have Type 2 diabetes, and Lawrence has had two heart attacks. It is a lot to deal with. But now there are two of us we are working together so we can have a long and happy future together.”

Len“ After my heart attack and

finding out I had Type 2 diabetes I needed to change everything. I got a new job and looked at the way I ate. I wanted to do everything I could to lessen the risk to my heart and become healthy.”

In the first partnership of its kind, Tesco, Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) have come together to help reduce the number of people at risk of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Over the next three years WE WANT TO RAISE £30 MILLION to help millions of people eat better, get active and make healthier choices.

“ I am so delighted we are supporting Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation through our National Charity Partnership. By working together, we can make a real difference to the health of our customers and colleagues and build a better future for the communities we serve. I would encourage every colleague to give their support to this amazing partnership through raising awareness of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and fundraising for these vital causes. I look forward to working closely with the charities over the next three years and hearing all your wonderful stories.”

THE POWER OF THREE

Diabetes UK is the leading UK diabetes charity that cares for, connects with and campaigns alongside people with or at risk of diabetes.

The BHF is the UK’s number one heart charity, leading the fight against cardiovascular disease through research, information and support.

Here at Tesco we are committed to using our scale for good and making healthy choices the easy choice for our customers and colleagues in the UK.

BECAUSE OF YOU

Millions of people could avoid developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease and having to live with their often-devastating effects.

“ Diabetes UK is thrilled to be working with the British Heart Foundation and Tesco in a new National Charity Partnership. This is a hugely exciting opportunity and we hope to help millions of people to make healthier choices. The expertise in health of both charities, together with Tesco’s ability to speak to people in communities across the UK, means we can make a positive difference.”

Barbara Young, Chief Executive, Diabetes UK

“ This ground-breaking partnership is a fantastic way to get healthy lifestyle messages to millions of people across the UK. The sad truth is that cardiovascular disease claims the lives of over four hundred people every day. Thanks to the generosity of Tesco colleagues and customers we will be able to continue our fight for every heartbeat.” Simon Gillespie, CEO,

British Heart Foundation

You are two times more likely to get

cardiovascular disease if you already have Type 2 diabetes

READ ALL ABOUT IT

LOCAL CELEBS AND VIPSA famous face always helps raise the profile of an event and boosts press coverage. If you know of any local celebrities, invite them along as a VIP guest. If you can’t find a local celebrity, then see if your Mayor, local councillor or MP will come along.

PHOTOGRAPHS & VIDEOIt’s more likely that your story will make the newspaper if you provide fun and interesting pictures to bring the story to life.

Try to wear a Tesco National Charity Partnership T-shirt and hold one of our banners, buckets or cans. It’s always a good idea to take your own pictures using a digital camera, even if a newspaper sends a photographer along. You can then send your pictures to journalists who weren’t able to attend. For photography permission forms, call us on the Hotline. If you need any help and support please

contact your Regional Account Manager.

BE SOCIALIf you have a Twitter or Facebook account then you already have an active network of friends, relatives and colleagues. Make sure they know what you’re up to. And don’t forget to share your story on Yammer!

The fantastic fundraising activities you’re organising could make a great local interest story for your local newspapers and radio stations.

PRESS RELEASE TEMPLATES To make it easy to promote your fundraising activities, you can download pre- and post-event templates from the microsite. Simply replace the words / sentences in bold with specific information about the activity you’ve organised. Please only change the sentences highlighted.

CONTACTING YOUR LOCAL MEDIAFor contact details, look in the newspaper you are trying to contact and they will usually have a telephone number or email address. Call them, and ask to speak to the ‘newsdesk’. It is a good idea to call radio stations at half past the hour, as they will be reading out the news on the hour.

TALKING TO JOURNALISTSLike everyone, journalists are very busy, so remember to keep it brief when phoning with your story. Highlight the local link early on to make it relevant. Have the press release close to hand. Ask for the journalist’s name and contact details so you can follow up with an email or phone call.

PREPARING FOR AN INTERVIEWThink carefully about what you want to say – write down all the key pieces of information you want to get across and have your press release to hand. Remember to mention that BHF and Diabetes UK are Tesco’s National Charity Partners.

Please refer any specific questions about Tesco or the charities to our Press and Media Teams;

GUIDELINES FOR COUNTING MONEY Always make sure you count the money in collection cans and buckets with a colleague so that you can both witness and confirm the amount raised.

REPLACING TIN AND BUCKET SEALS It’s essential you replace the security seals on collection cans and buckets whenever you empty them. This provides reassurance to customers and prevents the cans and buckets being tampered with.

DISTRIBUTION CENTRES Please consult with your Distribution Health and Safety Manager. If you have any concerns or need further advice, contact your regional Trading Law and Technical Manager or call the Tesco Hotline.

STAY SAFE & LEGAL

If you have any questions

about fundraising and the law,

please call the hotline

PHOTOS Please make sure you ask permission from people you are taking photos of.

FIRST AID If you are holding an event involving a number of people it’s a good idea to have first aid supplies and qualified first aiders if possible. You can get advice from St John Ambulance (sja.org.uk) or the Red Cross (redcross.org.uk).

INSURANCE If your event involves the general public, please check you have Public Liability Insurance.

FOOD FUNDRAISING To keep everyone safe, please check Food Standards Agency guidelines on preparing, handling, cooking and storing food. Visit food.gov.uk

If you have any questions about fundraising and the law, please call the hotline on 020 7424 1805.

LOTTERIES & RAFFLES

These events are probably the easiest

to organise, but there are a few rules

you have to observe, by law.

Small lotteries

These are the easiest to run:

• Where a lottery or raffle is part

of a social event i.e dinner, fete,

fun day, then no formal licence

or authorization is necessary;

• Not more than £250 can be

spent on prizes

• Donated prizes can be of any

value, but no prize can be in cash

• Tickets must not be sold outside

the premises or grounds where

the event is taking place

• The tickets must be sold and

results announced during

the event.

LICENCESRaffles with customers and those

not part of a social event need to be

handled differently. You must contact

your local authority to obtain a

licence, this can cost around £20–£30

for an annual licence. For raffles

where a licence has been obtained,

raffle tickets must be advertised for

a suggested donation, rather than a

‘price’ of ticket.

If you’re unsure about the legalities

of your raffle please call or email the

Hotline for advice and help.

Please check if your event needs a

licence. You definitely need a licence

if you are selling alcohol. If you put

on entertainment such as a show,

a play, or perform or use recorded

music, please check the copyright

provisions (you may need to ask

permission and pay royalties).

You’ll need a local authority

licence for street collections

away from your store or site

that is private property.

Fundraising should be fun, but it’s important to make sure that your activity is legal and safe for everyone involved.
