be a factor. The use of a clear bag is best so you know ex-actly what is in each bag.

CleAr shoe boxes: Some women like to take photos of their shoes and put them on the outside of each box so it is easy to put shoes away and find them later, but uniformity is key and if the shoe boxes are clear it is even better to locate them. These boxes can also be used to organize a mil-

lion other household items.

uniform hAngers: Using the same hangers will instantly give your closet a neat-er and tidier appearance. My personal favorites are Huggable Hangers, which enable you to maximize your space.

shelf diViders: These are perfect for keeping your purses, pants and sweaters in order. Handbags are always an organizational challenge. Some persons find that standing them up on a shelf works best, you should be able to tell what’s

best based on your closet space.

bins, bins, bins: Labeled bins are a must! Especially if you share a closet. Use sepa-rate bins for socks, undergarments, pantyhose, hats, and other miscel-laneous items that may not have a home.
