Welcome to the June issue of Your Benfleet & Hadleigh Magazine!
We’re half way through the year already and
it seems that it is really true that the older you
get, the faster time seems to go! Mind you,
perhaps it has something to do with me having
just turned 40 at the end of May that is
causing time to pass at such an alarming rate!
One of the great pleasures I have in producing
our magazines is the wonderful people I get to
meet. In June, I was interviewed on the
“Getting to Know You” spot of the local
community radio station Link Radio. I was
asked not only about the magazines but also
about our new book - Your Canvey

The 25th July is St Christopher’s Day. He is the patron saint of travelling and travellers, mariners, ferrymen
and also athletes.
There are several accounts and legends
surrounding St. Christopher’s life and death.
There are known historical facts that he lived
in the late third and early fourth century and
was taken prisoner in a war with the Romans
in North Africa, present day Libya. He was
forced to travel a great distance back to
Rome and was assigned as a Roman army
officer during the reign of Emperor
Diocletian. This emperor decided to
persecute Christians, and to his surprise one
of his guards refused to participate and
proclaimed himself a Christian. This
Christian was our current day St. George.
The emperor ordered that St. George be
tortured and killed. St. Christopher watched
the torture and killing and shortly after
declared himself to also be a Christian so the
emperor declared St. Christopher be
tortured and put to death.
Legends depict St Christopher as a giant
who devoted his life to carrying travelers
across a river. One legend states that
Christopher, supposedly a Canaanite,
was a giant of fearsome appearance, who
first decided to serve the Devil, but
finding that the latter was afraid of Christ
and his Cross, decided to serve Christ
instead. A hermit instructed him in the
Christian faith, and assigned to him as
his Christian service residence near a
river and helping travellers to cross it.
Another popular legends includes the
story that one dark and stormy night, a
child came to Christopher and asked to
be carried across the river. Christopher
put the child on his shoulders and waded
into the wild river. He found the child
unusually heavy and had to struggle
desperately to reach the other side. When
he reached the other side, the child told him
that he was Christ and that he had carried the
weight of the world on his shoulders. The
literal meaning of the name Christopher is
Christ Bearer.
Medallions with St. Christopher’s name and
image are often worn as pendants by
travellers to show devotion and to ask for his
blessing. His
statues were
placed at the
entrances of
churches and
houses and often
bore the
inscription:
“Whoever shall
behold the image
of St. Christopher
shall not faint or
fall on that day.”

Link Radio Trust
Angela Owen with Chairman John Brennan
Last month, I was pleased to be invited to appear on the “Getting To Know You” spot on Link Radio, a voluntary local station providing a radio service tailored to the residents of sheltered accommodation.
Link Radio Trust has been running for 25
years and is broadcast 365 days a year, 24
hours a day to elderly residents in sheltered
housing schemes through-out Essex. It is
manned and run solely by volunteers who
willingly donate their time not only to
broadcasting but to raising the much needed
funds to keep the station going.
The station was founded in 1984 by John
Brennan who is still the chairman of the
trust. It provides all types of music and a
whole range of shows including Gardening
programmes, and feature shows such as
“Getting to know you” and “Story Time” -
both of which feature people in the
community that have a interesting story to
tell.
Since the outset, Link Radio Trust has been
entirely self funding. Manned entirely by
unpaid volunteers, the running costs
have been manageable over the years
by holding a number of excellent
fundraising events. This year,
however, there is a problem and a
need to raise a large amount of funds.
The Hadleigh based studio has been
affected by subsidence and wood rot
and needs to be completely rebuilt in
order to continue providing the much
loved radio service to the elderly. A
total of £100,000 is needed and
various events are currently in the
pipeline to raise money to have the
studio re-built. Fundraising is already
underway, the most recent of which included
5 members of the team running in the
London Marathon.
A Celebrity Auction is planned for later in
the year and the Trust are currently on the
lookout for any autographs or other signed
memorabilia you would be willing to donate.
A 40s dance with Melvin Beddows Big
Band is being held on 11th September to
celebrate the 25th Anniversary. This event
will be held at the Runnymede Hall, Benfleet
and tickets are just £15 (40s dress is
optional) Forthcoming events also include an
Open Flower Garden, Chinese Buffet and
Karaoke night.
If you would be interested in helping of with
trust, there is always a place for someone
who can demonstrate commitment,
reliability, and a sense of caring with self-
pride in their ability to serve others, and not
let the team down. There are many interests
within Link that you could get involved with
as well as helping with fund raising.
For more details of all these events or to find
out how you can become involved with
supporting Link Radio Trust, contact 07865
344704.

South Essex Koi Club members found them all to be run in a very
formal manner with committees and wanted
something without all the red tape often
involved in larger organisations.
The club members all believe that learning
doesn’t have to be a serious process and try
to make the meetings fun. All members get
support from others in the club from
microscopic diagnosis of koi ailments to a
discounted shop for food and pond parts.
They also hold an annual dinner and dance
and regular trips to other clubs in the south
of England.

The South Essex Koi Club is a friendly local club holding meetings once a month at St Mary’s Hall in Benfleet.
The club was formed 11 years ago by a
group of koi enthusiasts who decided that a
new type of Koi Club was needed to
promote their hobby. Although there were
other groups in the area, the founder
Community Breakfast in Hadleigh
Local residents and community groups were
invited to a Community Breakfast by Castle
Point Association of Voluntary Services
(CAVS). The event, which was attended by
over 60 individuals, took place at Hadleigh
Methodist Church.
As well as enjoying a continental breakfast,
attendees were informed of the new food
waste recycling scheme being launched by
Castle Point Borough Council in July and
the Be Safer Project operated by
CAVS. This project has seen 4 multi-
agency groups set up across Essex to
develop schemes which improve the safety
of adults with learning disabilities.
The Be Safer presentation included an
extremely brave talk by Bernie Wood who
has been the victim of crime. Unfortunately
his story is not uncommon and the Be Safer
Groups are coming across many similar
examples of individuals who are frequently
the victims of hate crime. Through the
creation of a variety of schemes the Be Safer
Groups are raising awareness of this issue
and empowering individuals not to suffer in
silence.
For more information about either of the
topics discussed or about the Community
Breakfasts in general please contact CAVS

Kent’s Hill Junior School Radio Club
We like to feature people of all ages in our Local People section and this month we are pleased to introduce you to some of the pupils of Kent’s Hill Junior School who attend a lunchtime radio club run by a parent.
Six talented and extremely keen year 5
pupils at Kent’s Hill Junior School have
been learning all about radio from Michelle
Durant, a parent at the school who regularly
volunteers at the Gateway Community Radio
Station based in Benfleet.
The club started in November 2010 when
Michelle felt that children at the school
could benefit from her knowledge and
experience. Meeting every Thursday
lunchtime, the members of the club have
been learning about how radio stations
operate, how to interview people, how to
make adverts for radio and how to edit
material.
The six members of the
club are Abbey Harvey,
Grace Goodall, Daniel
Bull, Brandon Emerick,
Thomas Bailey and
Hannah Worsfold.
They have been
working on putting
together a documentary
about the 1953 flood on
Canvey Island and I
was happy to help by
donating a copy of my
new book “Your
Canvey Memories”
which includes first
hand accounts of the
night of the flood. I was
also interviewed by the
children and was amazed at
their enthusiasm as they put what they have
learnt into practice. The interview was
actually broadcast at the beginning of June
on the Gateway Radio Station.
They have also been working on putting
together a number of adverts aimed at their
peers all about Road Safety which will be
included as part of their final hour long
broadcast. The children have written the
scripts for the adverts as well as recording
and editing them.
I asked the children what they thought was
the best thing about being in the radio club
and whilst some enjoyed the interviewing
and recording, others enjoyed the
background research and learning all about
the flood and what happened. The idea of the
Radio Club is teach new skills that will be
relevant in the children’s future and it is
great to see parents in the school sharing
their experiences with the children.

For most, headaches strike occasionally, for
others they are frequent and can cause a great
deal of suffering. There are many different
forms of headaches with varying symptoms
and level of pain. The most common form of
pain relief is analgesics, however headaches
always have a root cause and medication
rarely addresses the root cause. Some of the
most common causes include:
Faulty Posture
Recent studies suggest that as much as 95% of
headaches are due to faulty posture. For
example prolonged periods of sitting can over
time cause slouching, rounding of the
shoulders and extension of the neck. This
continually compresses the joints and blood
vessels at the top of the neck where the neck
joins the skull causing headaches. Luckily
posture can always be improved via a number
of methods:
Become aware of your posture. Most of us
slouch without realising. By actively
increasing your awareness of your posture
will help develop good postural habits.
Get up frequently. Anytime you are
sitting, be sure you are breaking up the
sitting time with frequent breaks
ideally at least every hour.
Exercise and stretch regularly. To
maintain good posture our body needs
to be flexible, supple and have strong
postural muscles. This can be achieved
through a corrective exercise/stretching
programme. We assess and prescribe
postural programmes for our patients,
but there are many other sources of
information which can help such as
books, DVD’s, websites, gym programmes
etc.
Hydration
Dehydration is another common
cause of headaches. The
symptoms of thirst indicate you
are already dehydrated. It’s best
to avoid becoming dehydrated in
the first place by sipping
sufficient quantities of water
regularly throughout the day. Tea
and coffee do not count and
actually encourages dehydration
due to caffeine content.
It can be difficult initially to
remember to drink water.
Carrying a bottle of water with
you will help. If you find it
difficult to drink plenty of water
then start with a small bottle and
gradually increase your intake
until you are drinking a large bottle or more
every day.
Diet
Headaches are frequently a symptom of a
dietary problem. Following a healthy eating
plan will help resolve many of the dietary
causes of headaches. Fad diets should be

Prioritize your time: Many clients we see
have so many demands on their time it can
become overwhelming. It is vital to consider
your own health as important and become
clear on what, in your life, actually needs
attention and what doesn’t.
This is by no means a complete list and I
would have loved to have discussed the topic
in more detail. On rare occasions headaches
can be an indication of a serious underlying
pathology which should be ruled out.
Thankfully the large majority of headaches
are not serious and are treatable. When we
approach treating the cause and not just the
symptoms a great deal of suffering can be
prevented. For more information contact

avoided as they often deprive the body of the
nutrients required for health. Always
purchase the best quality food possible
incorporating a variety of fresh organic
vegetables, free range meats and wild caught
fish. Never skip meals as it disrupts blood
sugar levels and often leads to poor food
choices. Try to make your meals from scratch
as it avoids consuming unnecessary
preservatives, food additives and artificial
ingredients which have been linked with
headaches and a large number of health
complaints. Gluten is the most common food
allergy associated with headaches and
migraines. Eliminating gluten completely for
30 days will help identify if it is the cause of
your headaches.
Stress
Stress is commonly associated
with headaches. Avoiding
stressful situations as much as
practically possible is
therefore an obvious
successful remedy. We cannot
avoid all stress and therefore
need to have other options:
Make quiet time and learn to
relax: No matter how busy we
are it is vital to schedule in
daily quiet time. Whether you
meditate daily, relax in a bath,
go for a walk or just spend an
hour a night with a book, you
need to create a space where
you can clear your mind and relax
Make time to spend with positive people: Being around positive people is contagious
and helps improve frame of mind and build
relationships.
Talk it out: Holding onto negative emotions
is unhealthy. Speaking with a friend, family
member of trained person can help to reduce
stress.

5th July 1946 - Today, the modern bikini
made its debut on the Paris catwalks. It was
invented by French engineer Louis Réard
who named it after Bikini Atoll, an island in
the South Pacific. This was the site of the
Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon test
on 1st July 1946 and the reasoning was that
the burst of excitement created by the swim
suit would be like a nuclear device. Réard
could not find a model who would dare to
wear his design. He ended up hiring
Bernardini, (pictured above) a 19 year old
nude dancer from the Casino de Paris as his
model.
9th July 1887 - The first Lawn Tennis
Championship was played on top of the
Croquet Lawns at Wimbledon. The only
event held in that year was the Gentlemen's
Singles which was won by Spencer Gore
About 200 spectators paid one shilling each
to watch the final.
13th July 1985 - The Live Aid multi venue
pop concert raised over £50million for
famine relief in Ethiopia. The main sites for
the events were Wembley Stadium, London
and JFK Stadium, Philadelphia. An
estimated 1.5 billion viewers in 100
countries watched the live broadcast.
17th July 1917 - On this day, King George
V proclaimed that the British Royal family
would be adopting the name of the House of
Windsor. This was to replace their German
family name of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
25th July 1978 - Shortly before midnight
today, the worlds first test tube baby, Louise
Brown, was born in Oldham General
Hospital in Manchester. Gynaecologist
Patrick Steptoe and Physiologist Dr Robert
Edwards are credited with this pioneering
work.

Your Fertility and Complementary Therapies
These days more couples are having problems having a family. Over my years of practice, I’ve known my clients conceive even when the chances have been very slight. These couples may already have been trying for several years and be undertaking fertility treatment such as IVF.
Couples are said to be suffering from Sub-
Fertility or Infertility when they have been
trying for a baby for more than two years.
Ladies particularly find that they can focus
on little other than the fact that they are not
pregnant and want to be.
So what is causing these problems? Modern
life is very demanding for most and lifestyle
habits such as working long hours, poor diet,
alcohol consumption, little exercise or fresh
air and stress, all can affect our health and
our fertility.
Medical treatments focus mainly on physical
issues and often there aren’t any obvious
physical reasons for infertility. I encourage
my clients to focus on creating a healthy
lifestyle, building in more fun and relaxation
and getting their bodies to work as
efficiently as possible with the aim, not just
of getting pregnant but of creating a really
healthy, happy family. The right support can
help you relax and get on with life again,
enjoy being with your partner, not just
thinking about making babies.
These are some of the tools I use to help you:
Reflexology and Bowen Technique
Treatments are always aimed at helping you
really relax and let go and to feel calm when
things are tough. In a reflexology treatment,
the whole body is worked, giving the best
chance for healing and balancing to take
place. Ladies find the sessions very beneficial
for any hormone imbalances and I can focus
in on known trouble spots, to stimulate
ovaries and help your body clean itself better.
Laura, now mum of Lucy says. “Reflexology
helped, I’m sure, even when things seemed
futile.”
Aromatherapy is a tool to change your mood
in an instant and help you control your
emotions. When you are relaxed after your
treatment, I give you an aroma you love to
smell. You take the oil home with you and
you have a powerful tool to bring back that
relaxed feeling whenever you want to unwind.
Australian Bush Flower essences help to
prepare you emotionally and physically to be
a parent. She Oak has a natural balancing
effect on the ovaries and the female
reproductive system and others tackle
anxieties about becoming a parent and also the
stresses of trying for a baby.
I also refer couples to trusted colleagues for
nutritional advice, acupuncture and if they are
considering or undergoing fertility treatment,
