WHAT IS A SMILE MAKEOVER?

As the name suggests, a smile makeover is a full reconstruction of your smile. Using multiple dental procedures available, your

smile can be restored in both health and aesthetics. Depending on the current state of your teeth, there are a number of different

procedures available that can reshape and rejuvenate a smile.

Many people undergo smile makeovers. Often, people will choose to have a smile makeover as they were not able to afford

treatment or did not have access to sufficient treatment when they were younger. Some may wish to have a smile makeover as the

current state of their teeth makes it difficult to do things like chew their food or speak properly. Also, they may not find their teeth

aesthetically pleasing and wish to improve their smile in this way. Using a combination of restorative and cosmetic treatments, a

brighter and improved smile can be achieved.

TERMINAL VS. NON-TERMINAL TEETH

There are often two types of teeth we encounter for smile makeovers. Patients ordinarily will have either terminal or non-terminal

teeth. Terminal teeth are those teeth that cannot be saved. Often due to gum disease or decay, teeth can get to a point where their

roots are not salvageable. In these circumstances, dental implants or dentures are recommended to replace the teeth and restore

the health of the mouth.

Non-terminal teeth, on the other hand, are those teeth that can be saved. Though damaged or broken, the roots of these teeth are

still strong enough that the teeth can be restored. For non-terminal teeth, there are a variety of options that can be used to restore

the smile. A combination of procedures that can strengthen the teeth, such as porcelain crowns, implants, and bridges, can be used.

In addition, cosmetic solutions such as veneers can also be utilised to improve the overall appearance of the teeth.

TERMINAL SOLUTIONS

FULL ARCH RESTORATIONS

This is a dental solution available to those who wish to replace all of their teeth. There are three types of full arch restorations

available: A fixed bridge restoration, a removable overdenture, and a removable full denture.

FIXED BRIDGE RESTORATION

A fixed bridge is one of the most popular restoration choices, as it is permanent and will feel and function the same as your natural

teeth. Fixed bridge restorations use a combination of dental implants and a dental bridge to restore your smile. A dental bridge

is designed to fill in a gap left by a missing tooth or a group of teeth by attaching to an existing or installed solid tooth structure in

the mouth.

For any treatment to commence, you will first be required to talk with one of our friendly staff for a consultation so that we can

determine best the approach for your personalised treatment. During the consultation, we can suggest how many implants will

be needed for your treatment, along with the shape and size of your prosthetic teeth. After a thorough clean, we can install your

implants, which will act at the new tooth roots. We usually attach four or five implants per arch, and while your jawbone is integrating

with the implants, we will secure crowns so that the aesthetic of your smile is returned immediately. The end result is that your smile

is fully restored and your fixed dentures will appear just like a natural smile would.

DENTURES

For those looking to replace their teeth, a common solution is dentures. There are two types of dentures available, a removable

overdenture (partial), or removable full denture. Dentures are a removable prosthetic that requires looking after in order to sustain

longevity. Dentures involve the creation of a mould of your mouth, along with a design of your prosthetic teeth. For some, the

option of partial dentures is available. Partial dentures involve prosthetic teeth connected to a strip that can be placed within the

mouth and resembles a common dental bridge.

NON-TERMINAL SOLUTIONS

CROWNS/BRIDGES

Dental crowns and bridges are common dental procedures that can strengthen and replace broken or missing teeth. When

undergoing a smile makeover, crowns and bridges can be used to replace or repair any damaged or diseased teeth. Dental

crowns, or caps, are porcelain prosthetics that cover a damaged tooth. In the past, crowns were often made out of metals such as

gold or amalgam. Nowadays, porcelain is the preferred choice as it is much healthier, and blends in with the rest of the mouth.

Dental crowns are implemented by first preparing the tooth to be capped. After this, a specially designed crown is placed which is

matched to your bite and colour of surrounding teeth.

Placing bridges is a similar process to placing crowns. Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They work by using

the teeth either side of the gap as an anchor which supports the prosthetic bridge.

IMPLANTS

Dental implants are used to replace missing or badly damaged teeth. The process for implants involved inserting the implant

into the site of the missing tooth. This is then left to heal and bond with the surrounding bone and gum, a process called

osseointegration. After this, an abutment is attached to the implant, and once this has healed, the prosthetic is placed.

INLAYS/ONLAYS

Inlays and onlays are reconstructive procedures used to repair broken or damaged teeth.

Often, they are used for teeth that are healthy enough not to require a crown, but decayed or

damaged enough to not be suitable for a filling. They are the prosthetic part of a tooth. Inlays

are the smaller of the two and are used for larger cavities. For more extensive damage, an

onlay is used.

VENEERS

Porcelain veneers are thin, yet strong, shells that are placed over an entire tooth to improve

its appearance. They are handcrafted by our in-house ceramists and are designed to suit the

rest of your mouth. Veneers can be used to cover cracked, chipped, stained, or crooked teeth.

TEETH WHITENING

For the final stage of a smile makeover, you may want to whiten your teeth. At

Kilmore Dental & Specialist Centre, we provide teeth whitening treatments

using dentist-prescribed take-home bleaching trays. It involves a non-invasive

technique that applies peroxide gel onto the teeth using custom made trays.

The gel formulation is stronger and works faster than the maximum 6%

peroxide solution found in available over-the-counter products.

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD PATIENTS

For some patients, the state of their teeth may fall somewhere between terminal and non-terminal. This can be discovered in your

first assessment by your dentist. For those who fall in this middle ground, they get the decision between terminal or non-terminal

treatment. Your dentist can help you make an informed decision on whether you would like a fresh slate with a treatment such as a

full bridge restoration, or if you would like to save the teeth you have with reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.
