Since 2013 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has been undertaking a major Food LabellingModernization (FLM) initiative. The FLM stems from Safe Food for Canadians Act, passed in 2012, a keycomponent of Canada’s commitment to modernize the federal food safety and consumer protectionsystems.

The FLM will apply to all food sold in Canada including imported foods, with the aim of having moreconsistent, outcome-based labelling rules; aligning Canadian labelling requirements with internationalstandards; bringing greater clarity to the roles and responsibilities of consumers, industry, andgovernment; and improving service delivery, and better enabling risk-based oversight and policy andprogram development.

The CFIA has held consultations on the FLM in 2013/2014, 2015/2016 and 2017. Draft regulations arepossible as early as fall 2018. This will trigger a 75-day consultation period, suggesting final regulationscould come into effect in 2019.

We recommend that all Food and Beverage Atlantic members complete the survey. It’s in our industry’sbest interest that we take part to make sure our opinions count. Letter Survey
