You can help us reach a goal of providing 120,000 meals to families New Castle and Sussex County communities during Thanksgiving and the early part of 2018. Those 120,000 meals will require 60 tons of nonperishable food to be donated by you. We need you to provide the nonperishable items on our list before Thanksgiving if we are to reach the hurting families in desperate need of food. The items you contribute are combined to provide the foundation for nutritious meals for up to seven days. Your donations are essential to providing meals to 7,000 individuals alone during SBM’s week-long Great Thanksgiving Feast celebration, which is possible only through your support. One bag of groceries donated by you from the list will provide the foundation for at least 20 meals. Nutritious meals you provide offer a family gripped in poverty, hurting and hungry, a time of comfort. Here is how you can make Thanksgiving Thankful; donate to the 120,000 meals. Kennedy’s Book Nook Donates to

SBM ChildrenRecently SBM was blessed to receive a large donation of books from Ms. Kennedy Crowder,

founder of “Kennedy’s Book Nook”. These books are a great addition to SBM’s “Alazar’s Library” that was established in memory of Rev and Mrs. Laymon’s adopted son. The children of SBM access the library on a daily basis. Kennedy began her project after encountering children who did not have access to books and who were delayed in reading readiness as a result. Her mission is to collect “new and gently loved books”, in addition to other literacy items and donate them to organizations such as Sunday Breakfast Mission. Kennedy says, “The Sunday Breakfast Mission has a long-standing history of serving our community and providing services to individuals and families in need. I have seen the mission in action first hand as I have served as a volunteer: collecting personal hygiene items and assembling Hope Totes, baking biscuits for Operation Biscuit Brigade and organizing the clothing, furniture and other household items in the Thrift Store.” “Kennedy’s Book Nook” has donated approximately 100 books to SBM. These books will be a great addition to the library that services the women and children’s shelter.

YOU like Kennedy have been instrumental in donating on many levels to SBM. YOUR donations have fed the hungry, have given clothing to the needy, and have sheltered the poor. YOUR giving has meant the difference to thousands of individuals over the years and together we can continue to bring healing and strength to hurting souls. There are many other opportunities for YOU to partner with SBM; your gifts, resources and finances can all be used at SBM. Give us a call today so we can explore ways to demonstrate God’s compassion and care to the less fortunate men, women and children that step into SBM for shelter.

We have shared with you in the past about donated cars helping impoverished community families and SBM graduates. But did you know that when you donate used vehicles to Sunday Breakfast Mission you help us accomplish our mission? Donated vehicles allow us to accomplish many jobs that require transportation from one place to another. For example, a donated SUV allows our Church/Community Relations Manager, Rev. Nancy Wheeler, to visit churches and schools to share about the mission of SBM. Often the vehicle is packed on the return trip with a generous supply of in-kind donations like toiletries, Care-Ware items, food, or school supplies. This is just one way a donated vehicle is used to meet the needs of the people we serve. In

addition, our staff drives residents to medical appointments and our vans are used by our Youth and Children’s Specialists to take resident children on special outings or activities designed for them. Daily vehicles are used to pick up food from generous local and regional businesses that are providing food items for our kitchen. This is a necessity as SBM prepares over 700 meals a day to serve to residents in our discipleship program, overnight guests, and community families in need of an evening meal. YOUR donated vehicles help us operate more efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of the hurting and hungry who come to SBM for help in their time of need. We thank you for donating your vehicle today. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUSITY.

The smell of a cooked turkey on Thanksgiving Day along with all the aromas swirling together from your favorite prepared dishes brings a smile to your face and fond memories flood your mind. You can make it possible for a family in your community, perhaps even your neighbor to experience the same joy of celebrating Thanksgiving with friends and family with a turkey as a center of the feast. We need your help to gather at least 2200 turkeys this year to be given out and used during Great Thanksgiving Week. Many of you ask how the Sunday Breakfast Mission can require so many turkeys at Thanksgiving. Rev Tom Laymon provides an insight, “During the week of our Great Thanksgiving Feast we provide 1500 families with turkeys along with their food boxes to enjoy a great feast in their home. We also, through donors, provide a full course Thanksgiving dinner to upwards of 1200 individuals as part of the Great Thanksgiving Feast on Thanksgiving Day. In order to provide this level of nutritious meals, anchored by a delicious turkey, we need you to put over 2200 turkeys in our freezers by the Monday before Thanksgiving.”

You can provide an individual turkey or be the catalyst to conduct a turkey collection drive where you work, at your church, or social group. Won’t you be the first to add feathers to our featherless turkey erected outside of the SBM building? With your help over 7500 individuals will be blessed by you through your turkey donations. Your turkeys can be dropped off at the Sunday Breakfast Mission at 110 N. Poplar Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.

The sound of dozens of basketballs bouncing on the floor and careening off the basketball backboards, set the atmosphere for the week long 3rd Annual Alazar’s Co-Ed Basketball Camp. The week of July 17-21, seventy-five 9, 10 and 11 year old boys and girls were able to experience learning about the game of basketball as well the importance of godly character and how to be a team player. Your support and and the generous $6000 grant from Delaware City Refining Co. made it possible to provide 75 children from the city to experience a week of excitement and bonding with volunteer coaches. Each day began

with a special free lunch prepared and served by the Mission and followed by two hours of drills, learning plays, shooting contests and action packed five-on-five basketball games. All the activities were under the supervision of “Coach” Newell, who facilitates inner city basketball camps in Philadelphia. When Coach Newell Smith is not busy conducting basketball camps he serves as a District Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene. Newell, being able to combine two of his greatest passions, basketball and Jesus, provided the children of Wilmington a message of hope.

Story Behind Alazar’s Basketball CampTowards the end of the camp, every child sat silently, totally focused, listening

intently as Rev. Thomas Laymon shared the story of his adopted son, Alazar. Alazar was adopted by Rev. Tom and Janice Laymon and went home to be with the Lord in August of 2013. The story was shared how Alazar developed two passions quickly in his time with the Laymon’s; basketball and love for Jesus. The camp is a dream of the Laymons to remember him and his passions.

Your Generosity Provides Real Hope for Children in WilmingtonOnly because of our faithful donors is it possible to offer this amazing experience

to the children, children in many case who are hurting and hungry. You make it possible for Sunday Breakfast Mission to share the message of not using alcohol and drugs. It is because you care, a message of hope and encouragement to follow Jesus for a new life was shared with children from Wilmington. You can support the Sunday Breakfast Mission’s goal of providing opportunities for children by going to https://donate.sundaybreakfastmission.org today.

John had grown up trying to be a good kid, but his hard headed nature would have him bail out of school at age 14. The destructive attraction to drugs and alcohol, which began in high school, would grow and ultimately control, shape and guide his life. He was a functional user for years: one man by day and another by night; yet was able to report to work and keep his job. In the early years, cocaine and alcohol were enough to escape the depression of divorce and loneliness. The plunge into the abyss of opioid drugs would come via recovery from a severe work injury. The doctors prescribed OxyContin to control the pain. A pattern began to develop in which the pills were gone before the prescription could be renewed and the gap times were filled with excessive alcohol and buying opioid pills on the street.

John said, “I knew I had become an addict when I was stealing money from my parents and friends for the sole purpose of purchasing drugs. I destroyed the relationship with my mom and dad and was living in a run down, dirty, hot and dangerous dump.” He cycled through a couple of thirty-day treatment and various step programs, but they did not deal with the depression, anger and frustration that plagued him. It would be a probation officer

and couple of family members who pointed him to Sunday Breakfast Mission.

The Decision that Changed John’s LifeIn July 2016, John entered the discipleship

program at the Mission. He shares, “I was so broken, did not have a dime and was exhausted. I saw the Mission as a place to help hold me over; to be a safe place to stay for a few weeks. I had no idea what God had planned for me that first day.” The first major

change was while sitting at evening chapel under the preaching of Pastor Donald. I was saved. Born again in Jesus; gone were the chains of my past.” That turn would be the foundation of an attitude change, a heart change and a new mind set with a desire to live differently for Jesus. John notes, “Suddenly I no longer was the hard-headed guy. I was a guy who wanted to listen. I wanted to be in the education classes and Biblical counseling classes. I eagerly volunteered my free time to help with projects and helping others. I now could hardly wait to read and meditate on God’s Word.”

Now, a year later through many shed tears and tough days fighting against the call of drugs and alcohol, anger, depression and destroyed relationships John can report that his relationship with his mom and dad is restored and he is attending church every week with them as well as helping them with projects at their house. He now has hope. He dreams of being the man God is calling him to be and is trusting God for future relationships. He sees using his abilities to get a good paying job and his own place. John shares, “I want to let you, SBM donors, know how grateful I am to you for making this place available to me. You helped make a new life possible for me and provided a way for me to restore my relationship with my parents. I went through other programs that focused on just staying clean for a few weeks, but the program here at SBM is about changing lives. It is a great program. Thank you.” You can support Sunday Breakfast Mission’s work of transforming lives like John’s by giving today at www.sundaybreakfastmission.org or text sbmhomeless to 50155 to give.

Relationships incredibly restored

“You helped make a new life possible for me and provided a way for me to

restore my relationship with my parents … THANK YOU.”

“I had no idea what God had planned for

me that first day (at SBM).”

John entered the doors of the Mission depressed, cynical, tired and without

hope. He was at the end of his twenty year journey which had spiraled from being a hard headed rebellious teenager to being a drug addict. All his relationships had been destroyed, including one he thought would be impossible to destroy: his relationship with his parents. Now, a year later, John has restored his relationship with his parents and others, and trusts in God for each day and for his future.

YOU CAN GIVE NOW.

Volunteers Always Needed at SBM

A team of TD Bank employees gather in the warehouse to sort non-perishable food used in preparation for daily meals at SBM and for packing in food boxes distributed to families

in need.

Wilmington Christian School middle schoolers wrap napkins and forks, a daily need for SBM evening community meals

that feed the area homeless and impoverished families. THANK YOU FOR HELPING!

Volunteers provide much needed services at Sunday Breakfast Mission. Schools, churches, and individuals can all be a part of providing for the needs of the homeless and hurting people in the Wilmington area. Go to www.sundaybreakfastmission.org to complete a volunteer

Do you ever feel like you hardly recognize our world anymore? It’s important to remember that no matter how times and trends change, we can take hope in knowing spiritual truths and values won’t – they just need to be shared. Here are two questions to ask yourself:

1. What values do I want to pass along? What makes your heart beat? Are there any important experiences or life lessons you’ve never shared with those you love? You can help build a framework for what really matters simply by sharing the passions and beliefs you hold most dear.

2. How can I best share my values? Communicating your values doesn’t have to feel intimidating. Many Christians are choosing to create or update their Will so it aligns with their values — taking care of loved ones first and then including a gift to support a ministry they care about like Sunday Breakfast Mission. This is a creative way to share values and change lives.

Trends don’t have the final word. You can positively impact the next generation simply by sharing from your heart.

8 Sunday Breakfast Mission Summer 2017 www.sundaybreakfastmission.org

Sunday Breakfast Mission serves the homeless, addicted and impoverished through Christ-centered programs to meet their spiritual, social and physical needs. Our primary goal is to restore people to right relationships to God, their families and society.

The SBM Choir, comprised of men enrolled in the Sunday Breakfast Mission’s Discipleship Program, is faithfully spreading the message of God through song. This summer the choir, under the direction of Mrs. Virginia Vaalburg, sang at the “2017 Duty to God and Country” Breakfast - Del-Mar-Va Council, Boy Scouts of America. The choir opened the early morning event with the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner” and culminated with the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The theme of the Boy Scouts of America breakfast was to celebrate “The Virtues of Service to God and Country.” For the men enrolled in SBM’s Discipleship Program it was an opportunity to “Make a joyful noise to the Lord” while encouraging others through song. The men have commented, “The best thing about singing (in the SBM Men’s Choir) is the experience of singing to an audience and knowing it is appreciated.” Some stated, “I could not hold a note but learned so much about singing” (after joining SBM’s choir). Our choir director, Virginia, is always looking for an occasion to schedule the choir to participate in services and special events. Would you invite the men to sing and to have our President and CEO Rev. Laymon share a message of encouragement at your next fellowship, special event, church service or annual program? Rev. Laymon and the Men’s Discipleship Choir are ready to share their message of love and hope at your next gathering. Give us a call today at (302) 652-8314.
