A huge shout out to all our families who came and shared the

wonderful experience of our Family Night on Friday 13th

September. With delicious pizzas provided by our local

pizzeria chef, Charlie Cannon - a huge thank you. A special

acknowledgement to our local Icecream and Coffee Vans who

were busy serving up the ever popular icecream and

cappuccinos. It was wonderful to see so many families taking

this opportunity to visit their children’s classrooms and sharing

in the wonderful work that has been done so far this year. It

was great to see our robotics on show. Mr Dixon and Mr Main

coordinated this very popular activity. Drumming, organised

by Mrs Delich turned out an assortment of tunes in the Clare

Parry Forrest. The family movie “Zootopia” was certainly a hit to finish the evening.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making the evening a success, particularly

the P&C for organising the food stalls (fruit and vegetable donated from Newy’s Vegie Patch Kirup)

teachers for preparing their classrooms, students for their great work and our families for their support.

Congratulations to Ella Reeves, Kai Pokkinen, Ava Cain-Mitchell and Aidan Mak for being selected to represent our school at the interschool Robotic Challenge being held at Dardanup Primary School today Tuesday, 24th September.

Our team have been training hard with the help from Mr Main, to meet a range of challenges, making further adjustments to their robots, and ensuring it is capable of each of the tasks. Boyanup will be competing against 7 other schools for the ‘Crown’ in collaboratively building an effective robot and having the skills to manipulate the robot to successfully complete each of the set challenges. We wish our team all the very best and trust they will do Boyanup proud.

Term three will come to a close this Friday, 27th September. Students and teachers

resume for term 4 on Monday 14th October. Please have a safe and relaxing break and I look

forward to seeing you all next term. Justin Grasso

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the

Family Night a huge success!

Thank you to all the teachers, students, parents and community members who attended our Family Night last Friday 13th September. It was wonderful to have so many people come along and celebrate the amazing efforts of all the students at Boyanup Primary School. Stay tuned for our next exciting whole school reward which will take place in Term 4.

Our You Can Do It! focus this fortnight is Happiness. People who are happy and successful are very good at solving problems without fighting. The more you practise thinking before reacting, the smarter and more successful you will be in solving problems.

People can do lots of things to help themselves feel happy. This is especially important to know when you are feeling sad. Being grateful, or thankful, for what you have and what other people have done for you is one thing you can do to make yourself happy. So pay attention to the positive things in your life – don’t just pay attention to the bad things and what you don’t have.

As the weather warms up, it’s time to get the gloves on and get into the garden. The Pre Primary class was kept busy today planting out the trays of vegetable seedlings donated by Holly Harris. The seedlings are so healthy they were nearly jumping out of the trays! Thank you Holly for your kind donation of seedlings, seeds and fertiliser! Produce grown in the school vegetable garden can be purchased for a small donation towards our Waste Wise projects.

Just a reminder that Magpie breeding season is also upon us. It is not uncommon for magpies to defend their nests and young during spring by swooping intruders. The season may last for 6 to 8 weeks during late August to December. Magpies rely largely on intimidation to deter human intruders by flying low and fast, often clacking their bill as they pass overhead. This behaviour can be alarming, but usually is only a bluff. A magpie may strike an intruder on the head with its bill, causing possible injury, but these strikes are rare.

What can you do to avoid or reduce the impact of a swooping magpie:

Never deliberately provoke or harass a magpie. Throwing sticks or stones usually makes them more defensive. Magpies have good memories and they may continuously swoop a potential aggressor.

Avoid areas where magpies are known to swoop. Remember, magpie hostility lasts only a few weeks and they usually only defend a small area of about 100m radius around their nest.

Locate the bird and keep watching it when entering its territory. If it swoops, don’t crouch in fear or stop, move on quickly but don’t run.

If you are riding a bike make sure you wear a helmet, dismount and walk through nesting magpie territory.

Wear a hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella for protection. Magpies initially attack from behind but can swoop back around.

Adopt a confident stance as this can have a strong deterrent effect.

Remember that the magpies are just trying to protect their young. Learning to live alongside wildlife is an important step towards building a better living environment, and observing and listening to magpies can be an enjoyable experience.

in Trampolining. Jake

competed in trampolining

and ‘Double Mini’. His score

qualified him for Junior

State Championships to be

held in Perth next month.
