Elkem SiliconesGeneral Introduction
What are silicones? The term “silicone” has been used to describe a variety of organosilicon compounds. Silicon denotes the chemical element (Si), which cannot be found in the pure state, but is present in chemically and thermally stable mineral compounds. The common term ”silicone” refers to the chemical family of “polyorganosiloxanes”.In practice, for release coatings, the organo part of the polymer is a methyl group, but other constituents can be seen on the Si atoms.
Properties of Silicone PolymersSilicone polymers have many attractive features, including :• Resistance to extreme temperature• Electrically non-conductive• Resistance to weathering• Low degree of toxicity• Low surface energy
The silicones used in Elkem Silicones Silcolease® systems rely on certain specific properties :• A three dimensional network which is relatively elastic and hydrophobic.• A non-migratory low surface energy coating.
The unique properties of the coated and cured silicone layer gives a non-stick surface which does not alter final adhesive performance.

Elkem SiliconesGeneral Introduction
Silicones in “release coating” applications and typical substrate choicesThe silicone coated paper or film is commonly known as a “release liner”. The grades of film or paper used are often quite specific to this application. Major substrate types are listed below:
Glassine & Super Calendered Krafts (SCK) Highly dense and smooth surface paper used widely as liner in label industry and accounting for nearly 40% of all release liner papers.
Polyolefin coated Kraft and in particular Polyethylene coated Kraft (PEK) A basic kraft paper with a thin layer of PE used to close the surface. This paper offers excellent dimensional stability and is an economic solution to achieve high smoothness and holdout with a basic paper quality. This paper is used very widely in Asia and accounts today for just under 20% of the global release liner volume.
Clay Coated Kraft (CCK)Kraft paper with a holdout coating of clay filled latex. This paper is widely used in Europe and North America for applications requiring excellent dimensional stability such as graphics. CCK accounts for nearly 15% of the total release liner production.
Film liners Film materials have seen strong growth rates in recent years. Depending on the specific grade, the advantages vary from smoothness, die cutting, strength, cost or recyclability. Common films are PET, OPP and PE (HD & LD) but the more heat sensitive of those are usually coated with radiation cured silicones. Films account for nearly 20% of the global release liner market.
Other paper liners Vegetable parchment or greaseproof papers are used in food and cooking applications. Machine finished, uncoated or size coated papers are used for some basic liner applications. They account for just under 15% of liners.
The specific combination
of paper or film plus silicone is the vital
element that gives to the release liner its
final characteristics. The choice depends
predominantly on the release liner end application.
Most common applicationsLabelstock is the largest application and covers the following end applications :• Primary labels for foodstuffs, beverages, cosmetics or other general consumer goods. • Price labels• Bar-code labels• Security labels – void, hologram• Smart labels – RFID, heat sensor labels
PSA Tapes • Double sided tapes for fixing and bonding• Flying splice in paper industry• Electronic applications• Automotive applications
Medical & Hygiene Silicone release coatings are vital for easy-to-use self-adhesive products for:• Closures for feminine hygiene products, baby diapers and incontinence inserts.• Sticking Plasters• ECG & EEG electrodes• Disposable surgical gowns
Graphic Arts & decorative labels rely on silicone release coatings with a specific performance:• Vehicle decoration• Advertising panels• Building decoration and protection
Industrial & other consumer goods silicone release liners offer gains in productivity and ease of use in many areas :• Interleaving applications• Roofing (bitumen)• Insulation tapes• Self-adhesive stamps• Envelopes• Composites
Food release & cooking papers offering a non-migratory non-stick surface, these papers have a growing role in industrial and household cooking applications. The very low toxicity and excellent biocompatibility of silicones means that they are fully compliant with all regulatory requirements for such applications :• Baking paper• Cooking trays• Food interleaving sheets

Silcolease® release coating systems are supplied in three basic forms : • in solvent dilution• as solventless silicone fluids• in water as dilutable emulsions
The choice of the appropriate carrier material is defined by coating equipment, substrate to be coated, regulatory and safety limitations and final end performance needs. The objective is to apply a uniform thin layer of liquid silicone onto the carrier substrate and transform, through a chemical reaction, the liquid into a cured surface coating. The polymerisation of the silicone is carried out either by a thermal curing mechanism or by UV light activation.

Elkem SiliconesSolventless Thermal Solutions
Silcolease® OPTIMASolventless Thermal range01
Our full spectrum of silicone release
solutions
Solventless Thermal systems are the most commonly used release systems and is the dominant technology in the label industry.Solventless Thermal technologies are based on polyaddition chemistry requiring a catalyst (generally platinum (Pt)) and thermal activation to cure the system. Curing is achieved by passing the silicone coated substrate through an oven to drive the reaction.
A major advantage of Solventless technology is that there are no diluting solvents, limiting health and safety hazards, and minimising any potential environmental risks. Furthermore, without the need to evaporate diluting solvents, they are more energy efficient when compared to the other thermal curing technologies.
Elkem Silicones Silcolease® OPTIMA range of products, through a more efficient curing mechanism, allows lower energy curing, increased productivity or economies of the expensive Pt metal catalysts.
The major features and benefits of Silcolease® OPTIMA Solventless Thermal Range are:• Lower energy costs• Environmentally friendly and safe solvent-free formulations• Excellent processing on machine at high processing speeds• Economical low platinum (Pt) formulations• Ease and flexibility of formulating for the broad range of applications• Excellent anchorage on a wide and varied range of substrates• Low viscosity and excellent wetting properties to give optimal coverage of the coated substrate
To choose Solventless Thermal silicone system that will give the ideal performance in your end application, the global technical service team of Elkem Silicones is always on hand to assist you.
Elkem Silicones Silcolease® systems are usually made of a minimum of 3 components but can go to as many as 5 or 6 components for certain applications. The major components are as follows: • Base Polymers• Crosslinkers• Catalysts• Release Control Additives• Mist Reduction Additives• Other Performance Additives

Elkem SiliconesSolventless Thermal Solutions
01. Base polymers (POLY) These give the basic silicone structure and through their intrinsic properties influence the overall release level, the profile of the release at varying stripping speeds, the compatibility with a wide range of substrates, the speed of curing, the anchorage level and the processing ease on machine.
The polymers are typically linear siloxanes with reactive groups based on alkenyl chemical groups (most commonly vinyl) which can be placed in various positions on the chain to give the performance properties required. The base polymer typically contains an inhibitor to ensure a long bath life after catalysis.
There is no one single perfect polymer that can meet all release coating need. Different polymers are available to achieve desired performance requirements depending on the specific technical need or end application.
03. Release Control Additives (RCA)These are blends of silicone polymers with three dimensional molecules known as “resins” which alter the structure and nature of the silicone composition.
RCA allows the release force to be tailored for a particular application. RCAs are present in many formulations for a wide range of end applications. The chosen RCA influences the cure speed, ease of use on machine, release performance against specific adhesive types, release stability with laminate or liner ageing and a number of other factors.
RCAs in the solventless thermal range, are all tight release additives which increase the release force from the level achieved with the base polymer alone.
In the graphs on the following pages, a value of 10 means that the component or system chosen gives the ultimate performance for the property illustrated.

04. Catalysts (CATA)Catalysts are metal-containing compounds that drive a chemical reaction between the various reactive groups found on the different components of the Elkem Silicones Silcolease® system. They are based on platinum (Pt) or tin (Tn) chemistries and are available in various concentration for ease of formulating. In general, the catalyst is a separate component to allow maximum formulation flexibility and optimisation of this extremely expensive raw material. Elkem Silicones Silcolease® OPTIMA products can be used to minimise the quantity of Pt used over a wide range of application and substrate.
Other performance additivesTypically other additives can be used in the system to adjust and optimise a number of properties such as:• Misting performance on coating machine at high coating speeds • Coefficient of friction of the final coating• Bath life• Anchorage• Back side transfer and printability• Bath viscosity

02. Crosslinkers (XL)The crosslinkers are responsible for the type of final cured network and have an influence on the end properties of the silicone coating. The hydride groupe (SiH) of the crosslinker react with the vinyl groups (Vi) on the base polymer in the presence of a catalyst. Elkem Silicones Silcolease® OPTIMA crosslinker range influences the speed of cure, silicone anchorage, aged stability of the coating and adhesive interaction potential.

The major advantage of emulsion technology is that it is very easy and safe to process. The nature of the emulsion systems and their ease of formulation with other organic components mean that they can be easily modified for various coating conditions.
Elkem Silicones can help to adapt and modify system formulations to all machine conditions. Emulsion silicones are a good option for coating open porous papers at reasonably low silicone coating weights. For in-line PET film coating, an emulsion silicone can be applied during the extrusion process in total safety and without major investment in sophisticated coating techniques.
Elkem Silicones has a long experience in the industry and the widest range of products for optimum performance while respecting the delicate balance between emulsion stability and high productivity.
Silcolease® Emulsion technology range offers unique benefits for certain applications and is the only choice for paper machine application of a silicone release coating. It is well adapted to all coating techniques such as size press (metered or traditional, film press), gravure or doctor blade type coating heads. Equally, simple coating techniques such as those used for solvent based silicones can be adapted for emulsion coating paying attention to wetting properties, solids levels and suitable thickening agents.

Elkem SiliconesSolventless UV Solutions
Our full spectrum of silicone release
solutions
Silcolease® SolventlessUV rangeUV Silicones is the only curing technology that offers the flexibility to coat film liners and other heat sensitive substrates unattainable with thermal cure systems.
Energy costs are low compared to thermal systems and space taken by installation is small, making UV an option for speciality users. UV systems are the natural choice for coating heat sensitive films which are, by nature, more easily recyclable and hence give a more environmentally friendly end liner product.
UV systems are the silicones of choice for:• Heat sensitive films• Narrow web applications with limited space for drying sections • Over coating of printed surfaces• Liner recycling• Linerless labels
The most sustainable silicone curing technologyThe photopolymerisation curing process of Silcolease® UV systems render them safe to use and a responsible choice.
Benefits for you include:• Use of solventless and water-based system to lower VOC emissions• Compact and simple machinery• Safe products : no odor and no toxicity• Low energy consumption• Reduction of total cost of operations
Why should you choose Silcolease® Solventless UV range? • Very fast cure• Very long bath life• Excellent anchorage on films• Low or no thermal input to substrate• Low substrate inhibition • Ready-to-use monocomponents

Elkem Silicones free radical system Silcolease® UV 100 series Based on acrylate functional silicone polymers with a free radical curing mechanism. The major advantage of these products is their excellent cure and anchorage behaviour on almost any substrate. This means that they can be used on a widerange of speciality films. Their robustness to cure onto printed surfaces makes them the ideal candidate for linerless label applications. One drawback with the free radical technology is that the reaction is inhibited by atmospheric oxygen. These systems must be processed under an inert atmosphere with nitrogen blanketing.
Elkem Silicones cationic system Silcolease® UV 200 series Based on epoxy functional silicone polymers with a cationic curing mechanism. The major advantage of these products is their excellent cure response to UV C radiation due to the incorporation of patented Iodonium Borate photoinitiator technology. A unique feature of Elkem Silicones Silcolease® UV 200 series is the possibility to supply a ready-to-use single component without additional bath formulation. A range of base polymers offers flexibility for coating head and substrate variations. The release control additives (RCAs) are used to modify the release towards premium or tight values.

Elkem SiliconesSolvent based Themal Solutions
Silcolease® Solvent basedThermal rangeElkem Silicones Silcolease® solvent-based range are based predominantly on polyaddition chemistry as used in thermal solventless systems.
High molecular weight silicones are diluted in volatile organic solvents. They offer the flexibility to coat filmic and many other substrates for speciality applications that are not possible with solventless or emulsion systems. Solvent systems have many technical advantages in such speciality applications for high clarity filmic liners, ultra-low release force liners and other specific niche markets.
Solvent based technology Solvent based systems offer advantages of excellent anchorage, smooth and even coverage at very low coatweights and very easy slow speed release. These properties make solvent based coatings hard to beat for premium product applications such as in the electronics industry and also for “clear on clear” or “no label look” labels.
