why?In a high user density environment, adding new AP doesn’t improve performance

Even with one AP in each classroom, students struggled with slow download speeds

You’ve invested innew technology but you haven’t seen the performance or improvement you expected.Have you ever

experienced? In an office environment, you’ve come to expect that video conferences will often be interrupted

Do you worry about having to provide

wireless at a conference for

hundreds of users?

29

To achieve faster speeds, greater channel widths are needed this in tern means less channels to use.

We are then faced with Co-Channel interference.

So what's

the issue?

Page 30: Your Networking Ally - Exclusive Networks...Standard responds on 5GHz only for a number of attempts before allowing the client to connect on 2.4GHz Force will only respond on 5GHz

30

Co-channel interference occurs between two access

points (APs) that are on the same frequency channel. The

reason why this should be considered when deploying Wi-

Fi is that co-channel interference can severely affect the

performance of your wireless LAN (WLAN) so much so that

the effects can make the service unusable.

What is Co-Channel

Interference (CCI)?

CCI is like two lanes merging on a motorway without knowing it's going to merge!

Page 31: Your Networking Ally - Exclusive Networks...Standard responds on 5GHz only for a number of attempts before allowing the client to connect on 2.4GHz Force will only respond on 5GHz

31

Traditional methods of dealing with Co-Channel Interference (CCI)

Coverage Area

Interference AreaCCI

Traditional methods of

dealing with Co-Channel

Interference (CCI) issues,

is to turn down the power.

Unfortunately, this causes

dead spots due to less

coverage area and no

overlap, along with giving

lower throughputs.

Also it doesn’t completely

remove the Co-Channel

Interference (CCI) issues.

Turn Down the

Power?

Smart Antenna – Goals

Increase the signal gain allowing

increased coverage.

Increase

Coverage

By shaping the pattern away from Interference

“Interference rejection” we are able reduce

Interference.

Reduce

Interference

Power efficiency in the smart antenna

means we are able to reduce the power

consumption needed.

In the co-channel interference test Zyxel

Smart Antenna reports the best aggregate

throughput in seven deployments over the

eight considered: it also achieves an

average gain of 70% with respect to the AP

with the lowest aggregate throughput

(Aruba).

.

Better in co-channel

environments

Zyxel’s Smart Antenna achieves an average gain

of 56% better coverage by delivering more

throughput than non-smart antenna when

compared with the Cisco Access Points in 5GHz.

The Zyxel Smart Antenna also has a average gain

of 66% over Ruckus in the 2.4GHz band.

In the co-channel Interference test Zyxel

Smart Antenna shows an average gain of

45% on total aggregated throughput against

the competing smart Antenna Access Point

Client (stations) Interaction with Wi-Fi

Which Band to select

(2.4GHz / 5GHz)

When to roam from one AP to another and

is traditionally at the discretion of the station

This is normally based on strongest

signal and as 2.4GHz generally is

stronger than 5GHz then is

selected even though it may not

be more reliable.

Most devices will not actively seek for a better connection and will wait

until the signal is at the max tolerance e.g. 90dBm (unstable by most

devices).

This is often referred to as “sticky AP” even though its generally the Station

sticking to the AP.

Object AP ProfileConfig. Radio Select Profile.

Set a minimum client signal strength. A wireless client is allowed to

connect to the AP only when its signal strength is stronger than the

specified threshold.

-20 dBm is the strongest signal

-76 dBm is the weakest signal

Set a minimum signal strength to disconnect a station. When a wireless

client’s signal strength is lower than the specified threshold, the AP

disconnects the wireless client (station).

-20 dBm is the strongest signal

-90 dBm is the weakest signal

VoIP over wireless requires lower tolerances than other types of traffic like browsing the internet and it’s

recommended that the stations connectivity is kept between -60dBm / -65dBm to avoid call quality issues.
