ENHANCE Healthy Cooking Workshop Series This popular series featuring Joya Parenteau, registered dietitian and chef, focuses on recipes for healthy, hip Santa Monica adults 50+. Workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, January 10th and Tuesday, February 14th, beginning promptly at 10:30am. Please sign-up in ad-vance at the Senior Center office. Self-Healing with Maria Locsin, L.Ac. Learn how to stay healthy, ease pain and discomfort, and increase blood flow by pressing specific body points and having a healthy diet. Caregivers are also welcome. Workshops will be Wednesday, January 18th at 12:30pm. There will be no workshop in February Please sign-up in advance at the Senior Center office.
Zumba Gold Join the Senior Center Zumba Party with Rita Ashton! Zumba Gold is a safe and effective total body workout with Latin and International mu-sic. It’s simple, with easy to follow dance steps. First-timers are al-ways welcome. Classes are Thursdays at 1:30pm.

Nutrition Advisory Council meetings give older adults the opportunity to provide feedback on the Los Angeles County grant-funded Senior Nutri-tion Program (also known as WISE & Healthy Aging Healthy Lunches). Commission for the Senior Community
The City of Santa Monica Commission for the Senior Community is an all-volunteer Commission appointed by City Council that focuses on the quality of life for adults 50+ in the city. The Commission makes recom-mendations to City Council on a wide range of issues relevant to older adults in Santa Monica and provides educational opportunities to sen-iors, their families and caregivers.
The Commission meets monthly on the third Wednesday from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 4th St. The public is invit-ed to attend. Volunteering is a great way to keep your skills sharp, continue to grow and be involved in the community. Make a difference in the quality of life of those you serve while enriching your own life through service to others. WISE & Healthy Aging represents more than 40 agencies with a wide variety of volunteer oppor-tunities. The following are just some of the volunteer positions available: Peer Peer Peer Peer Counseling: Counseling: Counseling: Counseling: Provide individual counseling and facilitate weekly support groups. WISE Connections: WISE Connections: WISE Connections: WISE Connections: A membership program to help older adults remain in their homes. Volunteer opportunities span a wide range, from food shopping, pet care, gardening, or handyman to helping in the WISE Connections offices. are eligible for, and provide assistance in completing applications for public benefit programs. If you are 60 or over, join the Healthy Lunches Program for a great tasting, nutritious
lunch each weekday.
Lunch is served at 12 noon, weekdays. Each location is open from at least 10:30am to
1:30pm, allowing time to meet your friends before lunch and socialize afterwards. Reg-
ularly scheduled, monthly visits to each site are made by WISE & Healthy Aging Care
Managers, who are specifically trained to provide support to linking services in the sur-
rounding community

Home Delivered Meals
Meals on Wheels West provides healthy meals
and daily visits 7 days a week for those who are
homebound. If you or someone you know is expe-
riencing short-term or permanent illness or disa-
bility and can’t shop or cook for themselves,
please call (310) 394-5133 between 9:00am and
1:00pm to make arrangements.
Reservations are Required: If you are 60 or over, and you are registered with the
Healthy Lunches Program, you will need to reserve
your meal one day in advance and then arrive at the
selected location by 11:45am. To reserve your meal,
you must visit or call your selected site one day in ad-
vance between 10:00am and 11:45am. You must
speak to someone to ensure your reservation—
messages will not be accepted.
We ask that those individuals who reserve a meal
and can’t make it, call to cancel. If you do not, your
future reservation may be denied. This policy must be
strictly enforced as the program incurs the cost for all
meals ordered. The suggested donation for any re-

On Saturdays a box lunch is offered at the Senior
Center at 1450 Ocean Avenue. Lunches will be
provided on a first-come-first-served basis on Sat-
urdays only for enrolled Healthy Lunches Program
participants from 11:00am until 12:30pm. The
suggested donation is $2.50.

place for adults age 50-plus in Santa Monica and the Westside. WISE Connections is a trusted source for refer-
rals, discounted services, convenience services, transportation services and for social and cultural opportunities.
A membership can open up interesting new experiences and friendships for older adults who may be looking to
broaden their social horizons. WISE Connections also has links to other resources often needed, such as free
lectures, financial planners, notary service, counseling and more. It offers help with seasonal needs like clean-

transportation purpose. Rides outside of Santa Monica are provided for medical purposes to specific facilities
including UCLA Medical Center, West LA VA Hospital and Kaiser West LA. Shopping trips and other destinations
outside of Santa Monica are also available. Door Through Door Door Through Door Door Through Door Door Through Door service, for those who need help from their door to
the van due to mobility issues, or for special medical procedures that require an attendant, is also available. After-
hours services are now being provided for City-sponsored meetings and events. Advance registration is required
for all trips. Door Through Door service and trips to destinations outside of Santa Monica are available only on a

Citywide Reads 2012Citywide Reads 2012Citywide Reads 2012Citywide Reads 2012 The year 2012 marks Santa Monica Public Library's tenth annual Citywide Reads, a community reading pro-gram that encourages people throughout Santa Monica to read and discuss the same book. This year’s book is Raymond Chandler’s The Lady in the Lake, which is partially set in Santa Monica (“Bay City”). There will be several discussions of the book, including one on Mon-day, March 12th at 1:30 pm at the Ken Edwards Cen-ter, 1527 Fourth Street, Santa Monica.
Saturdays with LA Opera Series: Multimedia Saturdays with LA Opera Series: Multimedia Saturdays with LA Opera Series: Multimedia Saturdays with LA Opera Series: Multimedia Talks and a ConcertTalks and a ConcertTalks and a ConcertTalks and a Concert Presenters from the LA Opera Speakers Bureau give informative, multimedia presentations about upcoming operas. All programs begin at 3:00 pm and are held in the Main Library’s Multipurpose Room. The series will feature Simon Boccanegra on Saturday, January 21st and Albert Herring on Saturday, February 18th. The Montana Avenue branch library will be temporarily closed from Monday, January 16th — Friday, February 24th for carpeting, painting and interior improvements.
