A welcoming, fun-fi lled village.The Falls village lets you experience true ski-in/ski-out

living, nestled in the snowgums on the mountain’s sunny

northern slopes. There are dozens of family-owned and

User-friendly terrain.At Falls Creek, you also choose your own level of

adventure. It’s the ideal place to learn to ski or

snowboard, with a generous selection of ‘green’ runs

(i.e. the easiest terrain), including Australia’s longest

beginner run, the 2.2km Wombat’s Ramble.

Falls Creek is also renowned for having the best ‘blue’

(intermediate) terrain in Australia, which is important

because nobody goes from beginner to expert in a

single step. Wide open slopes and steady gradients

make Falls Creek what we call ‘progression perfect’,

Snow memories for all ages.Kids (and grownups) love to play in the snow. The fi rst

snowball, snowman or snowangel, or your fi rst time on

and keep for life. Kids snowmobiling is on offer at

Hotham, and it’s the only place in Australia that your

kids can do this! Little kids can enjoy singing with Harry

the Snowdragon at his live shows or skiing with him

at The Big D, our specialised children’s centre with

a snowsports school, daycare, café, viewing area

Take a trip to Dinner Plain.Just 10km down the road from Hotham you will fi nd

the alpine village of Dinner Plain where you can stay

in snow-covered houses amongst the snowgums. A

regular bus service links the villages. Here there is a

beginner ski lift where you can take lessons and enjoy

your fi rst time at the snow. Tickets and equipment hire

are available from Hotham Sports, open every day.

Adults can enjoy the Japanese-inspired Onsen Retreat

+ Spa, whilst kids will love the playground and snow

As kids’ skills develop they’ll experience new terrain, different snow conditions and the excitement of the terrain park and kids’ race tracks.

The faster your kids learn to conquer the mountain, the more time you’ll have together on the snow as a family, now and for many years to come.

Skiing or Boarding?It’s the question every snow enthusiast will offer an opinion on. Both sports are mountains of fun. If you’ve surfed, skateboarded or wake-boarded before, you might feel more at home on a snowboard. If you’ve spent more time on rollerblades or roller-skates, you might prefer the feeling of skiing.

The general view is that snowboarding can be hard work for the fi rst few days, which might be spent on your backside watching beginner skiers steadily improving. But from about day three or four, things tend to click for most snowboarders and they improve rapidly to intermediate level. However, over the medium term, many snowboarders plateau and may take a while to push beyond the intermediate barrier; whereas skiers tend to keep making steady progress to advanced and even expert technique and terrain (probably because skiers continue to take lessons).

Both sports take relatively little time to learn and in the end, everyone who gives either a go will have the last laugh. And you can’t lose if you try both!

Guided Mountain Tours – FREEThe Guest Services teams at Hotham and Falls Creek conduct regular orientation tours to make it easy to fi nd your way around the mountains.

Tobogganing – FREEFor a bit of family fun head to the toboggan slopes at Hotham, Dinner Plain and Falls Creek. Access to the slopes is free and toboggans can be hired from Hotham Sports and Falls Creek Sports.

Night skiingHotham and Falls Creek both have great night skiing until late on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Falls has the longest beginner run in Australia under lights.

Hotham and Falls Creek are Australia’s most accessible ski resorts. Whether you’re driving yourself, being driven by coach or landing from above, there’s an option to suit everyone heading to the mountains for a snow holiday in 2014.

FLYYou can fl y directly into Albury Airport with QantasLink, Virgin Australia or Rex from Sydney or Melbourne, and there are connecting fl ights from all other major cities.

Connecting coaches can take you direct to the resorts or you can hire a snow-ready vehicle at Albury Airport and enjoy the drive to the resorts.

Either way, you can board a fl ight in Melbourne or Sydney and be on the mountain in just 3½ hours.

Hotham also has its own airport - Australia’s highest - serviced by private charter operators who offer trips from Melbourne, Moorabbin and Albury.

DRIVEEnjoy the journey through picturesque North-East Victoria with a 4½ hour drive from Melbourne or a 7½ hour trip from Sydney. The roads up to Hotham and Falls Creek are spectacular but safe and cleared of snow daily. Although it’s compulsory to carry snow chains, it’s rare that they need to be fi tted and with the right equipment and instructions that’s not hard to do either.

If you’re approaching Hotham and Falls Creek via Myrtleford, the best place to hire chains is Ray’s Ski Shop (03 5752 1302), where the friendly staff will show you how to fi t them to your car just in case.

Getting around Falls Creek & HothamFalls Creek is a car-free village during winter, when the village roads are covered in snow and all the accommodation on the mountain is ski-in, ski-out. There are also free shuttles to help you get around the resort with and without your skis and an accommodation transfer service to get you and your luggage to and from your hotel or lodge.

Staying at Hotham it’s a ski-in/ski-out holiday, so stow your car keys once you’ve tucked your car away at one of the long term carparks. Then take advantage of the free village shuttle bus. If you’re staying at Dinner Plain jump on the regular inter village bus to Hotham.

Renault Snow Driving Travel Tips

• Add antifreeze to your car radiator• Ensure your car battery is in good condition• Fill diesel vehicles with alpine diesel or additive available at Myrtleford, Bright and Mount Beauty• LP Gas vehicles perform best on petrol in the alps• Carrying snowchains is a legal requirement • Bring a ground sheet and gloves for fi tting chains• Avoid sudden braking or acceleration on snow or ice• A windscreen scraper will clear ice from car windows• You may need a shovel to dig your car out of snow

What else do I need to bring or hire? When you’re packing for the snow you want to pack the warmest, most waterproof clothing you own. Thermals, warm socks and hats, gloves, scarves and anything you can use to layer up is fi ne (layers keep you warm, and also give you more fl exibility on sunny days in the snow). Wool and synthetic clothing is better than cotton,

which tends to absorb snow and sweat, and can make you feel wet and cold.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all the right snow apparel. Most snow clothes and equipment can be rented from

Rays Ski Shop, Hotham Sports and Falls Creek Sports, including jackets, pants, walking shoes, helmets, boards, skis, snow shoes and more. Just about the only things you’ll need to buy or borrow are gloves and goggles (which can’t be rented for hygiene reasons).

Learn to Ski (or Snowboard) Weeks.You can learn anytime you want but if you want to make the easiest transition from watching people having fun on the slopes to being one of them, you should visit during one of our special Learn to Ski (or Snowboard) weeks.

The 21-27 June week will set you up for the season, while the 6-13 September week is just as much fun learning on soft, forgiving snow in the sunshine.

Learn to Ski Weeks are specifi cally designed for fi rst timers who want to give skiing or snowboarding a go. These fun-fi lled weeks also include optional sessions with Ski Patrol plus our grooming and snowmaking teams so you can go ‘behind-the-scenes’ of our mountain operations.

Q: How do I get started?A: You can organise everything online and/or over the phone, from lift tickets to equipment hire, lessons and accommodation, all before you even leave home. It will all be ready and waiting for you when you arrive. Start by contacting our reservations teams. See page 15 for details.

Q: How do I get to the snow?A: Hotham and Falls Creek are the most accessible alpine resorts in Australia. You can fl y, drive or take a coach and be in the snow within hours of leaving Melbourne or Sydney. See page 12 for details.

Q: What do I need to bring or hire?A: Warm clothes, good friends and a winning smile. Snow chains for the car if you’re driving. Everything else you can rent or buy on the mountain. See page 13 for details.

Q: How do I learn to ski or snowboard?A: Quite easily if you take lessons, more slowly and probably less gracefully if you don’t. The only thing more fun and more fulfi lling than your fi rst time on skis or a snowboard is all the days on snow thereafter. See page 8 for details.

Q: What else is there to do on the mountain?A: With more than 40 bars, restaurants and cafés across the two resorts, day spas, boutiques, shows for kids, tobogganing, snowplay, snowmobile rides, snowshoeing tours, scenic helicopter rides, fi reworks… there’s no chance of running out of things to do.
