Hello Everyone! Opening day for trout fi shing in the eastern Sierras is Saturday April 25th. Are you ready? Don’t forget to
renew you fi shing license with the CA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. Due to the ongoing drought here in California I would suggest making plans to fi sh your favorite spots this spring or early summer, because many waters will be either too low or too warm later in the year.
We had a great turnout at our Lower Owens River outing. Pat Jeager of Eastern Sierra Guide Service put on an outstanding fl y fi shing clinic at Pleasant Valley Campground for all the beginners, followed up by instruction on the water in the wild trout section of the Lower Owens. Even experienced members of the club benefi tted from his instruction. Thanks to everyone who made the trip, and a very special THANK YOU to Robin Johnson who hosted pizza dinner for members at her home in Mammoth Lakes on Saturday night!
The Mammoth Lakes Opener is scheduled from April 30th – May 6th and might be the ideal time in 2015 to fi sh the areas from Bishop to Bridgeport in the Eastern Sierra’s. Give our Outing Director, Mike Telles a call to check out availability in one of the condos we rent for that week. It’s a great way to meet and get to know other members of the club.
Thanks to those of you that paid your membership dues by the end of March. Your name has been entered and you’re eligible to win a custom made Winston Rod of your choice at this year’s rod raffl e. We’ll be drawing the winning members name at April’s meeting.
This month’s meeting is 7pm on Wednesday, April 22nd Cinda Howard, owner of Fly Fishing Arizona Guide Service, and past President of Desert Fly Casters, will talk about fl y fi shing opportunities in the White Mountains of Arizona. I hope to see you all there!

Trout In The Classroom: Late March and most of April has been pretty quiet for TIC. It’s been a very welcome rest from a very busy trout release schedule in late February and the first half of March when we released trout for 807 students from 17 schools-our busiest time of the year! On March 27, Jerry Searcy and Bob Kreider picked up the last batch of trout eggs for the season at the Mojave Hatchery in Victorville. After handing some off to Bill Reeves and Steve Reyes, they delivered the eggs to awaiting students and teachers in their classrooms. The eggs will probably have hatched by now and are growing rapidly in their aquaria and will be released by the students with our help in early to mid May. I would like to say a few words about receiving our clubs Life Membership Award at our club’s last meeting. It really came as a complete surprise to me and I was at a loss for words. I am touched and honored to have received this award from my fellow club members and friends. Being involved with TIC has always been very rewarding for me. It provides an opportunity to share some of the things we have learned as flyfishermen with the children of our communities, for their benefit as well as that of the community. The Deep Creek Fly Fishers have supported TIC from its inception, especially through the efforts of our TIC volunteers. These men and women are the greatest, and without their efforts throughout the years there would be no TIC. Whether it’s driving all over San Bernardino, Riverside, and even parts of LA county to deliver trout eggs, they are up for it! Organizing and supporting TIC teacher training classes is not a problem for them. Sending out yearly questionnaires for teachers and collecting the data and scheduling releases three times a year is not a problem for them. During all our releases the volunteers run the various stations and share their knowledge with the students. It’s just what we do, and we do it well! Listed below are the TIC volunteers of the DCF, past and present, in no particular order.

Pregnant Scud April 2015 Translated by Carl Wuebben
According to ANDREW PULS who earned his master’s degree as a fisheries biologist, there are sound reasons for tying the pregnant scud. Scientific research has demonstrated that orange segmented scuds suffer increased predation from trout, probably due to the crustacean’s increased visibility in the water. The orange bead in the middle of the body of the pregnant scud mimics a scud that is either full of eggs or has become infected by a parasite. The pregnant scud works especially well when you need a pattern containing a dash of flash or when fishing heavily pressured water. The fly has a unique, realistic look that most other anglers overlook.
1- Debarb hook- put bead on the hook – mount in the vise and start thread in at the rear of the hook (push bead to the eyelet). Now tie in your 5X ribbing.
2- Cut a piece of clear plastic freezer bag about a gape width (or side center to side center) then clip one end to a point and tie it in with the point forward and the rest hanging to the rear (slightly into the bend of the hook).
3- Now dub the rear body one of two ways, By hand = Pull a small length of thread out from the bobbin (about 3 inches) and put some dubbing wax on it, then twist on your dubbing with your fingers in either a clockwise or counterclock-wise direction between your thumb and index finger just pick one or the other direction and stick with it. With dubbing loop tool = bring about three inches of thread downward and put your dubbing tool on the thread then keep a hold on the tool with your left hand (for right handers) and bring your thread back up to the hook shank where your thread was started and put a few wraps back over the back part of what now is your dubbing loop. Put some dubbing in the entire loop and twist it till it’s tight. Bring your thread to the center of the hook shank. Now with either method wrap you dubbing forward to just before the halfway mark and tie and clip the end of the loop off then bring your bead up against your rear dubbed body and bring your thread over the top of the bead to the front of it and make a small dam in front of it to keep it in place better or you can whip fin-
Pattern:
How To Tie:
HOOK – Mustad C49S, Tiemco 2457 – 2487 – 2488 or any bent shank scud hook sizes #14 - #12
THREAD – Olive 8/0 (70denier)
BEAD- Orange glass bead (10/0 seed beads work from Jo-Anns)
RIB–5X clear monofilament
BODY –Light- olive sow-scud dubbing
WING – White deer hair
SHELLBACK – A Strip clipped from a plastic freezer bag

ish the rear body –clip the thread- then push your bead up against the rear body and restart your thread then a thread dam in front of the bead.
4- Put some more dubbing on your thread like in part #3 and dub the front body but keep it close to the bead and wrap it forward to about 1 ½ eyelets space from the eye and tie off the dubbing thread or loop if you used it then use a dubbing rake or bodkin to pull out the fi bers and pull them downward to the side.
5- Bring your plastic shellback over the top of the fl y and try to get as much fi bers from the dubbing to go down each side then stretch it a little and tie of in front where your thread is now. Clip off any excess plastic.
6- Now counter wrap your ribbing forward and tie off in front where your thread is now. You should space it out to have 3 sections behind the bead and 2 sections in front of it with a total of 6 with the bead. Build a small tapered head – whip fi nish it then add a little head cement or UV glue.
7- With your bodkin or a dubbing rake pick out some of the hair on the bottom of the fl y so it looks more buggy.
TIE UP A DOZEN OR TWO – AND GO FISHING *** But remember to practice

Deep Creek and Bear Creek Thermo-loggers
Gary Applebee
This was a project I had talked to Jennifer O’Brien about two years ago. We wanted to put Thermo-loggers on Bear Creek and Deep Creek. Since she was new to the area, her and I drive to different parts of Deep Creek. We walked around to show her the stream. On Bear Creek we hiked up the canyon to look at the stream. She was impressed with the pristine beauty of both streams. We also hiked and did a “Hook and Line” survey on the Santa Ana River below the confluence of Bear Creek. Jennifer couldn’t believe the quality of fishing down there.
The purpose of the loggers is to take the temperature of the creek on a continuous basis. We went to Deep Creek first and hiked up from T-6 Bridge to install the first logger. There were four volunteers from Deep Creek and four or five from FRVC if you count Bill Reeves representing both groups. The Deep Creek volunteers were Scott Hanson, Don Taylor, Bill Reeves and myself. The FRVC volunteers were Lex Willard, Dave (never got his last name), Tom Walsh, Sherri Paraon and Bill Reeves.
To install a thermo-logger you have to find a rock that is out of the current of the heavy flow. You want it to be down far enough that low flows won’t expose it either. The Logger goes into a plastic cap and base that is bought from a home improvement store. The logger is zip tied in the cap.
The white and brown part is the base. It is on the cap to the right already. They are painted brown to help hide them. We mixed two-part underwater putty and put a golf ball size to the base.
Hillary, the other DFW employee took the wire brush and would scrub the rock clean of all algae. Then Jennifer attached the logger to the rock and we had another rock that was propped against the logger until the putty dried.
We also installed a logger on a tree to get the air temperature. This was nailed to the tree.
We put two tags one on the rock above water level to tell us the number of the logger and one on a rock by the tree.
We will go back three to four times a year with a Temperature shuttle to download the data. Then Jennifer will
Deep Creek and Bear Creek Thermo-loggers (Cont.)
10
download the data with the software on her computer. She will let us know the data. This will allow the DFW to monitor the temperature of the streams.
Hopefully we can start to put the summer temperatures on the Deep Creek website to discourage people from fishing these streams when the water is too hot. These streams are to valuable to fish in the summer when the fish are trying to survive high water tempts. Since our club is named after Deep Creek we need to be the stewards of this stream if we want to have fishing closer than the Sierras.
The next week we did the same thing on Bear Creek and on the Santa Ana River above the confluence of Bear Creek. There were four of us from Deep Creek Scott Hanson, Jacob Castillo, Bill Reeves and myself. We installed one water logger on Bear Creek, one water logger on the Santa Ana River, and one air logger.
