Not only are the holidays right around the corner, but so is the end of the year and your LAST CHANCE to take advantage of the Picken Hall Renovation Tax Credit Program. The Kansas Deferred Maintenance Tax Credit Program is a 50% state of Kansas tax credit for contributions made to deferred maintenance issues. Fort Hays State University applied the credit program to the renovation of Picken Hall - the ϐlagship building on FHSUs campus. This calendar year, 2012, is the ϐinal year for gifts made through this initiative to receive the tax credit. Initiated in 2007, the state of Kansas allocated a set number of credits to each state regent institution. These credits were to stimulate donors to support the various institutions, and to help supplement and underwrite deferred maintenance on the state educational campuses. hƩp://foundaƟon. Ĭsu.edu One Tiger Place - Hays, KS 67601 Picken Hall was constructed in 1904 from limestone quarried from the university land. The north and south wings were added on in 1908. During its 100-year lifespan, Picken has undergone only one other complete renovation, which was in 1960. There are a lot of emotional ties to Picken Hall, said Tim Chapman, President and CEO of FHSUs Foundation. Every student who has attended Fort Hays has walked the halls of Picken. This project gives our alumni and friends an opportunity to leave a legacy by naming a space in the universitys most recognizable building. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to those donors who have invested in the Picken Hall project. One donor who has made a substantial contribution toward Picken Halls renovation is Dr. Jeff Curtis, who happens to be our new Board of Trustees Chair here at your FHSU Foundation. We contributed to the Picken Hall project because it is the icon building of FHSU and was in desperate need of renovation, said Curtis. The Kansas Tax Credit was a great advantage and it really allowed us to increase the size of our gift. To anyone who is considering a contribution toward the Picken Hall renovation tax credit program, I would say just do it! I feel like FHSU has played such a pivotal role in my life that it is important for me to give back as much as possible. Tax credits are still available on a ϐirst-come, ϐirst-served basis and can be carried forward for three years. This is your FINAL opportunity to beneϐit from the project that supports the campus that you cherish. Picken Hall was constructed in 1904 from limestone quarried from the university land. The north and south wings were added on in 1908. During its 100-year lifespan, Picken has undergone only one other complete renovation, which was in 1960. “There are a lot of emotional ties to Picken Hall,” said Tim Chapman, President and CEO of FHSU’s Foundation. “Every student who has attended Fort Hays has walked the halls of Picken. Times are changing at Fort Hays State University. With a 4% student enrollment increase over last fall, FHSU is the fastest growing four-year institution in the state of Kansas. Over the past decade Fort Hays has more than doubled in enrollment, despite budgetary challenges on both state and federal levels. It’s amazing to see the tremendous growth that Fort Hays has experienced in recent years, but unfortunately state funding is simply not meeting our needs. For this iscal year, state funding supplies only 32% of the university’s operating budget, and student tuition covers only another 26%. The remainder of FHSU’s operating budget (almost 40%) comes from other sources such as grants and private support. Your FHSU Foundation was excited to announce that the Cornerstone Campaign, the largest comprehensive campaign in our university’s history, was a great success with over $68 million raised. As one door closes, another door to greater opportunity opens for all those who have made Fort Hays a priority. The need for private support continues to escalate based on increases in student numbers and decreases in state funding. We hope that you continue to keep FHSU in your thoughts as you manage your list of charitable interests each year.

From all of us here at your FHSU Foundation: Happy holidays, and may the peace and joy of the holiday season be with you and your family!

FHSU’s campus is growing once again with the Center for Networked Learning. Scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2014, this new facility will use the communications infrastructure of the 21st century to link together three functions: (1) the study of the movement and use of information carried out by the Department of Informatics; (2) the power of the knowledge media as it supports the course design and delivery functions of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technologies (CTELT); and (3) the course and program delivery mission of the university’s Virtual College. There are opportunities available for alumni and friends to partner with Fort Hays State University throughout the building of this new facility. As a donor, you could have your name attached to a space in the building.
