Palm Beach Synagogue

In January 1994, a small group of dedicated people started holding traditional Shabbat services at Temple Emanuel, in Palm Beach. This gathering was transformed into a community with the arrival of Rabbi Moshe and Rebbetzin Dinie Scheiner. Based

on their philosophy of outreach and inclusiveness, the Scheiners were passionate in their desire to “make a difference.” From its humble beginnings, Palm Beach Synagogue has blossomed into a flourishing center of Jewish life and activity with approximately 300 members. Palm Beach Synagogue prides itself on being a place of warm welcome for Jews from all walks of life and all levels of Jewish observance, while maintaining its abiding adherence to traditional Jewish law and observance of mitzvot. With its inviting spirit, our Synagogue is a place where people are committed to the love and support of our fellow Jews, religious traditions, the community at large, and the State of Israel. Today, the Synagogue is housed in a beautifully renovated edifice, in the heart of Palm Beach Island, two blocks north of the Breakers Hotel. It is a center for traditional Jewish life and education for adults, teens and children. The Synagogue offers unique programs in Jewish education and communal life, numerous youth activities, holiday celebrations, daily morning and afternoon/evening minyanim and weekly Shabbat as well as holiday services. In the summer of 2011, the Synagogue entered the last phase of its recent building renovations and the entire east façade on North County Road was transformed into a unified exterior keeping with the existing architecture.

The Educational and Community Programs described in the Program Guide 5774 are sponsored by Gloria & Harvey Kaylie, Judy & Dr. Edward Steinberg, and Lois & Martin Zelman. Palm Beach Synagogue thanks the Kaylie, Steinberg and Zelman families for their generous support, dedication and commitment.

Most of the Programs in this Guide are complimentary and open to the community; however, there are charges for some. Details, including pricing, will be distributed in a timely fashion by the Synagogue office. updated information for all events can be found at, palmbeachsynagogue.org, in our “Shabbat Shalom”email, and on the Palm Beach Synagogue page on Facebook. Please contact the Synagogue office with your email and regular mailing addresses to ensure that you receive all updates.

Dear Friends,Palm Beach Synagogue has often been referred to as a “Jewel Box.” It is not simply due to the effect of the sun’s rays sparkling and glistening through the beautifully etched stained glass windows. The radiance comes from our inner Jewels, our members. The warmth and beauty of sunny Palm Beach is only exceeded by the inner

warmth and vibrancy of our congregation. We pray, learn, and grow together. We laugh together, and at times cry together.

Ever since the Jewish people stood at Mount Sinai each generation maintained the bond of Judaism through the study and observance of Torah. Like a multifaceted dazzling diamond, the Torah can be studied and appreciated by each and every member of the community from the unique perspective of the individual beholder.

That is why one of the Crown Jewels of our Synagogue is the adult, teen and children’s education we provide. With an extensive lineup of classes, programs, scholars, lecturers and authors, we are constantly expanding and deepening our love of learning, caring for each other, and devotion to Hashem.

We are also extremely proud of the many other Jewels in our crown, namely the daily morning and afternoon services; our Nechamkin Hebrew School, Maimonides Leadership Institute, Michaan Helping Israel and Palm Beach program, Langfan Israel Advocacy course, Bar and Bat Mitzvah clubs and NCSY Youth group; our new Jewish boys scout unit; the Jewish Professionals Singles program; the Cantorial series; the Jewish Film series and our Bikur Cholim and Outreach activities.

We are delighed to present you with the 5774-2013/14 Palm Beach Synagogue Kaylie, Steinberg and Zelman Program Guide. We are extremely grateful to these generous families for their support. We are blessed with the leadership of our esteemed President, Barbara Zimet, and the Board of Directors who maintain the sanctity, dignity and friendliness of our Synagogue; our dynamic and beloved Youth Directors, Rabbi Didy and Devorah Waks; and our dedicated staff, Maxine Kaufman and Amy Szoke, who work every day to enhance our community.

Dinie and I extend our best wishes to you and your loved ones for a happy, healthy and inspiring year at Palm Beach Synagogue.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Moshe ScheinerRabbi Moshe E. Scheiner

Dear Fellow Members and Friends,The Program Guide for 5774 exemplifies the philosophy of Palm Beach Synagogue as a center for Judaism that is welcoming, dedicated to Jewish values and traditions, and spiritually inspiring. Under the leadership of our beloved Rabbi Moshe Scheiner, we open our doors and hearts to those who want to pray together and become part of

our community. We welcome all—adults, teens, children, newcomers, seniors and singles—and offer opportunities for social connection, and spiritual and intellectual growth. We are very proud to boast that we are the only synagogue in Palm Beach that conducts morning, afternoon and evening services every day of the year.

As you peruse this Program Guide, you will find a full range of programs for the coming year. Our adult education classes provide stimulating classes in Bible, Jewish law and customs, and Hebrew language, and there are programs in arts and culture, including our Jewish film series and book club. We have assembled a wide spectrum of guest lecturers and Scholars-in-Residence who will enrich our knowledge of Torah, and deepen our understanding of issues of interest to the Jewish community and the State of Israel. Our women’s programs, under the guidance of our wonderful Rebbetzin Dinie, are guaranteed to motivate and strengthen our knowledge and bonds of friend-ship. We trust that our prayer services will be elevated through the voices of our visiting cantors, and that you will enjoy our celebratory events associated with the Jewish holidays. There is also a full array of special programs and educational opportunities for our children and youth.

We look forward to serving your needs. Our only requirement we ask of you is your attendance—to take advantage of all that we offer for your personal growth and development, including world renowned scholars and personalities.

As your President, it is my honor to wish everyone a wonderful New Season enriched by the many activities, classes, lectures, programs, celebrations and events enumerated in this Program Guide in the year to come. I look forward to greeting you there!

Barbara T.R. ZimetBarbara T. R. Zimet

Mr. Elon Gold is one of the top comedians in the country, having appeared on numerous television shows, including recent appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He embarked on his stand-up career at age 17 and is a very talented writer and actor. He wrote

and performed on ABC’s The Dana Carvey Show and co-wrote, produced and starred in the Sony Televi-sion pilot Good as Gold, with Mary Tyler Moore. Mr. Gold’s comedy takes everyday life and turns it on its head. His point of view of the world is uniquely delivered through absurd observations and by mocking conventions, and beneath much of the laughs, lies a sharp, acerbic social commentary. But wait, that’s not all... He’ll also regale you with his hilarious original characters and offbeat impressions...at no extra charge!

Mr. Gold currently lives in Los Angeles, but if he doesn’t get onto a hit series fast, he will be moving back in with his parents in NY!

TanyaWednesdays, 7:30 pmIsrael Henry Beren libraryWritten by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745–1812), the founder of Chabad, Tanya is the central text of Chabad Chassidism. Its stated aim is to show a path to realizing one’s potential and purpose by developing a deeper relationship with G-d. The Tanya compacts four millennia of Jewish wisdom to answer the great personal and existential questions of life. The Tanya seeks to achieve a change in the way Jews perceive themselves in the world. It has revolutionized the way we think about G d, the human soul and the world.

“Joan and I have attended the Tanya classes from the very beginning and while we sometimes contemplate and ponder concepts new to us, we look forward to each new session. Interacting with our teacher, Rabbi Scheiner, and other “students” enhances the experience. We also enjoy the wit and charm of Rabbi Didy Waks which keep us all alert and interested.”

Rabbi Yaakov Ephraim ParisiOctober 25–26Rabbi Yaakov Ephraim is a Chas-sidic Rabbi who travels around the country inspiring Jews to be excit-ed about Judaism and shows them the greatness of what they have. But the story isn’t so simple. Over

a decade ago, Rabbi Parisi was an Evangelical pastor in Oklahoma. Even as a pastor, he taught his congre-gation to embrace the rituals of the Old Testament — something he had been doing since the 1980s. Yet after almost a decade, he stopped trying to reconcile the Old Testament and the New Testament, closed down his church, moved to Denver and, by 1998, completed his conversion to Judaism before a Jewish court. Since then Rabbi Parisi, the former pastor, has inspired thousands of Jews to ignite their souls with his passion and incredible enthusiasm for Torah.

Izzy EzaguiIsraeli Combat Soldier ExtraordinaireNovember 9Born and raised in America, Izzy Ezagui was invited to join an educa-tional group traveling to Israel when he was 18. He went in search of fun

and returned committed to join the Israeli army. Soon after he finished his training, war broke out on the bor-der of Gaza. Two weeks later, he was hit by a mortar and lost his left and dominant arm. The first thoughts of Mr. Ezagui in the hospital while recuperating were that he must return to combat, and two months later, he was lucky enough to meet a general who gave him that chance. Soon he was doing one-armed pushups, climbing rope, shooting assault rifles, and pulling out grenade pins with his teeth. In May of 2011, President Shimon Peres awarded Mr. Ezagui the highest accolade a soldier outside the battlefield can receive. He has addressed audiences around the world on the topics of motivation, success, over-coming obstacles, and the Israeli army. Mr. Ezagui continues to serve in the military reserves in an elite unit in the IDF.

Although raised in a Roman Catholic family in Havana, Cuba, and descending from Spanish ancestry, Milgrom had strong feelings and an affinity towards Judaism. She provides a first-hand account of her growing unease with the system of social inequality that simultaneously excluded her and celebrated her. Mrs. Abramson’s grandparents left Eastern Europe to escape oppression, only to find themselves in another oppres-sive society. This time, they were on the same side as the oppressors by virtue of their white skin. Along the way, she learns that the real race — the marathon that is a long and eventful human life — is a journey towards compassion.

Biblical Seductions: Six Stories Retold Based on Talmud and MidrashBiblical Seductions retells six biblical stories of seduction, desperation, abduction, violence, and of unique human

kindness. Illuminated through centuries of bold and sensitive Midrashic insight, these ancient tales of Lot and his daughters, Dinah and Shechem, Judah and Tamar, David and Batsheva, Amnon and Tamar, and Ruth and Boaz, reemerge for the modern reader as timeless stories of lust, love, and survival.

Once We Were BrothersRonald H. BalsonShabbat, October 26Elliot Rosenzweig, a respected Chicago civic leader and philan-thropist, is attending a fundraiser when he is suddenly accused of being a former Nazi SS officer named Otto Piatek. Although

the charges are denounced as preposterous, his accuser, Ben Solomon, is convinced he is right. Solomon urges attorney Catherine Lockhart to take his case, revealing that Piatek was abandoned as a child and raised by Solomon’s family in Poland only to betray them during the Nazi occupation. But has he accused the right man? Once We Were Brothers is the compelling tale of two boys and a family that struggles to survive in war-torn Poland. It is also the story of a young lawyer who must face not only a powerful adversary, but her own self-doubts. Two lives, two worlds and sixty years all on course to col-lide in a fast-paced legal thriller. The author, Ronald H. Balson, is a Chicago trial attorney and educator. His practice has taken him to international venues, including small villages in Poland which have inspired this novel.

Judith Lawrence DurrellShabbat, January 4 A breathtaking novel of passion and politics set in the hotbed of Palestine in the 1940s by a master of twentieth-century fiction. It is the eve of Britain’s withdrawal from Palestine in 1948, a moment that

will mark the beginning of a new Israel. But the course of history is uncertain, and Israel’s territorial enemies plan to smother the new country at its birth. Judith Roth has escaped the concentration camps in Germa-ny only to be plunged into the new conflict, one with stakes just as high for her as they are for her people. Lawrence Durrell’s novel offers a thrilling portrayal of a place and time when ancient history crashed against the fragile bulwarks of the modernizing world.

FDR & The Jews Richard Breitman and Allan J. Lichtman Shabbat, march 8 Nearly seventy-five years af-ter World War II, a contentious debate lingers over whether Franklin Delano Roosevelt turned his back on the Jews of Hitler’s

Europe. Defenders claim that FDR saved millions of potential victims by defeating Nazi Germany. Others revile him as morally indifferent and indict him for keeping America’s gates closed to Jew-ish refugees and failing to bomb Auschwitz’s gas chambers. After an extensive examination of this impassioned debate, Richard Breitman and Allan J. Lichtman find that the President was neither savior nor bystander. In FDR and the Jews, they draw upon many primary sources to offer an intriguing portrait of a consummate politician, compassion-ate but also in a pragmatic struggle with opposing priorities under perilous conditions. For most of his presidency, Roosevelt indeed did little to aid the imperiled Jews of Europe. He put domestic policy priorities ahead of helping the Jews and deferred to others’ fears of an anti-semitic backlash. Yet, he also acted decisively at times to rescue Jews, often withstanding contrary pressures from his advisers and the American public. Even Jewish citizens who petitioned the President could not agree on how best to aid their fellow Jews abroad. Though his actions may seem inadequate in retrospect, the authors bring to light a concerned leader whose ef-forts on behalf of Jews were far greater than those of any other world figure at that time. His moral position was tempered by the political realities of the Depression and war, a conflict all too familiar to American politicians in the twenty-first century.

Shira will have to choose between her heart’s wish and her family duty.

NICKY’S FAMILYmonday, January 27, 7:30 pm / International Holocaust Remembrance DayFeaturing Guest Speaker Hanna Slome

A wealthy stockbroker in 1939 England, Sir Nicholas Winton could not ignore the plight of Jewish children and he selflessly organized the evacuation of 669 children from Czechoslovakia before the Nazis could take them away to concentration camps. Sir Winton kept quiet about his philanthropic exploits for years, until 1988, when his wife, Lady Grete, discovered a scrapbook documenting all of the children he saved. Thereafter, she contacted 80 of the children and had them surprise Sir Winton on the British television show, “That’s Life!” He was knighted by the Queen of England, finally receiving the recognition he deserved for his valiance. When Jews reflect on the Holocaust, we are taught to “Never Forget” the horrific atrocities carried out on our people; however, we should also make a constant effort to remember those like Sir Nicholas Winton, a man whose astounding compassion and selflessness are an inspiration to us all.

As a young girl, Hanna Slome (nee Beer) had a wonderful life growing up in Czechoslova-kia. In 1939, Mr. Beer arranged to travel with Hanna’s brother, John, to the US to keep him out of the Czech army. While on their way, Czechoslovakia was invaded by Hitler and they arrived in London as refugees. Through the efforts of Sir Nicholas Winton, it was arranged for Hanna, then a young teenager, to leave home and travel to England. Her mother remained behind as she would not leave her family. In London, the Beers later learned that the mother and her family were sent to Bergen-Belsen. No one survived. When Hanna’s father ascertained what happened to his family, he became very depressed and in 1949

took his own life. John remained in England, but suffered from emotional illness during his life and, at the age of 65, he took his life. In 1944, Hanna left England and settled in New York. There she met Henry Slome, a native of Berlin. After the war, Henry and Hanna were married and they enjoyed 25 happy years together until his death in 1974. Hanna Slome has two children and seven grandchildren. She has visited Sir Nicholas Winton in England on several occasions. She describes him as a person with the energy of a young man, who lives independently and drives his own car.

For generations, the power of Psalms has shattered all barriers. Psalms ascend to the heaven like no other form of prayer, as the Tzemach Tzedek, the third Chabad Rebbe, said, “If one only knew the power of verses of Tehillim and their effect in the highest heavens one would recite them constantly.” To continue this special tradition, the women of Palm Beach Syna-gogue meet to recite collectively the entire Tehillim on Shabbat Mevurchim Hachodesh (the Shabbat when we bless the new month). We invite you to submit names of those who are in need of special prayers. May our prayers help all those in need of blessings for health, happiness and all their desires for good. Chodesh Group Rosh Chodesh, the celebration of the beginning of the Jewish new month, is an especially meaningful day for Jewish women and has blossomed into a celebration of women and femininity. According to tradition, when the children of Israel built the golden calf, the women refused to participate. As a reward, they were given the day of Rosh Chodesh as a special women’s holiday. Women throughout Jewish history have celebrated Rosh Chodesh by taking a break from their everyday lives to enjoy this meaningful day for women.

Women are invited to join our monthly Rosh Chodesh Group and gather to celebrate the new month and our lives as Jewish women.

With its inviting spirit, our Synagogue is a place where people are committed to the love and support of our fellow Jews, religious traditions, the community at large, and the State of Israel.
