Making that move to college is a big step for anyone. This guide hopes to make it a little easier for you.

It takes you through everything from Choosing Your Course and Enrolment to how you can travel to college and the kind of financial help that is available for those students who most need it.

Details about enrichment and our sports development centres are also included because you will need to be aware of these activities early in your first term at college.

For those of you already thinking about life beyond Priestley we’ve included some details about how we will help you progress to your chosen university, apprenticeship or job. However, there’s plenty of time to think about that and we will support you all the way.

We look forward to welcoming you to Priestley.

There are some useful contacts on page 27 so if you need any help or support before, or during, your time at college you know who to call.

choosingyourcourse 03

Many subjects and courses at Priestley have specific GCSE requirements for entry and some a set average GCSE points score. You can find the specific requirements in each course entry in our prospectus in the section “What you will need to take this course.” We use the ALPS method to work out your average GCSE score. Here is how to do it for 2019 entry.

A-LEVELS / LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL OPTIONS

To take a Level 3 programme at Priestley you will need to have at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or equivalent. Your overall programme will be determined by your average GCSE points score.

At Priestley you will take AS exams at the end of Year 1 for which you will receive an AS qualification. In Year 2 most students will continue with three A-Levels or equivalent.

To take A-Levels at Priestley you should have an average GCSE points score of 5 or above and have a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English Language or English Literature.

• Anyone with an average GCSE points score of 6 or above will be advised to study one of our aspirational enrichment programmes

• Some subjects require a higher average GCSE points score

• EPQ and Core Maths are excellent courses to keep your options open

• Vocational Level 2 qualifications passed pre-16 can replace one or two of our five GCSE entry requirements for Level 3

< GO PRIESTLEY >

GCSE average of 7 or better = option of taking four or five AS/A-Levels or equivalent

GCSE average of less than 5= option of taking Level 3 vocational qualifications

GCSE average of 6 to 6.9 = option of taking four AS/A-Levels or equivalent

GCSE average of 5 to 5.9 = option of taking three A-Levels or equivalent with an extended enrichment

LEVEL 2 VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

If you have fewer than five GCSEs at Grade 4 you will need an average GCSE score of at least 3 to take one of our Level 2 vocational programmes.

< GO PRIESTLEY >

GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND MATHS

If you do not have a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English Language and/or Maths you will have to continue studying English and/or Maths at Priestley until you obtain a Grade 4 or equivalent.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR AVERAGE GCSE SCORE

The way we calculate your average GCSE points score is based on the national ALPS method which is a robust method used by many post 16 providers. Here’s how to do it:

If you have passed vocational Level 2 programmes pre-16 you will normally need to have also passed at least three GCSEs at score 4 or above.

1) Score your GCSEs as below 2) Add them together 3) Divide by the number of GCSEs you have taken

GCSE RESULT SCORE

87.776.35.75431

=========

Note: a slightly different version of the ALPS scoring system will be used to set your targets.

YOUR TIMETABLE

Your timetable is made up of a series of blocks and at Level 3 your timetable will be made up of at least four blocks. The maximum is six.

One AS/A-Level = one blockVocational Certificate = one block Vocational Diploma = two blocks Vocational Extended Diploma = three blocks GCSE = one block Extended Project / Core Maths = half of one block Extended Enrichment (eg Pre-Med / Duke of Edinburgh) = half of one block Sport Centre of Excellence = half of one block

All students are in a Tutor Group that also takes up half of one block Your timetable could look something like the following two examples depending on whether you take an A-Level or Vocational programme.

STILL UNSURE?Need to discuss your options before enrolment? Drop in to our Choices Event on Tuesday 27 August between 1 and 3pm where teachers and our Guidance Team will be on hand to offer support.

YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR MINDThroughout our enrolment period and prior to the start of term you can discuss changing your choices with us. Once term has started you will normally only be able to change a course after the first two weeks.

MAKE INFORMED CHOICES

Informed Choices is aimed at pupils aged 14 and upwards who are considering university and want information to help them choose the right subjects to study at sixth form or college.

The guidance is written by admissions directors from the 24 Russell Group universities and provides information on why subject choice matters.Remember, this is general guidance only.

For detailed and up-to-date information you will need to contact individual universities or look up courses on the UCAS website.

www.informedchoices.ac.uk

PLEASE CHECKSome courses have additional requirements so please check the profiles at the back of your prospectus. Performing Arts courses require you to pass an audition.

Page 8: YOUR ONE-STOP GUIDE TO MAKING A BRIGHT START AT … · Preparing For Priestley Page 09 - 11 Routes To Success Page 12 - 14 Bursaries Page 15 - 17 Sport Development Centres Page 18

• Bring written evidence of your qualifications –

either exam slips or school certificates – to your appointment. You cannot be offered a place without them.

• At Enrolment discuss your options and the

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY

QUALITY STUDY

Make sure you plan for homework including where and when you will complete it. If at any point you have trouble completing your work speak to your Personal / Progress Tutor or our Study Support Team in the LRC who can help with study skills, organisation and revision techniques.

Our Study Support Team will also help and support you if you have a learning difficulty / disability or a health problem that may affect your progress.

The LRC opens at 8am and has silent study areas and lots of computers as well as a library. It hosts EXOP which is run by the Study Support Team from 4-6pm Monday to Thursday in term time. This is the opportunity to complete assignments before going home.

PART-TIME WORK AND COLLEGE

Some students have part-time work, but college must be your priority. We recommend no more than 10 hours work a week.

Full-time students must be available at any time during college days even if not timetabled. Level 3 AS/A-Level and vocational students should complete around 12 hours study outside of class a week.

< GO PRIESTLEY >

Speak to your Personal / Progress Tutor if you have any major financial concerns as there may be help available through the Bursary Funds.

EXPECTATIONS

At Priestley you will be treated like an adult and with greater independence than at school. We do, however, have certain expectations about your behaviour and approach to your studies.

In exceptional cases we can arrange for work to be sent home. No holidays should be taken in term time. In exceptional circumstances this must be authorised by your Senior Tutor by completing a holiday request form.

ATTENDANCE IS KEY.. If your attendance falls below our required standard your place at college will be at risk and we reserve the right to charge you for all examination and registration fees incurred.

To report an unavoidable absence inform your personal tutor, call 01925 624450 or email [email protected]

CHECK EXAM DATES.. Ensure they do not clash with other commitments.

BE PUNCTUAL.. We expect you to be on time for all of your classes. Persistent lateness disrupts teaching and prevents effective learning. Frequent lateness may put your place in college at risk.

SHOW RESPECT.. Respect should be shown to staff, visitors, fellow students and the campus itself.

UNIFROG Unifrog is an award-winning online platform which helps students to make intelligent choices about their future, while allowing tutors to track their progress.

Students will be able to use Unifrog for both apprenticeship and university searches and the platform can be used in conjunction with the UCAS website. We will coach you in how to use Unifrog as a diary of your experiences, skills and activities.

VISITING SPEAKERS / UNIVERSITIES High-profile, quality speakers visit college throughout the year to give lectures that enhance students’ experience and knowledge. Some are subject focussed while others offer general advice and guidance about securing university places.

WORK EXPERIENCE Over the years Priestley has forged strong links with industry and local companies to provide students with work experience opportunities that can often lead to full-time jobs. Students will be made aware of these and it will always be worth popping in to Student Services for support from our dedicated careers advisors.

Former students are among those who return to share their experiences with the current cohort and Priestley will organise trips to universities as well as the UCAS conference.

You will be notified about these events as they are organised through the year.

There are many ways Priestley will help you progress during your time at college and beyond. Here are just a few..
