YOUR DONATIONS HELPED THE VICTIMS & ANIMALS AFFECTED BY NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2017 MORE THAN $200,000 IN DISASTER RELIEF PROVIDED Veterinarians help members of their communities by providing emergency veterinary medical care and temporary boarding to animal victims of disasters. In 2017, veterinarians and veterinary students from all over the country were called to action before, during, and after the hurricanes, flooding, and wildfires. Your donations supported these disaster relief efforts to give help where help was needed. 2017 Disaster Relief Efforts (continued from page 1)

WILDFIRES IN CALIFORNIA Your donations assisted in helping animals affected by the California wildfires. In October 2017, seven wildfires swept across Northern California. In response, volunteer veterinarians, veterinary students, technicians, and assistants from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, provided search and rescue efforts and emergency treatment of hundreds of cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, horses, sheep, goats, cattle, and pocket pets.

LEAVING A LEGACY

The first AVMF Research Grant for Pain Management in Dogs was established through a bequest from Susan Isaac Maylahn. Susan passed away April 21, 2014 at the age of 62. With a B.A. from Illinois State University and an M.A. in Education from National Louis University, she worked as a special education teacher for 32 years in the Barrington (Ill.) School District. She was also a finalist for the Golden Apple Award, given to the most outstanding teacher in Illinois, in 1987.

She was described by friends as a, “sweet, kind, thoughtful, and caring person, both to her students and to her colleagues.”

New Partnership / New Research GrantsIn partnership with the Veterinary Pharmacology Research Foundation, the AVMF provided two new research grants in 2017. This funding will support research into new or currently approved medications for combating diseases and conditions of companion and food animals as well as projects that ensure the safety of food products from treated livestock. Congratulations to these outstanding researchers.

AVMF RESEARCH GRANT FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT IN DOGS$25,000

Congratulations to Dr. Butch KuKanich, Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, on being named a recipient of the AVMF Research Grant for Pain Management in Dogs.

He is researching the development of an abuse resistant oral analgesic for dogs with moderate to severe pain.

Dr. Butch KuKanich

Susan Isaac Maylahn

Susan loved dogs and had a special bond with her Samoyed, Igloo. She was active in the dog walking community, served as a volunteer at Northern Illinois Samoyed Assistance, and participated in special events promoting the breed.

The AVMF is honored to be the recipient of this generous gift.

MADELINE ZUROWSKY North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2020

Career Interests: Companion Animal Medicine

I currently work as an OR Surgery Technician for both our large and small animal

hospitals here at NC State. I get called in after hours when an emergency arises

to help set up the OR suite and prepare the animal and surgeons for the operation.

Over Labor Day weekend, I saw a colic, two foreign body removals, a splenectomy

and then got my final call on Labor Day evening. I had just gone to sleep a few hours

earlier and was not excited for the call, until I found out it was a C-section for a golden

retriever! I love Theriogenology and even though I only got a few hours of sleep that

weekend, it was totally worth being able to welcome a few puppies to the world!

SCHOLARSHIPSBy investing in the education of veterinary students, donors help ensure that future veterinarians have the skills and training necessary to treat our pets, safeguard our food supply, and protect public health.

Madeline Zurowsky cares for a newborn pup delivered by emergency C-section.

A Bright Future for PearlPearl, the dog pictured at left, was found chained up and malnourished. Generous donations were used to help pay for her treatment and shelter during recovery. Pearl was later adopted by her new owner, and as you can see, both couldn't be happier.

The AVMF Veterinary Care Charitable Fund® provides veterinarians with a simple and effective way to offer charitable veterinary services to clients facing personal hardships, as well as a means to support animals rescued from injury, abuse and neglect.

Veterinary practices from every state and Puerto Rico participate in the program. For more information, visit www.AVMF.org/CARE

Now fully rehabilitated, Pearl has a new family of her own.
