Field engineers are job-site leaders so our success depends on you.You will represent our company so you need a combination ofapplication knowledge, operational expertise and experience,enabling you to deliver service and maintain our reputation as a leading global oilfield service company. Ultimately, you will be responsible for designing, executing and evaluating wellsite operations.

Join us as a field engineer and you will sometimes have to copewith working in difficult environments. These are hands-on roles,often outdoors and in demanding or harsh conditions – offshore on a North Sea oil rig, or in the desert in West Africa – but they arealso tremendously rewarding. You are likely to have the chance to travel and you’ll be expected to learn a wide range of tasks.

You could be assembling electrical, mechanical or hydraulicallyactivated down-hole equipment at base location, or deploying it at the wellsite. You might be designing wellsite interventionsusing simulation software packages, or analyzing rigsite productutilization and performance data to recommend changes of down-hole assembly configurations. Other jobs include helping salesrepresentatives to develop new business, warehousing andlogistical activities (such as blending chemicals to specification forbulk transfer to wellsite) or producing post-job evaluation reports.

TrainingOur structured three-year LEAD program will help you quicklydevelop your competence with our technologies and processes,enabling potentially rapid career progression through a sequenceof competency-based development steps.

LEAD, which includes theoretical and hands-on learning, is flexibleand adaptable to different job requirements and work environments.There are development programs in a range of disciplines, including:

artificial lift servicescased-hole completionscoring systemsdrill bitsdrilling fluidsdrilling systemsintegrated operationsintelligent production systemslogging while drillingpressure pumpingreservoir navigation servicessand control systemsspecialty chemicalssurface logging systemswellbore constructionwellbore interventionwireline.

Developmental activities initially focus on acquiring basicknowledge while working under supervision within one product line,and will progress to working unsupervised with a broadening scopeof knowledge and skills.

The LEAD program includes formal, structured training, but much of your learning will be field-focused. You can expect to spendextended periods in the field, observing or assisting undersupervision in a range of jobs. As you progress through the program,you will participate in several assessments and reviews to ensurethat you have met all the requirements to move to the next step.

International assignmentsInternational assignments at an early stage are a real possibility.After an initial few months’ orientation and training in your hometerritory, you could find yourself on assignment outside the region inwhich you were hired. You will have the opportunity to work abroadfor a period – typically one to two years – before returning to yournative region.

EDP coursesOur Engineer Development Program (EDP) courses are an importantcomponent of LEAD, designed to help you gain the experience andknowledge you need to become an effective leader.

EDP comprises three distinct courses. Graduate recruits typicallyattend EDP1 within a few months of starting at Baker Hughes. Thistwo-week course offers information about our company and anunderstanding of the oil and gas industry. There’s a team projectthat involves work during the evenings and weekend. Among manyother things, you’ll learn about safety best practice, and about oiland gas industry economics, petroleum geology, exploration, drilling,and completions and production.

Later in your training, you’ll attend EDP2 and EDP3. These are five-day courses intended to help you develop leadership andmanagement skills. Through these events, you’ll also get to knowyour colleagues in different product line areas and build your ownnetwork of expert contacts.

Throughout the training period, you must complete the sequence of courses, structured on-the-job tasks, and activities designed todevelop competency. From the initial understanding of the basictechnology to the advanced knowledge and skill required to delivereffective services to our customers, the learning opportunities keeppace with the rapid increase in job responsibilities. The tightintegration between learning and tasks supports a learning-by-doing approach that matches the complexity of our services and thediverse environments where we work.

Did you know? In 1907, R.C. Baker, a young Californian inventor, wasgranted a US patent for a casing shoe that enableddrillers to efficiently run and cement casing in oil wells.This innovation launched the business that wouldbecome Baker Oil Tools and, later, Baker International.

SupportYour manager will monitor your progress to ensure the timelycompletion of the program, which will lead you to advance throughthree distinct levels (Field Engineer I, II and III) to achieve what wecall ‘Field Engineer General’ level within 36 months. A field careerdevelopment manager will help you to create your own personaldevelopment plan and schedule you on to the necessary courses, as well as helping your managers to plan and facilitate yourassessment reviews.

In addition, you’ll be assigned a mentor, who will work closely withyou, your managers, and training personnel to ensure you have acomprehensive learning experience. Your mentor will support anddirect you through the program curriculum, assist you in preparingfor yearly assessments and final qualification and, ultimately, enableyou to become a mentor yourself to less experienced engineers.

Career developmentField engineers deliver services and information to help our clientslocate, evaluate, and produce oil and gas reservoirs more efficiently.There is no doubt that the job is demanding, mentally and physically,especially in the early part of your career when it is field-focused.

In the longer term, once you have achieved the levels of competencewe expect, we can offer you the opportunity to progress into avariety of leadership roles. You may elect to stay and build yourcareer in the field or you can choose to work in operationsmanagement or move into product development, sales, or anotherbusiness support position.

Shortly after completing your fixed-step training requirements, you’ll be invited to participate in a formal career developmentdiscussion with regional management and human resources

personnel. This discussion willhelp to guide you in achievingyour personal career goals.

Entry requirementsFor field engineer roles, you will need to demonstratethat you are fluent in English (to Level 5 on a globalEnglish test). You must also have the legal right to workin the country in which you apply.

We are typically seeking people who have completed a four-year technical degree or Master’s within the past24 months in:

chemical engineeringchemistry (organic or inorganic)electrical engineeringgeology geosciencesindustrial engineeringinstrumentation engineeringphysicsmathematicsmechanical engineeringmechatronicspetroleum engineeringother engineering-related subject (including civil).

You also need to have at least three of the following: a minimum grade point average of 3.5/4.0 (2.1) or equivalentrelevant work experienceevidence of practical, technical capabilityevidence of relevant extracurricular activity.

We’re looking for people who are motivated andpersistent, as well as resilient and adaptable. You willneed to show creative problem-solving and strongcommunication and interpersonal skills.
