CASE STUDY

The solutionNoise management in real-time

The Vodafone solution sees Sonitus Systems embed Vodafone IoT connectivity into the EM2030 sensor. A Vodafone USB modem then connects to the company’s cloud-based software systems. The solution delivers the required control, global reach and transparent pricing.

“Vodafone was the only company that could ship anywhere in the world,” adds McDonald. “Plus, the Vodafone equipment is already certified in every market in which we operate.”

Customers simply switch on the sensor to start monitoring; all readings are then automatically uploaded to a cloud-based reporting system.

“We wanted the solution to be as seamless as possible – regardless of location. We test every device in Dublin at our HQ and then ship worldwide. Customers can simply plug-and-play,” continues McDonald. “The device then provides real-time information on noise levels to our online management portal.”

Sonitus Systems fights noise pollution with real-time sensors and Vodafone IoT

By embedding Vodafone IoT connectivity and USB modems into its sensors, Sonitus Systems enables city planners, manufacturers, designers and employers to detect when noise levels are approaching dangerous levels. The solution promises to create a more harmonious environment for everyone.

The challengeControlling harmful noise

High noise levels are bad for our health. Regular exposure to elevated sound has been proven to impact sleep patterns, heart rhythms, and blood pressure. It can even cause birth defects.

The monitoring and management of noise is an issue for manufacturers, urban planners, product designers, and employers. Noise control is now a feature of modern life.

Sonitus Systems is an Irish company providing noise monitoring solutions. Its EM2030 Sound Level Monitor delivers a constant stream of data that enables customers to manage noise levels, whether that is on a construction site, at a concert or by the roadside. Key to this solution is consistent connectivity – the monitor must always be connected to transmit meaningful data in real-time.

Finding the right connectivity partner proved to be difficult, particularly when the company began expanding overseas. It wanted to find a single mobile operator with the global reach and local presence required.

“Previously, we had lots of individual third party in-country contracts, which meant we had to tweak our solution every time we entered a new market. It was costly and complicated,” explains Paul McDonald, CEO, Sonitus Systems. “We started looking for operators that could provide consistent worldwide pricing across their own network. It was important that the backbone infrastructure was owned by the provider rather than the MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) approach.”

The portal enables Sonitus Systems to activate or deactivate units as required, and even upgrade them remotely to a different data plan. In addition, new data streams, including air quality monitoring, can be added in the future.

A customer-facing online analysis and reporting system allows users to check noise levels around the clock and create automatic notifications if these levels are expected to exceed legal limits. Current customers include event organisers, builders, demolition specialists, city councils and infrastructure managers. From its Irish base, Sonitus Systems now operates across Europe and the USA, and has recently launched a project in Chile.

“We now have 1300 installations across 1100 active projects in ten countries and are continuing to grow,” says McDonald. “Our customers are delighted with this simple, cost-effective way to meet regulatory noise obligations.”
