How lovely that we have an extra day this

month! I remember reading somewhere that

someone complained that if we were going to

have an extra day - why couldn’t it be in the

summer so we can enjoy it? I couldn’t agree

more! You can read all about Leap Year Day

on page 6.

We also have our popular Wedding Section

this month starting on page 24. This will be

of interest to any ladies brave enough to pop

the question on 29th February or anyone else

with a wedding planned. There is so much

available on the Island or nearby so why not

try to support your local businesses in the run

up to your special day?

In last month’s issue, we included an article

about 2 young lads who have done some

fantastic work creating a website about their

adventures on Canvey Island. In the article,

the boys told us about their adventure

climbing the Occidental Jetty. We would just

like to point out that we in no way condone

this and remind everyone that it is not only

Leap Year’s Day - 29th February

I’m sure you know that every year has 365 days! Well, it’s not strictly true - it actually takes the earth 365 and a quarter days to complete a full years rotation around the sun so every fourth year an extra day, known as Leap Day, is included at the end of February.

So, why is it called a “leap” year? It is quite

confusing but what happens in a normal year

is that a calendar date that falls on say a

Monday one year will fall on Tuesday the

next, Wednesday the year after that, and so

on. But every fourth year, thanks to the extra

day in February, we would “leap” over

Thursday and that same calendar date lands

on Friday instead.

Babies born on 29th February are called

“leaplings” or “leapers.” It was once thought

that leapling babies would be sickly and

“hard to raise,” though no one remembers

why! The chances of being born on Leap

Year Day are around 1 in 1500.

Leap Year Traditions

In Britain, it is a long standing tradition that

29th February is the only date that a woman

can propose to a man. This supposedly dates

back to the 5th century around the same time

that St. Patrick supposedly drove the snakes

out of Ireland. St. Patrick was approached by

St. Bridget, who had come to protest on

behalf of all women the unfairness of always

have to wait for men to propose marriage.

After due consideration, St. Patrick offered

St. Bridget and all other women the privilege

of being able to propose one year out of

every seven. After a fair amount of haggling

it was agreed that women could propose one

year out of four in a leap year. Then,

unexpectedly, as it was a leap year and St.

Bridget was single, she got down on one

knee and proposed to St. Patrick on the spot.

He refused, of course, bestowing on her a

kiss and a beautiful silk gown in consolation.

Another explanation of the tradition states

that according to English law, February 29th

was ignored and had no legal status. People

therefore assumed that traditions would also

have no status on that day so it was

reasoned that since the leap year day existed

to fix a problem in the calendar, it could also

be used to fix an old and unjust custom that

only let men propose marriage. The first

documentation of this practice dates back to

1288, when Scotland supposedly passed a

law that allowed women to propose marriage

to the man of their choice in that year.

Tradition states they also made it law that

any man who declined a proposal in a leap

year must pay a fine. The fine could range

from a kiss to payment

for a silk dress or a pair

of gloves.

So, if you are fed up with

waiting for your fella to

go down on bended

knee, why not do it

yourself on 29th

February this year -

there’ll be another 1,461

days to wait until the

next Leap Year if you

don’t!

life changing decision to set up a centre that

would offer basic work opportunities in a

safe and caring environment.

There are currently 23 disabled people

attending B.O.P.H ranging in age from 17 to

55. They carry out small but important tasks

such as packing small items or cards and

receive a small wage as well as care

throughout the day. They feel a great sense

of self worth and are able to maximise their

full potential.

The B.O.P.H charity shop was opened in

July 2010 and has proved invaluable in

raising funds for the centre which has yearly

overheads of £52,000. With no help from the

state, this amount has to be raised solely via

fundraising. The idea for the book came to

Glynis one day following a particularly

funny incident that had happened in the

shop. As the volunteers all laughed, she said

“We should write a book about the things

that happen in this place!” That is exactly

what she has done. The book tells not only

of the history of the charity but all about the

people involved including the volunteers and

customers. Lots of funny tales are recounted

that give us an insight into daily life in a

charity shop.

“Simply the B.O.P.H” is available from the

BOPH charity shop in the Knightswick

Centrre and is priced at just £1.50. Thanks to

the generosity of Glynis’s two sons and

daughters in law who covered the costs of

the printing and Canvey based business

Design 4 Print who gave their time free of

charge and printed the books at cost price,

every penny raised from the sale of the book

will go directly to BOPH. To contact BOPH,

telephone 01268 515794.

Glynis Eason is available to talk to local

groups about the book and the work of

BOPH. Contact BOPH for more details.

After volunteering in the charity shop for BOPH - Business Opportunities for the Physically Handicapped, Glynis Eason decided it was time to share the story of the charity and how it came about in order to raise much needed funds to extend the workshop based at Charfleets.

B.O.P.H was founded in 1995 by Joan

Lythgoe and her late husband. Their

granddaughter, Joanne, suffered from

vaccine damage at the age of 9 months that

left her disabled and as she grew older and

left school, the family found that all the

support that was available during her school

years was no longer available. There

appeared to be a huge gap in the support

system and a complete lack of work

opportunities for young adults with

disabilities. Joan and her husband made the

We often hear that “in the old days” Canvey Island was made up mainly of farms. Most of these farms are no longer here but their names are still used to describe the area where they once were. You may not of even known that an area was named after a farm! Here is a brief look at some of the old farms on the Island.

Charfleets Farm was owned by James

William Cass (known as Bill) who, along with his father John Cass, also owned Hill Farm, Little Brickhouse and Cutter Farm. Flavia Miller, the daughter of Bill

Cass told Your Canvey:

“We had cows at Hill Farm and at

Charfleets Farm, horses and the stack yard

which was full of hay and corn stacks. There

was a huge barn where us children would

play for hours. Mum and Dad had a house

built where the roundabout is now at

Northwick corner. There was also a

roughcast bungalow going towards Benfleet

and that was my grandfather’s house. A little

bit further along from there was the

farmhouse and the cowshed used to be

behind that.

I remember when I was very young, my

grandfather used to have a milk round. He

Canvey History

The Farms Of Canvey Island

had a horse with a milk float containing big

churns of milk and would pour the milk into

people’s own jugs using huge metal scoops.

Every Autumn, Dad used to deliver 100

weight sacks of potatoes from the farm.”

Furtherwick Farm was purchased by

G.H.J.Chambers in 1916 at an auction in Rochford, together with Little Gypps Farm.

G.H.J Chambers grandson - George Chambers

says:

“When I was young I was told that the farm

was 300 years old and from its construction I

can believe it. The house stood on corbelled

brick foundations on one of the high points of

the island (the flood did not reach it.) The

house was on the site of what is now the job

centre, the barns and farmyard are now the

Rio Cinema and the two shops. There was an

orchard from the farm to the south end of the

row of almost detached houses facing the

road.”

In the 1920s, George’s father established a pedigree herd of cattle at Little Gypps Farm. George says: “As well as the farm, my

father had milk rounds and two grocers shops.

One at Smallgains and the other on the corner

of Chamberlain Avenue. In the field where

Thameside Crescent is now, there was a very

large sign, more of a hoarding, in large letters

reading “Chambers Dairies. Milk from

Contented Cows.” I still encounter people

who when they were young came to Canvey

on day trips, got off the bus at the Haystack

where their parents had a drink, then on to the

seafront, stopping on the way at Furtherwick

farm for glasses of milk for the children.”

You can read the full version of both these

stories in our local history book “Your

Canvey Memories” available from Happy

Days cards & Gifts or from

Castle Point PubWatch has brought a little New Year cheer to two charities with a timely boost to their fund-raising efforts.

Over £180 has been donated to the Canvey-

based Indee Rose Trust and a further £138 to

the Little Havens Children’s Hospice. The

money was raised at two Under-14 discos

for local schoolchildren organised by

PubWatch as part of Drinkwise, the alcohol

education event in December, to illustrate

that having fun and a good time was not

dependent on drink.

PubWatch, which brings together local

licensed premises, aims to create a safe,

secure and responsibly led social drinking

environment in pubs and clubs across the

borough. Alun Johnson of The Windjammer,

chair of Castle Point Pubwatch, said: “As

well as giving the young people an important

lesson in life, the discos provided an

opportunity to raise much needed funds for

these two very worthy causes at a time when

charities generally need all the help they can

get ”

Alun Johnson, Chair of Castle Point Pubwatch, licensing

officer Pc Kevin Hemsworth of Essex Police and Steve

Murphy, Patron of the Indee Rose Trust.

some 6 years ago. John will continue

to work closely with Glen and use his vast

networking experience to bring in new players

as we need them.

Glen has previous management experience

with Ware Town and Waltham Abbey and

together with his excellent coaching work at

the club over the past 2 seasons fully deserves

his chance to lead the club forward. We all

wish him well.

Results have again been extremely mixed as

we look to find consistency in our

performances. We remain in just one cup, the

Essex Senior Cup, where we face Dagenham

and Redbridge at home in the Semi

Final on Tuesday 7th Feb 7.45pm

kick off. The other semi final sees

local rivals

Concord Rangers entertain

Colchester United. In the league we

have

lost games against teams down the

lower end of the league but have

beaten a team at the top. Hopefully a

change in management and no

doubt a change in playing personnel

will provide the consistency missing

from our game.

Off the pitch we have Rock and Roll

Group Kick Start performing live

at the club on Friday 24th February. Entry is

just £5.00 and can be paid at the door on the

night. Our Bingo nights every Sunday starting

at 6pm continue to be very popular so why not

come along and join the fun. Please keep an

eye on our official website for details of future

events.
