We all went to school (once), and what did or didn’t work for us often colours our perceptions of what effective schooling looks like. For example, parents often judge a school based on the amount of homework or study assigned. But what is the difference between them, and do our children benefit from learning at home?

In general, homework is work structured by the teacher whilst study is when a student structures their own revision. As parents, we all want the best for our children. Homework or study time can be a great opportunity to get a glimpse into our children’s lives, but it can also become a battleground.

Over recent years there has been countless research studies on the impact of homework and study on students. So, what do we know and what is still just conjecture?

Here is a quick quiz about homework and study in primary school. Seven of the statements below have strong research evidence and seven of the statements do not. Can you tell the difference?

1. Homework can help children develop good work ethic and study habits.2. Homework improves parent-child and home-school interaction.3. Regular homework skill practice improves children’s academic performance in English and mathematics.4. Establishing a habit of regular reading improves language outcomes. 5. Homework can help children develop organisational and time management skills.6. Learning times tables improves mathematics performance.7. Homework can cause stress and anxiety for children and family conflict.8. Supportive, involved parenting improves student learning.9. Homework in my child’s preferred learning style will help them learn better.10. Mindfulness exercises can help my

child learn better.11. Memorising sight words with unusual spellings improves English outcomes.12. Homework develops personal competencies like resilience and self-discipline.13. Regular revision of work studied earlier improves learning outcomes. 14. Strict parental surveillance of homework improves student learning.

How did you go?

The statements that are true, with proof are: 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13.

Whilst homework does have learning benefits in secondary school, in primary school the benefits of certain types of homework can be limited. More homework doesn’t improve academic performance, but the right type of homework can. The most effective homework is: small amounts, linked to the learning of the day and with feedback provided the following day. Regular reading and revision of prior learning (study) can be beneficial.

Our approach as parents also makes a difference. If we are positive, involved and encouraging, our children benefit, but if we have a surveillance approach to homework, our children may suffer.

The best way that we can support the learning of our children is to get them to talk to us about their learning, since this encourages memory encoding. Rather than forcing them to fill in yet another worksheet, take them outside to the park, ask them what they learnt, prompt them to make connections or identify patterns between what they learnt this week, last week or last year and just enjoy spending time together.

At CD Lawyers, we specialise in Family Law matters but also have years of knowledge in practice areas ranging from criminal law to estates planning and litigation.

Passing away without a Will can place a significant burden on your family. It can impose onerous legal fees on your loved ones and may result in your assets being distributed by the Court. By having your Will drafted by us, we can assist you to have your assets divided in accordance with your wishes upon your passing. You can also nominate the person you wish to act as your executor to look after your Estate when you pass.

It is important to seek professional assistance when writing a Will. Our lawyers will write your Will in accordance with your instructions and provide practical advice that will help prevent any complications after your passing. This reduces the likelihood of disputes regarding interpretation between trustees, beneficiaries and other parties.

A Will properly drafted by a lawyer is the best way to have your assets dealt with as you wish after your passing – but how do you manage your affairs in the event that you lose capacity to make decisions while still alive?

Enduring Power of Attorney (“Attorney”) and Enduring Power of Guardianship (“Guardian”) documents allow you to appoint a trusted person to make decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to do so. An Attorney is eligible to make property and financial decisions on your behalf. A Guardian has authority to make personal, lifestyle and treatment decisions for you.

Attorney and Guardian documents must be in a specified format in order to be legally

enforceable. It is important that you keep the original Attorney and Guardian documents and consider giving copies to your appointed attorneys/guardians and your lawyer. It is also recommended that you provide your GP and relevant health professionals copies, due to the nature of the documents. All copies, especially the original, will need to be kept in a safe place where they will not be lost, damaged or destroyed.

Attorneys and Guardians can assist your family in making life a little bit easier at a difficult time for all. It is important that you have these documents completed in order to be prepared for situations in which you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself.

Our office can prepare Attorney and Guardian documents for you, and write your Will for a fixed fee arrangement. This can be further reduced if we draft the documents together. We also offer discounts for people that hold a pension card.

Contact our office on (08) 9408 5212 for more information.

Winter seems a long way away in Perth at the moment, but the cooler mornings are a tell-tale sign that it is on its way.

With things slowing down in growth, it’s a great time to stand back and have a look at what needs attention. If there are any areas that you would like to improve now is the time to start planning them. While the weather is still pleasant, many of these can be done now to have them ready for spring.

MULCHINGMulching is a must. A good coverage of a minimum of 75mm, with an ideal of 100mm recommended to do the job properly, will slow down those weeds and keep the roots of the plants that little bit warmer. Keep an eye on the weeds over winter and pull them out as you see them pop up as it really helps keeping the spread of them down before they flower and drop more seeds.

CITRUSCitrus need feeding this time of the year as they are growing and producing fruit. A good citrus food will give them the boost they need.

DECIDUOUSDeciduous plants can be pruned into shape this time of year after all the leaves have dropped.

LIMESTONEWinter is also a great time of year to have a look at your hardscaping. Those sandy areas in summer can become muddy in wet weather. Limestone paving is a great solution. It is also the coolest product under foot in summer too.

Limestone raised garden beds are great to plant in as they make a back aching job into a pleasurable one. Finish them off with bullnose capping and they become a real feature in your garden.

Yanchep Garden Centre have everything for your soft and hardscaping needs including plants, fertilisers, mulches, soils, sands, pots, limestone pavers, bullnose, cobblestone, artificial turf and so much more. Crystal and Michela are always on hand to help you with any advice. We have a large tradesman network, if you need a quote on any landscaping work.

We look forward to meeting you soon,

Edwards continued his career in the post-war RAF, and was granted the substantive rank of squadron leader from September 1945 then as a staff officer at Air Headquarters, Malaya, from November 1945 until February 1946, he served with the Netherlands East Indies Forces for a short period before returning to Malaya as air adviser to the General Officer Commanding. In September 1945, he was posted as station commander at the RAF Base in Kuala Lumpur, remaining there until May 1947 and was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services in south-east Asia.Returning to Britain in June 1947, he undertook a six-month course at the Staff College, before receiving a two-year posting as senior personnel staff officer of No. 21 Group, Flying Training Command. Promoted to wing commander in July 1947, his next posting was as the senior instructor on the leadership course at Digby, Lincolnshire. Subsequently, he was appointed station commander at Wattisham, Suffolk. He was promoted to group captain in January 1954. Edwards was the Station Commander of the RAF base RAF Habbaniya in Iraq during the Suez Crisis of 1956, and also the critical time of the Iraqi Revolution of July 1958. He returned to Britain in October 1958 to command the Central Fighter Establishment, West Raynham, with the acting rank of air commodore.Awarded a Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 1959 New Year Honours, he was promoted to the substantive rank of air commodore in July 1959, and appointed as an aide-de-camp to Queen Elizabeth II in March 1960. His final appointment with the RAF was as Director of Establishments at the Air Ministry, London, from January 1962 until his retirement on 30 September 1963.

Later life and governorshipReturning to Australia, Edwards became the Australian Representative for Selection Trust. In 1966 his wife, Cherry, died; he married Dorothy Berrick in 1972. The pair were said to complement each other well, as Dorothy limped on her left leg after being knocked over by a car on a crosswalk in Sydney in 1970, while Edwards limped with his right after his flying accident in 1938. In 1974, Edwards relinquished his position as the Australian Representative for Selection Trust and was appointed Governor of Western Australia. He was sworn in on 7 January 1974, and appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George the following October. On 5 August 1982, while on his way to attend a Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Edwards unexpectedly collapsed and died; his ashes were buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery, Perth, after a State Funeral and cremation at Northern Suburbs Crematorium in Sydney. His Victoria Cross is on display at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, and in November 2002 a life-size bronze statue depicting Edwards was unveiled by then Governor of Western Australia, John Sanderson, in Kings Square, Fremantle. The Hugh Edwards Ward at Hollywood Private Hospital has been named in his honour.
