My Story:

If you’re new to my website and brand I thought it would be a good idea to share a little bit with you about my story. That way you’ll have a better idea of who’s guiding you through this journey to your first $1,000 online.

I grew up in South Africa, right along the Indian Ocean. When I was 17 my family moved to the United States. Even though I loved my life in South Africa I was excited about my chance

at the American Dream.

Early on I was given an infamous piece of advice that you’ve probably heard before too.

Go to school. Get good grades. Get a good job.

Follow that advice and you’ll have the American Dream. At least, that’s what the sales pitch was…

And follow it I did. I graduated in 2007 with a bachelors in Communications and found a job working for a small start up in Atlanta, Georgia. I had over $40,000 in debt in student loans and though I didn’t make a lot of money at my new job, I was still excited about the American Dream.

Then the unexpected happened. If you remember, back in 2008 it seemed like the whole world was falling apart.

I had no idea what the hell was going on, but I showed up to work one day and found out the company could no longer pay me.

I was furious. And scared. I had done everything I thought i was supposed to do to be successful, and now I found myself without a job and no job prospects on the horizon.

Around that time a friend reached out to me about a health and wellness business he had gotten involved with. It wasn’t a job, but it was my first chance at being my own boss and I jumped at it.

It wasn’t easy and I experienced many setbacks, but by 2013 my health and wellness business was doing millions a month in sales. 99 % of the results I had gotten in business had been thanks to online marketing.

Right about now is a good time to make one thing very clear…

I’m not a guru.

At least not in the typical definition of the word. When I think of a “guru”, I tend to think of people online trying to teach others how to have success when they themselves haven’t actually accomplished anything in life or in business.

How can you teach something you’ve never actually done?

As an entrepreneur who’s built several successful businesses I’ve become particular careful about the people that I learn from.

If they don’t have the results I want in life, and they haven’t achieved outstanding success in the same field I’m currently in, then I tend not to pay too much attention to their advice.

Why Grow Your Business Online?

It boggles my mind when I talk to some business owners who don’t do any online marketing. Zip. Nada.

That’s like handing your competitors a blank check to bet against you!

This is the information age for goodness sake. Use it for your advantage.

The day before I wrote this guide I was reading a news report about how Walmart had just bought jet.com, an online retailer, for $3 billion dollars in its bid to take on internet giant, Amazon.com.

At the time of this writing amazon.com does over $100 billion in annual e-commerce sales. And from the looks of this market capitalization chart

Walmart has a lot of catching up to do.

Bottom line?

If you’re not using the internet to grow your business…you’re getting left behind!

Why Focus On Your First $1,000?

When I was growing up my parents wanted me to play musical instruments. I did too, except for one thing. I hated practicing. I wanted to play all the music I heard on the radio instead of playing boring scales and super simple songs like “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

So I barely ever practiced the fundamentals. I wanted to skip straight to being Mozart.

Of course that approach led to disaster—musically speaking.

I have some music ability, but I don’t have the musical understanding or foundation to be a truly great musician today.

All, because I ignored the basics.

I don’t want you to do that in your business. There are principles that you have to learn and eventually master if you want to get to the big money in online marketing.

If you can understand how you made your first $1 online then you can make $10, right?

And if you can make $1,000 you can make $100,000 or more, right?

Your First $1,000 Online -Strategy Time

To make money online you need to have something to sell. It could be a product. It could be your services. But if people don’t see value in what you have to offer they will not give you money.

That word, value, is key. We’re going to be talking a lot about that during our time together. Make sure you write it down.

VALUE.

A sale is simply a transfer of value. Your customer values what you have to offer more than they value holding on to their money so they gladly trade with you.

If you don’t add real value to people’s lives you will struggle to build a long term sustainable income online. You may be able to make a few sales here and there, but the foundation of this business is providing value for people.

But here’s the catch…

Just because you have something valuable that people will want, doesn’t mean you’re going to make money.

They have to first know you even exist and be aware of what you offer.

We call this exposure. If you have value and exposure you have an incredibly lucrative one-two-punch in your online business.

Let’s take a look at a case study to get a better understanding of how value and exposure work together to create success online.

Case Study - Dollar Shave Club

Founded by Mike Durbin, and his partners, Dollar Shave Club has become a phenomenon.

When you think about it their product really is very simple. They sell razors.

Razors.

Would you agree with me that selling razors is a pretty competitive business?

But Dollar Shave Club has been able to carve out a really nice piece of the market for themselves and were recently acquired for over $1 billion!

How did they do it?

Well, when Dollar Shave Club launched in 2012 they posted a video on Youtube. Within their first 24 hours they had signed up over 12,000 customers!

They got so much traffic to their website that the site crashed.

So how did they pull this off?

First, they identified their specific target market.

When most entrepreneurs look to start a business they get excited about how many people would be interested in their product or service. In the case of the razor business we could make a pretty strong case that every human on earth is potential customer because “everyone has hair”.

That would be a mistake.

What you want to do is to refine your target market. In other words, focus on a sliver of a pie instead of on the whole pie.

In DSC’s case they focused on millennial males.

Next, you need to craft a clear value proposition. In DSC’s case that is, “Great razors for a dollar a month.”

Your next step is to develop what I call, “Compelling Character”. If you’re a solo-preneur or online marketer for example this would be your personal brand.

For a larger company like DSC it turned out to be their CEO and founder Mike Durbin.

His biting sense of humor and comedic timing turned out to be a marketing hit!

Whether you have comedic chops like Mike or not is not the point here.

The point is that people do business with people they like, know, and trust.

Creating a personality or even sharing your own personality can go a long way to attracting clients and customers to your business and brand.

I call this your “compelling character”. We’ll talk more about this in a moment.

Focusing on the millennial market and creating marketing content that was relevant to them has done wonders for the Dollar Shave Club brand.

It’s a lesson we can all learn a lot from.

Not only do you need to identify your ideal customer you need to get to know them very well.

You need to know their age, their location, their level of education, how much money they make a year, what they like, what they dislike, what are major life events in their lives, their most pressing desires and concerns, etc.

This takes research.

Do it. It’s absolutely worth it!

Along with your research you’re going to want to survey the competitive landscape of the niche you’re targeting.

What growth opportunities exist? Who are your main competitors? What’s the market size? What separates your offering from others in the market?

These are all questions you should have thought through clearly before you ever take the time to develop any marketing content. This information will help inform every marketing decision you make.

Don’t Be Boring - The Power Of Compelling Characters

“I don’t often drink beer…but when I do…”

I’d be real surprised if you have lived in America for the past 5 years and you didn’t recognize that phrase.

It’s an unforgettable line in the brilliant marketing campaign that Dos Equis launched with their compelling character, The Most Interesting Man In The World.

Establishing trust with your customers is absolutely critical to growing your business and

brand.

The difficulty is that by nature humans are very wary of large corporate brands.

They feel unrelatable and cold. And since people do business with people that they like, know, and trust this can be a pretty significant hurdle to overcome.

That’s where your compelling character comes in. Think of all the social media personalities you’ve seen crop up lately. Many of them seem to

share some of the most mundane things, but their followers feel like they know them, and follow them almost religiously.

They pay attention to what they wear. Where they go. How they talk. What they say.

The theme here is “relatability”.

Start to think about your target audience and identify themes in their wants and needs that you can address with your own compelling character.

Maybe as a solo-preneur that compelling character is “you”.

Or maybe if you have a larger business you and your team decide to create a compelling character similar to what Geico did with their gecko or Progressive with Flo.

In industries that can feel very impersonal and unrelatable to the average consumer, these insurance companies realized that in order to catch their customers attention and stand out from their competitors they needed to share their message through “spokespeople” or “character” that people would enjoy listening to.

Think about ways you can do this in your business and you’ll be miles ahead of your competitors!

Create Compelling Content - It’s The Information Age, Stupid!

I want you to think about the last product you purchased online. Did you do any research first? Maybe you checked out reviews to see what other customers had to say about their experience.

Perhaps you watched some unboxing videos on Youtube to get a better feel for what bringing that product home will be like.

Maybe you just did a simple google search to find out more about that product or service.

Either way, what you did was look for information that could help you make the best decision, didn’t you?

Guess what! That’s what your target customers are doing right now!

They’re looking for answers to questions, thoughts, concerns. And they’re looking for them online.

It’s called the “Information Age” for a reason.

Have you ever walked into a store and said, “I’m just looking?” when a sales clerk came up to you, knowing full well you were looking for a specific product.

You just didn’t want to be SOLD. You’re not alone. People love to buy, but they hate to be sold.

7 out of 10 customers say they prefer reading articles, viewing videos about their options before purchasing. 7 out of 10!

That means by making a small tweak to your marketing approaches you can reach significantly more people than ever before.

We call this technique: content marketing.

Content marketing makes your customer feel like they are in charge of the initial sales cycle.

Since they’re already searching for information about your industry, products, services, competitors etc. all you need to do is provide free, but valuable content that makes their life easier, answers their questions, allays concerns, and you automatically position yourself in their eyes as an authority and resource to trust.

Guess what? When they’re ready to buy, who do you think they’re going to go with?

You, of course!

Because now they know who you are. If you’ve done a good job, they like you and they trust you.

You didn’t have to “sell” them anything.

That’s the power of content marketing and focusing on providing value for your target market before you ever ask them to buy anything.

So what types of content should you create?

You have several great options…

You could teach about your product or service, create content that entertains, provide applications/online utilities, or even focus on content curation or aggregation.

But just because you make great content doesn’t mean you will make money.

Just like being popular doesn’t mean you’ll be profitable.

Before you start running around, looking to create the next viral content that breaks the internet you need to think about how you’re going to collect leads and make money.

That means having a way to collect leads.

My favorite strategy isn’t to get massive amounts of social media followers (although that does help).

I rely heavily on email, and collecting email subscribers as my main lead generation technique. I can’t stress enough how important this strategy will be for you to emulate.

Email is still one of the most powerful communication forms, especially from a marketing perspective. I use a piece of software called an autoresponder to help me manage my email subscribers lists and send out newsletter blasts and updates. Traffic Generation

When I first got started in the internet game, traffic generation seemed like this big complicated math problem that I just couldn’t figure out how to solve.

And that’s because I was going about it the wrong way.

Traffic generation is actually very easy.

Most online entrepreneurs don’t have a traffic problem.

They have an offer problem.

What do I mean?

Here’s the thing- getting traffic to your websites is as easy as buying toothpaste at your local grocery store. You really just need to figure out where your target audience congregates online, connect with those websites, and start paying for them to send you traffic.

That’s really it.

But what happens once you get traffic?

If you don’t have a compelling offer, you won’t generate leads and you won’t make money.

The idea is to create a free giveaway, an ebook, a free course, a checklist, a free audio recording, etc. that provides value and helps your target audience solve a problem.

You will offer this for free in exchange for their email address and them joining your email list as a subscriber.

This free giveaway has to be valuable and speak to the needs of your target audience. If not you won’t get as many leads as you’re hoping for and you won’t build a strong relationship with that market.

Again it comes back to knowing your target market. What problems do they face? What issues can you help them with?

Focusing on the needs of your customers first will always put you in a powerful and profitable position.

Once you’ve created your signature giveaway it’s time to turn on the traffic.

You have several options really: Free or paid.

I started out with free traffic generation strategies. They take more time to see results from, but they definitely work and if you’re tight on money this might be where you decide to start.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite free traffic generation strategies:

Soon you’ll want to start transitioning over to more paid strategies to save you time and get you leads faster. Or if you can afford a little bit of advertising I’d actually recommend starting with paid traffic strategies.
