AAUP informational meeting to be held October 9, 5pm in Hamilton569Join your UNC faculty colleagues for a meeting to discuss the possible advantages of having an activeAmerican Association of University Professors chapter on campus. AAUP representatives will be on handto answer questions, provide relevant background information, and discuss the mission and activities ofthe AAUP.

The AAUP, founded in 1915, enshrined the principles of academic freedom and shared governance in theprofessional lives of college and university faculty; the organization has remained the most visible andstaunch defender of these cherished principles for more than a century.

• With over thirty active state conferences and a dedicated professional staff in Washington D. C., theAAUP offers a large network of experienced faculty advocates --and in some cases, legal assistance--toindividual faculty facing difficult tenure and promotion cases or censorship of their research or teaching.• The AAUP regularly challenges institutions that "violate norms of academic freedom, tenure, and sharedgovernance" (AAUP mission statement)• An AAUP chapter can work with existing structures of faculty governance to perform some of thefunctions of a faculty union. (Its sister organization AAUP-CBC bargains on behalf of faculty in stateswhere public employee unionization is permitted.)
