8th Grade Parent/Student Advisement Conferences If you were unable to attend the 8th grade parent night on November 1st, please be sure to contact me so that we can schedule your parent/student advisement conference. These conferences will take place after the Thanksgiving holiday. During the conference, we will review your child’s career interest inventory results, look at 4-year high school plan options, choose a high school endorsement (pathway), and complete the choice slip for incoming 9th graders! These conferences are required for all 8th grade parents in order to meet new state law requirements for HB 5. Conference times are available throughout the day, and several evening options are available as well. Email [email protected] to schedule your time.
Middle School Applications for UTSA PREP Program PREP program applications will be distributed to all middle school students in late November, and this year, all middle school students will be required to complete the Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) application for summer programming (though they are not required to participate in the program if accepted). We have found that students who do participate in PREP start the school year with a solid foundation of skills and content for the school year ahead. The Prefreshman Engineering Program is a mathematics-based, academic enrichment program that emphasizes the development of abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. The program helps students prepare for careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The PREP program takes place on various college campuses within San Antonio and runs Monday through Thursday, from mid-June to late July. SAISD will pay the $300 tuition fee for any students who are accepted from YWLA. Your daughter does not have to attend this program, but we strongly recommend that she consider attending if her summer schedule allows. If a middle school student completes the PREP program, they are not required to complete the YWLA summer homework. However, they will still need to read any of the assigned summer novels and complete the associated novel projects. If a student participates in only a portion of PREP and fails to complete the program, they will still be required to complete summer homework. All high school students are required to complete summer homework regardless of their PREP participation. For more information, please visit the PREP website at www.prep-usa.org. 6th grade - Science and AVID, 7th and 8th grade - Science
Naviance: College and Career Readiness Tools SAISD has begun implementing full use of the online Naviance program throughout the district. We have been utilizing this program for our college application and scholarship processes at YWLA for several years, but we are now branching out to utilize the career exploration tools as well. 8th, 9th, 11th, and 12th graders have completed some of the assessments in Naviance and have begun building a portfolio of their interests for both college and careers. 6th, 7th, and 10th graders will be introduced to the program in early Spring. If you are interested in viewing your child’s portfolio, you can have them log in to Naviance/Family Connection and show you around. There is great information available through this program!
