We didn’t think Bill could top the Colorado trip in 2015, but he did. We toured all New England States plus a trip to NYC. The Tichys and Dyers had lived in the area for many years before coming to God’s country---TEXAS, so it was like having our own personal guides. I’m sure the train trips into NYC and Boston would have been a tre-mendous challenge without them, maybe close to impos-sible! They resembled shepherds guiding their flock. The highlight of NYC was seeing the pools where the Twin Towers stood (below). Such a sobering experience. One’s level of patriotism soars, as the flood of memories become fresh again.

On a lighter note, Times Square was quite an eye opening experience, especially for our fearless leader. It took several days for the grin to finally leave his face. (right). We went to Battery Park, as we looked across to New Jersey, Bob asked Larry if he thought he could walk on water to the Jersey side. Larry with his dry sense of humor replied, “Why in the world would I want to do a thing like that?” Obviously, New Jersey doesn’t hold much appeal. Larry is quite humorous, and added a lot of fun to the trip. We toured West Point in Highland Falls, NY. It is such an impressive setting on the Hudson River. The Academy has been educating and training leaders of the U.S. Army for more that 200 years. Some of the famous alumni

include:Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, Dwight Eisenhower, Custer, Stonewall Jackson Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Ulysses S. Grant. Some of our great-est military leaders have graduated from the Academy, having made significant contributions to U.S. history. (cover photo) Callaway Corvettes was our next stop in Old Lyme, CT. The engi-neers take our fast cars and make them even more power-ful, very high performance, at a very high price. Of course, the guys would feel it was worth every penny. The only com-plaint I had with their operation, there wasn’t a shoe sale going on in the entire place. The day was capped off with a celebration of Jan’s birthday (9-23). We had deli-cious cupcakes after dinner in Niantic, CT. The day was filled with so many sights, that it was nice to end with special together time. We visited Mystic Sea-port Village in Mystic, CT. The shipyard is rem-iniscent of early days, when craftsmen built wooden ships, and everything a seaworthy vessel needed. They have a 1921 fishing schooner, 1908 steamship, and the last remain-ing wooden whaling vessel in existence. It was a unique village depicting early life in regard to making your living totally from the sea. We had a surprise treat in Woburn, MA. The Tichys took us by their daughter’s Victorian home. They have renovated it, with the help of Mom and Dad, and did a beautiful job. The woodwork is so beautiful in those old homes. We met her husband, daughter and son, such a

lovely family. A family to be proud of for sure! In Boston, our guide (left) was a Corvette enthusiast. His Dad had a 1962 so he was certainly in the right group. If we had a history teacher like him in school, the subject would certainly been a lot more interesting. He was a hoot! There are so many historical sites to see in Boston: Freedom Trail, Old State House where our Con-stitution was first read from

the balcony to all the citizens, and the gravesites of our Founding Fathers. All the sites of Boston made you realize what a price our Forefathers paid for our freedoms that we enjoy to-day, and sadly some time take for granted. We saw beauti-ful seascapes all throughout the trip, and ate delicious lobster, along with all varieties of seafood.

Lobster in Dallas just doesn’t taste quite the same as fresh caught in New England. We visited Sea Cove Car Mu-seum in Maine. There were many

unique cars that were unfamiliar to us, so that was very interesting—even an electric car from 1904. Nothing is new under the sun! Bailey Island was beautiful. The highlight was the kayaking ex-perience that Bill, Sam and Bob had. Sam and Bob were novices, but Bill had kayaked before, so he gave them some pointers. We watched and laughed until tears streamed down our face. I don’t know which was more hilarious, the embarking or disembarking. No one capsized, but there were a few anxious moments. We spent a night in a beautiful farmhouse at Shel-burne, NH, Philbrook Farm, built in 1834. Bill and Nadine

7

had stayed there 30 years ago, that made it even more special. Although I don’t know how they ever found it without a GPS or at least a guide dog. To say it was isolated is an understatement. The farm remains in its original owners’ family. A brother and sister run it today. They never married, so I don’t know what the future holds for the farm after they are gone. The foliage was beautiful in all states, but most spectacular in NH. All the pictures didn’t come close to the vivid colors we saw with our eyes. It was great being a leaf peeper, as the natives call us tourists! In Bath, VT, we saw a covered bridge built in 1849. (first photo) We took pictures of the Corvettes driving out of the bridge. That was a real highlight for me. I had a friend many years ago who grew up in Vermont, and talked about the covered bridges. So, that had been on my bucket list for a long time. Thanks Bill for taking us there! Bob and I left the group at this point because we had a trip to Arkansas starting in a few days from our return home. WHAT WERE WE THINKING? You know old stones have to keep moving or they will gather too much moss. We had so many laughs and memorable moments on this trip, I could never report them all. Traveling together with friends makes for a wonderful time. If Bill recovers enough to ever plan another trip, make sure you sign up!

New England or Bust by Larry Dyer

They say “Life is Journey not a Destination”. The same can be said about a Tichy Road Trip! The 2016 New England trip was a fabulous three weeks. As many as seven cars spent three weeks seeing the sights on the East Coast. The rough itinerary follows, but the story is about so much more than an itinerary. It was about getting to know each other, meeting new people along the way – like the tour guide in Boston and the host at a little hotel in Rhode Island. We shared some great travel destinations like Boston, the mansions in Newport, LL Bean, and Bar Harbor. We also experi-

enced some new ones like Bailey’s Island in Maine, a great car museum hidden in Bar Harbor, and the Phil-brook Inn in New Hampshire. We ate lots of great food (especially lobster!), we shared a few adult beverages, we learned to be “flex-ible” with the schedule, and we built those memories that will be with us for a very long time. Here is the rough itinerary – I wanted to share it with you so you can see the amount of planning that went into this.

Another Great Tichy Travel Adventure. The Tichys and Dyers have talked about this ad-venture for some time. We thought - hey, why don’t we bring our “Texan” friends to see the part of the country that we love and know so well. Bill started planning, presented a tentative itinerary, and September finally came! The Tichys traveled from Wisconsin to Connecticut, and the Dyers led the small but mighty caravan from Texas to Connecticut. Day 1 - With Norwalk, CT as our two-day headquar-ters, our first stop was Ground Zero in NYC. A full day in Manhattan was fun and very moving.Day 2 – A visit to West Point with a great tour to share some of the amazing history of that site. That afternoon was a visit to Calloway Corvettes in Old Lyme where we enjoyed a tour of the factory where it all happens. GREAT hotel in Niantic for the night.Day 3 – Travel towards Rhode Island with a stop in Westerly, RI at the Blue Whale Inn. Small rooms, but a terrific host (and free wine!). Day 4 – Sunrise on the beach where a triathlon was in progress by some very hardy New Englanders!Day 5 – We spent much of the day at the mansions at Newport and then traveled to Woburn for fabulous Ital-ian cuisine in a neighborhood restaurant. Truly a New England tradition!Day 6 – Traveling by train into Boston for a fabulous tour with Captain David (aka Josh). Lots of walking and laughing (Linda Denault had the best time and appar-ently thought the Captain was hysterical!!!) Great lunch at Quincy Market and off to the Duck Boat Tour of the river. Day 7 – Headed to Hampton Beach, NH where some of us had our first taste of lobster! Our next stop was the Cape Neddick Lighthouse and overnight in York (another superb meal of lobster and other awesome seafood).Day 8 – Brings us to Kennebunkport and LL Bean and then off to Bailey’s Island (surely this is heaven on earth!). Some of the boys went kayaking, some washed their car (Larry), and others just enjoyed the fact of be-ing surrounded by water and views. Dinner and more lobster.

Day 8 – Sunrise on Bailey’s Island is not to be missed and then on to Booth Bay Harbor and Camden.Day 9 – Found a really unique car museum (Seal Cove Auto Museum) and then headed to Bar Harbor. Visited Thunder Hole and Sand Beach (it’s not really sand!).Day 9 – Shopping in Bar Harbor, some off to whale watch (the Denaults – with a successful whale sight-ing) and others to the top of Cadillac Mountain. Lobster opportunity again at dinner at the Chart Room and finished the evening around a bonfire at the motel.Day 10 – Lots of driving to get us to the Philbrook Inn in New Hampshire. We created quite a stir on the highway as we listened to a road crew on our chan-nel – they thought we were “bad ass and sexy” and a “Corvette pahty!!” Day 11 – Headed to Mt Washington to take the cog railroad to the top! It was pretty cold at the top, great views when the fog breaks through. Day 11 – Head out to find the Swiftwater Covered Bridge in Bath, VTDay 12 – By this time there are a few less members in our caravan, but we head out to drive the Skyline Drive. Lots of stops for photos and at one place actual-ly saw a bear cub that was close enough to get photos.Summary: About 5000 miles on our cars. Twelve days with a maximum of seven cars that changed as we went along. We stayed at about 15 hotels, ate countless pounds of lobster in varying forms (boiled, steamed, lobster rolls, lobster stew, and lobster na-chos!). We experienced the beautiful pine trees, Fall colors, wild coastlines and shared many, many laughs! When you have the opportunity, consider joining us! The trips are truly adventures and you can’t have too many adventures at this stage in our lives!

During a chance discussion at a Car Show that Bill attended, he was asked how much of the donations collected goes to the Patriot Paws, and Bill responded, 100%. The gentleman came back a bit later, and donated a check for $1,000 in behalf of the Corvette Legends. Way to go Bill. Meeting adjourned at 1:12PM. Followed by raffle. NCRS Judging-Oct. 20-22, 2016 There were a record number of Corvettes to be judged this year at the Texas Regional at the Embassy Suites in Frisco, because the NCRS National is being held in San Antonio July 9-13, 2017. If cars are to be judged at National, they must first be judged at a regional event. So, lots of Texans entered. We found Harper’s and Smith’s Corvettes being judged Friday morning at the Embassy Suites in Frisco. They both were awarded Top Flight. Lee & Jo Ann Brumit’s 1963 Saddle Tan Split-Window Coupe and 1965 Nas-sau Blue Coupe both got Top Flight. We saw Joe Maulsby judging C1, and Sherry Demmel judging 1964 interiors. Bob Demmel was sitting around, resting up to be the chairman of the National Convention. Tom Douglas was off on Friday, but judged on Thursday and again on Saturday.
