The purpose of this leaflet is to explain what happens next and why.Your consultant may suspect that you have a gynaecological tumour which may be malignant (cancer). A second opinion will be sought from a team of specialists in Sheffield. Any appointment to see one of them is likely to be at the Jessop Wing at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. Usually the team have already been contacted by your Consultant in Rotherham, to ensure that you are seen at the earliest opportunity.

Details of any relevant scans and tests that you have had, will be sent to them. This will allow them to formally discuss all aspects of your particular case in a Multi -Disciplinary Team meeting. This is an important meeting where an appropriate treatment plan is designed specifically for you.

SupportThe process of visiting a second, unfamiliar hospital (and the apparent delay in treatment) can be frightening. For this reason, you will be assigned a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to act as your ‘key worker’.

Additional support can be provided by the two CNS also based at the Jessop Wing. You can ask to see them at anytime, if you have any concerns. They act as your temporary key worker whilst you are receiving care at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital or attending the Jessop Wing.

The CNS all work together to ensure you get the best support at the right time. Their contact details can be found at the end of this leaflet.

Your Key WorkerHer role is to provide information and support to you and your family during this anxious time. She will act as a consistent local link between you and the doctors. She will be present, where ever possible, when you are told about your referral for a second opinion. She will also keep in touch with you throughout your treatment.

You will be given her contact details and if necessary your local CNS can visit you at home.

You will be offered a written record of your consultation should you want one. The CNS can provide you with specific information about your suspected disease, possible treatments and symptom relief. Advice can also be given about where to get financial help and she can organise assistance at home should you need it. Please do not hesitate to ask for help.

Your AppointmentYou will receive written confirmation of your appointment from Sheffield, but you may have advanced knowledge from your referring consultant or the CNS in Rotherham. Maps showing you how to get to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital can be found at the end of this leaflet.

Please let someone know if you have transport difficulties as soon as possible. At least 2 days notice is required for the hospital to arrange suitable transport for you. Please note transport to include one friend or relative can only be provided for the first appointment.

The Multi Disciplinary Team MeetingMulti Disciplinary Team meetings (MDTs) take place weekly between Cancer Centre (Sheffield) and Rotherham. The meetings are organised specifically to formally discuss each case individually where cancer is known or suspected.

The members of the team specialise in the treatment of gynaecological cancer by surgery, drugs (chemotherapy) or radiation. Also present are experts in the study and examination of diseased tissue (Histopathologists), as well as experts who are able to interpret x-rays and scans (Radiologists). Clinical Nurse Specialists are also part of the team.

At Your Clinic AppointmentYou may see either a surgeon or a clinical oncologist (a specialist in non surgical treatment of cancer).

It may be useful to write down and bring with you, any questions you may have, a list of your current medication and important dates in your medical history.

You may find it helpful to bring someone with you to support you. There may be lots of important information to take in, and this may be overwhelming, so a second pair of ears can be very useful.

If surgery is indicated you may be given a date for your operation. However, before proceeding with surgery you may need some additional investigations including an appointment to see the anaesthetist.

Specific information will be given to you about the operation itself, including the risks and benefits at this time.

Sometimes a definite diagnosis cannot be made until after surgery has taken place.
