Breathtaking scenery, friendly alpine villages and the most fun you can have standing up or falling over! The Victorian Alps in Winter are like another world, with dramatic snow-covered peaks, azure blue mountain lakes,

and charming alpine villages nestled amongst the snowgums.

All the picture-postcard mental images you have of the mountains and the snow are here: families building

snowmen together, friendly snowball fi ghts ending in point blank giggles, kids making snow angels and riding

toboggans, parents and good friends relaxing by an open fi re drinking hot chocolate or mulled wine while the snow

falls outside the window and steadily collects on trees, rooftops and window sills.

The snowy alpine villages of North-East Victoria are magical places to spend time with your family and friends.

And learning to ski or snowboard will make your time together in the snow even more special and prepare you for

a lifetime of shared memories and great white adventures.

You can start at the top in Victoria’s premier alpine resorts. If you haven’t been to the snow before or you haven’t learned to ski or snowboard yet, make this your year.

It’s easy to start at the very top in the Victorian Alps, home to Victoria’s two best ski resorts – Hotham and Falls Creek

– respectively the state’s highest and largest alpine resorts. They’re not only the best places to ski and snowboard

in Victoria, they’re also the best places to learn to ski and snowboard.

Establish a new family tradition. Or come up with a bunch of friends.Learning to ski or snowboard is one of the most exhilarating and personally rewarding things you will ever do. And it’s

an accomplishment – not to mention a good laugh – that’s even better shared. Challenge a group of your friends to join

you on a journey you’ll all remember forever. Or bring the whole family or a few families up with you to share the fun.

Skiing and snowboarding are unique among sports in the way several generations of a family can enjoy them together.

We see many three generation families and groups come to the snow every year (it helps that skiing is free for kids 5 and

under and the over 70s). You’re never too young or too old to start having fun in the snow.

MAKE THIS THE YEAR YOU LEARN TO SKI OR SNOWBOARD AT VICTORIA’S BEST ALPINE RESORTS . . .

This Winter join the smile high club.

Falls Creek is famous for happy faces.Falls Creek is Victoria’s largest and Australia’s

friendliest ski resort. And we love nothing more than

introducing fi rst timers to all the joys of the village,

the mountain and snowsports in general. Year after

year, our guests tell us the things they love most

about Falls Creek are the smiles on the faces of our

friendly and encouraging staff, and the sense of fun

and spirit of community across the resort.

Great natural beauty.Set amidst Victoria’s highest peaks and overlooking the

beautiful blue waters of Australia’s highest alpine lake

– Rocky Valley Lake – Falls Creek looks like a ski resort

straight out of central casting. Bring your best camera!

A welcoming, fun-fi lled village. The Falls village lets you experience true ski-in/ski-out

living, nestled in the snowgums on the mountain’s sunny

northern slopes. There are dozens of family-owned and

operated hotels and lodges providing everything from

budget rooms to fi ve star luxury apartments. There are

also more than 30 charming cafés, fi ne restaurants,

cosy bars and cheerful pubs; shopping that runs from

supermarket to boutique; and beauty spas, gyms and

pools for people who are looking to be pampered or just

plain relax.

User-friendly terrain. At Falls Creek, you also choose your own level of

adventure. It’s the ideal place to learn to ski or

snowboard, with a generous selection of ‘green’ runs

(i.e. the easiest terrain), including Australia’s longest

beginner run, the 2.2km Wombat’s Ramble.

Falls Creek is also renowned for having the best ‘blue’

(intermediate) terrain in Australia, which is important

because nobody goes from beginner to expert in a

single step. Wide open slopes and steady gradients

make Falls Creek what we call ‘progression perfect’,

the ideal place to continue to develop your skiing and

snowboarding skills.

It’s a mountain you never grow out of. Groups of mixed

ability (from beginners to experts) can all have a great

time on the same snow holiday.

Reliable snow.Falls Creek is also arguably the most ‘snow-sure’

resort in Australia, thanks to a unique combination of

high natural snowfall (an average of four metres each

Winter), gently rolling south-facing slopes and virtually

unlimited snowmaking from Rocky Valley Lake.

Our 215 snowmaking guns cover more than 100 hectares

of our 450 hectares, including almost all the beginner

terrain, so there is always snow to ski on in Winter.

In fact, we’re so confi dent there’ll be snow on the

ground and ski lifts turning during Winter, we offer a

Snowsports Guarantee (see the website for details or

ask Falls Creek Reservations Centre when you book).

We’re here to make it easy and help you have fun.If you want to start your skiing or snowboarding journey off on the right foot, book a lesson for your fi rst day. You can join a fi rst timers’ Group Lesson and make new friends all starting out at the same level as you, or book a private lesson for yourself and perhaps a few of your own friends or family members.

Either way, you’ll be looked after by our highly qualifi ed ski and snowboard instructors who between them have taught literally millions of fi rst timers to ski and snowboard in resorts all over the world. They’ll be with you every step of the way on your fi rst day, making sure you have a lot of fun as you learn.

Never ever been on the snow? The Falls First Timers pass is for you with a beginner class lesson fi rst up and all day use of Falls Creek’s best beginner lifts plus optional hire. The Falls Learn to Ski & Snowboard Pass is next, with a daily group lesson and then unlimited lift access after day 2.

Just the ticket for Hotham First Timers.A Hotham Learn to Ski or Learn to Snowboard Pass includes beginner lessons on easy lifts days 1 and 2. Then as your skills and confi dence grow you can explore the mountain with unlimited lift access.

You’ll have more fun with good equipment.Make it easy by hiring on-mountain at one of our Falls Creek Sports or Hotham Sports outlets or grab it on the way at Rays Ski Shop in Myrtleford. Our expert staff make sure you’re happy and comfortable with the latest hire skis, snowboards, boots, clothing and more.

Kids Learn to Ski & SnowboardThe Kids Snowsports Schools at Hotham and Falls Creek are safe, fun, action-packed environments that disguise learning as fun.

Kids develop skills quickly in purpose-built gently slopping terrain parks with magic carpet lifts.

When you drop your kids off in the morning, you know they’ll be looked after by our qualifi ed childcare workers, taught by our professional ski and snowboard instructors and entertained by big, blue and very friendly Snowdragons – Harry at Hotham and Pete at Falls Creek! When school is this much fun, the kids just don’t want to go home. As kids’ skills develop they’ll experience new terrain, different snow conditions and the excitement of the terrain park and kids’ race tracks.

The faster your kids learn to conquer the mountain, the more time you’ll have together on the snow as a family, now and for many years to come.

Skiing or Boarding? It’s the question every snow enthusiast will offer an opinion on. Both sports are mountains of fun. If you’ve surfed, skateboarded or wake-boarded before, you might feel more at home on a snowboard. If you’ve spent more time on rollerblades or roller-skates, you might prefer the feeling of skiing.

The general view is that snowboarding can be hard work for the fi rst few days, which might be spent on your backside watching beginner skiers steadily improving. But from about day three or four, things tend to click for most snowboarders and they improve rapidly to intermediate level. However, over the medium term, many snowboarders plateau and may take a while to push beyond the intermediate barrier; whereas skiers tend to keep making steady progress to advanced and even expert technique and terrain (probably because skiers continue to take lessons).

Both sports take relatively little time to learn and in the end, everyone who gives either a go will have the last laugh. And you can’t lose if you try both!

Take the easy option…You can save even more by packaging lift passes, lessons & equipment hire with your accommodation. For package details call… Falls Creek Reservations Centre on 1800 45 35 25 or Hotham Holidays on 1800 hotham.

Hotham and Falls Creek are Australia’s most accessible ski resorts. Whether you’re driving yourself, being driven by coach or landing from above, there’s an option to suit everyone heading to the mountains for a snow holiday in 2014.

FLYYou can fl y directly into Albury Airport with QantasLink, Virgin Australia or Rex from Sydney or Melbourne, and there are connecting fl ights from all other major cities.

Connecting coaches can take you direct to the resorts or you can hire a snow-ready vehicle at Albury Airport and enjoy the drive to the resorts.

Either way, you can board a fl ight in Melbourne or Sydney and be on the mountain in just 3½ hours.

Hotham also has its own airport - Australia’s highest - serviced by private charter operators who offer trips from Melbourne, Moorabbin and Albury.

DRIVEEnjoy the journey through picturesque North-East Victoria with a 4½ hour drive from Melbourne or a 7½ hour trip from Sydney. The roads up to Hotham and Falls Creek are spectacular but safe and cleared of snow daily. Although it’s compulsory to carry snow chains, it’s rare that they need to be fi tted and with the right equipment and instructions that’s not hard to do either.

If you’re approaching Hotham and Falls Creek via Myrtleford, the best place to hire chains is Ray’s Ski Shop (03 5752 1302), where the friendly staff will show you how to fi t them to your car just in case.

You should also follow the Renault Snow Travel Tips and check the Hotham and Falls Creek websites for details of road conditions, resort entry and parking arrangements specifi c to each resort by visiting: • hotham.com.au• skifalls.com.au

COACHIf you want to make the trip even easier, jump on a coach from Melbourne (either at the Airport or at Southern Cross Station) and let someone else do the driving.

A number of bus/coach companies also service Hotham and Falls Creek from Albury, Mt Beauty, Bright, Sydney and Adelaide. For details contact . . .

Getting around Falls Creek & HothamFalls Creek is a car-free village during winter, when the village roads are covered in snow and all the accommodation on the mountain is ski-in, ski-out. There are also free shuttles to help you get around the resort with and without your skis and an accommodation transfer service to get you and your luggage to and from your hotel or lodge.

Staying at Hotham it’s a ski-in/ski-out holiday, so stow your car keys once you’ve tucked your car away at one of the long term carparks. Then take advantage of the free village shuttle bus. If you’re staying at Dinner Plain jump on the regular inter village bus to Hotham.

Renault Snow Driving Travel Tips

• Add antifreeze to your car radiator• Ensure your car battery is in good condition• Fill diesel vehicles with alpine diesel or additive available at Myrtleford, Bright and Mount Beauty• LP Gas vehicles perform best on petrol in the alps• Carrying snowchains is a legal requirement • Bring a ground sheet and gloves for fi tting chains• Avoid sudden braking or acceleration on snow or ice• A windscreen scraper will clear ice from car windows• You may need a shovel to dig your car out of snow

What else do I need to bring or hire? When you’re packing for the snow you want to pack the warmest, most waterproof clothing you own. Thermals, warm socks and hats, gloves, scarves and anything you can use to layer up is fi ne (layers keep you warm, and also give you more fl exibility on sunny days in the snow). Wool and synthetic clothing is better than cotton,

which tends to absorb snow and sweat, and can make you feel wet and cold.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all the right snow apparel. Most snow clothes and equipment can be rented from

Rays Ski Shop, Hotham Sports and Falls Creek Sports, including jackets, pants, walking shoes, helmets, boards, skis, snow shoes and more. Just about the only things you’ll need to buy or borrow are gloves and goggles (which can’t be rented for hygiene reasons).

• Rays Ski Shop Myrtleford 03 5752 1302• Hotham Sports 03 5759 4424• Falls Creek Sports 03 5758 1009

It couldn’t be easier . . . fl y, drive or coach.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all the equipment.

It has never been easier to have a hassle-free fi rst snow holiday. The teams at Hotham and Falls Creek will make sure you have an unforgettable snow holiday with your family and friends. Everyone on the mountain is here to help you every step of the way. Here are some questions we often hear…

Q: How do I get started?A: You can organise everything online and/or over the phone, from lift tickets to equipment hire, lessons and accommodation, all before you even leave home. It will all be ready and waiting for you when you arrive. Start by contacting our reservations teams. See page 15 for details.

Q: How do I get to the snow?A: Hotham and Falls Creek are the most accessible alpine resorts in Australia. You can fl y, drive or take a coach and be in the snow within hours of leaving Melbourne or Sydney. See page 12 for details.

Q: What do I need to bring or hire?A: Warm clothes, good friends and a winning smile. Snow chains for the car if you’re driving. Everything else you can rent or buy on the mountain. See page 13 for details.

Q: How do I learn to ski or snowboard?A: Quite easily if you take lessons, more slowly and probably less gracefully if you don’t. The only thing more fun and more fulfi lling than your fi rst time on skis or a snowboard is all the days on snow thereafter. See page 8 for details.

Q: What else is there to do on the mountain?A: With more than 40 bars, restaurants and cafés across the two resorts, day spas, boutiques, shows for kids, tobogganing, snowplay, snowmobile rides, snowshoeing tours, scenic helicopter rides, fi reworks… there’s no chance of running out of things to do. We’ll keep you and your family entertained. Participate or spectate, it’s up to you. See page 10 for details of just some of the activities and events on offer.

Q: Where do I stay?A: There are more than 5,000 beds in each resort across a range of accommodation styles – hotels, apartments, chalets and lodges – to suit singles, couples, families, friends, extended families and larger groups. See page 15 for accommodation reservations.

Q: What’s the easiest & cheapest way to sort it all out?A: You can save money, make your life easy and focus on having fun by packaging all the elements - accommodation, lift passes, lessons and rentals - before you arrive. See page 15 for details or call us now…
