A study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin in 2013 revealed that divorce has a stronger impact on children aged 5 and under. Younger children were more likely to feel insecure with their parental relationships than children who were over the age of 5 when the divorce occurred. The findings show that older children are more comfortable in relying on and trusting their parents. The study also emphasizes how one’s relationship with his or her parents affects his or her relationships with others.

Parents who are divorcing should strive to minimize the stress placed on their children. For example, they should not fight or discuss legal issues or speak negatively about each other in front of their children. They should also avoid disrupting the daily routine. Finally, both parents should continue to have an active role in their children’s lives.
