MASTER OF NURSING – 240 credits

PART ONE:

There are 4 compulsory papers listed in the MN Schedule and you can choose 2 elective papers OR if on the NP pathway, the Clinical project 168.861 (a 60 credit paper), or Leadership in Nursing 168.731 and an elective (both 30 credit papers).

ADVANCE YOUR NURSING PRACTICE Postgraduate nursing study is tailored to fit around your full-time professional commitments. Study part-time taking one 30 credit course per semester (about 20 hours study per week). Study is supported through online resources and block course classes held at one of our campuses in Auckland, Palmerston North, or Wellington.

WHAT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS WILL YOU NEED?

As a registered nurse you are eligible to study. If you have not studied for some time, the programme offers a short course Nurse Start preparing you to undertake further study. The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) can be undertaken as part of a Master of Nursing (MN) or as a stand alone qualification. The PGDip can include the necessary courses to prepare you for designated prescribing with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

A POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN NURSING2 courses (60 credits) Endorsements are available in Older Persons’ Health, Mental Health, and Primary Health Care.

A POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN NURSING 4 courses (120 credits) The PGDip can be courses of your choice but must include a research course or pathophysiology course, OR the 4 compulsory courses required for RN prescribing.

MASTER OF NURSING (MN) SCHEDULE

COMPULSORY COURSESThere are four compulsory courses in Part One of the MN: 168.733 Physiology and Pathophysiology 168.728 Assessment and Clinical Decision-Making 168.734 Clinical Pharmacology EITHER168.711 Health Research Design and Method OR168.713 Evidence Based Practice PLUS TWO ELECTIVE COURSES

In Part Two you will choose at least one 60 credit course from: 168.860 Prescribing for NP Practice168.861 Clinical Project168.890 Research Report

You need a minimum B grade average in Part One to progress to Part Two.

ELECTIVE COURSESIf undertaking a MN, 60 credits (two courses) should be chosen from the list of nursing programme courses or other postgraduate courses as approved by the Director of Postgraduate Nursing programmes: 168.724 Primary Health Care Nursing 168.703 Long Term Conditions168.750 RN Prescribing Practicum168.719 Clinical Specialty: Older Persons’ Health 168.714 Advanced Assessment and Therapeutic Intervention

in Mental Health 168.720 Clinical Specialty: Mental Health 168.709 Contemporary Clinical Teaching 168.717 Ethical Dilemmas and Decisions in Professional

Practice 168.731 Leadership in Nursing 168.722 Wound Management 168.712 Pain Management 168.721 Mäori centred practice

You can also enrol in a special topic course of 15 credits or 30 credits. Other postgraduate elective courses may be chosen, for example, from the School of Public Health, the School of Management, or the Sleep/Wake Research Centre. Your plans must be approved by the Director of Postgraduate Nursing programmes.

A MASTER OF NURSING 7 courses (total of 240 credits) The Master of Nursing will prepare you with advanced speciality knowledge within broad fields of practice. The Nurse Practitioner pathway meets the education requirements for registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

A PhD IN NURSINGPhD (Nursing) is a programme for Registered Nurses who already hold a master’s degree with a research component or equivalent, and who meet the grade point average (GPA) entry criteria.
