Welcome!Welcome to FEBS2010! For the first time a FEBS Congress will be organised jointly by two FEBS Constituent Societies. Your hosts in June 2010 will be the Swedish Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Norwegian Biochemical Society. In this way we believe that our small countries (in terms of population and therefore size of the scientific community) will bring together the critical mass to organise the meeting and attract a large number of participants. We are very grateful to our colleagues from the Baltic Countries Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia as well as Poland, Finland and Denmark, who all supported us in our task.

FEBS Congresses are showcases of the advances in the molecular bio and medical sciences. We will arrange for an attractive and exciting scientific programme that will reflect the most recent advances in molecular biology and biochemistry. At the same time FEBS Congresses serve important roles in networking between scientists from Europe and the whole world. Importantly, FEBS Congresses also serve the purpose of training young scientists and integrating them into the larger scientific community. We are dedicated to make FEBS2010 a forum for young scientists to interact with peers in the field. The Young Scientist Forum is dedicated to this purpose but also the main Congress will encompass many relevant activities.

Göteborg/Gothenburg is a most effective congress city where everything is truly in walking distance – the congress centre is located in the heart of the city. The efficient Congress organisation will allow you to focus on the scientific programme and interacting with colleagues and young researchers. Gothenburg is also a lively, friendly and open city with many attractions. The city is an excellent starting point for a summer vacation in the exotic Scandinavian sub-continent. FEBS2010 will start on the midsummer weekend, the most important celebration in the Nordic countries. Daylight almost around the clock! These attributes together with the open and friendly atmosphere will make sure that scientific interaction and communication will thrive at FEBS2010!

We are looking forward to host you and to make FEBS2010 a memorable Nordic experience.

Travel information

GothenburgGothenburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothenburg), the second largest city in Sweden, is located on the Swedish west coast with a scenic North Sea archipelago to the West and lots of forests and lakes to the East. Gothenburg is a lively city and one of Sweden’s top tourist attractions. It offers a large variety of activities within the city as well as the nature surrounding it (www.goteborg.com). Gothenburg is a proficient conference city which offers a highly developed infrastructure with all relevant facilities at true walking distance! FEBS2010 will take place in the Svenska Mässan (www.gcc.se).

Gothenburg is home of the University of Gothenburg (www.gu.se) as well as Chalmers University of Technology (www.chalmers.se) with together more than 60,000 students. The Sahlgrenska University Hospital is the largest in Scandinavia. Biochemical and molecular biology research and education are pursued on many different topics in basic and applied science at the Medical and Science Faculties at GU, at Chalmers as well as at research institutes and in industry (esp. AstraZeneca).

TravelGothenburg is located 300 km North of Copenhagen, 300 km South of Oslo and 450 km Southwest of Stockholm.

Gothenburg can be reached by direct flights from many European destinations and by single stop from anywhere in the world. There are two airports, Gothenburg-Landvetter (GOT), where most common airlines traffic as well as Gothenburg-City (Säve, GSE) where certain budget airlines fly.

It is also possible to reach Gothenburg by car (600 km from Hamburg), train, or ferry.FEBS2010 has contracted Star Alliance as official carrier. This provides discounts with numerous airlines such as Lufthansa,

SAS United, ANA and many more (www.staralliance.com). Check www.febs2010.org to find out how to book.

Practical information

Weather: At the end of June days are commonly mild to warm (18–30C). Rainy days are likely to occur. There is daylight almost around the clock.

Currency: Sweden has not adopted the Euro. The currency is the Swedish Crown (krona).

Language: The language spoken in Sweden is Swedish, but essentially everybody is able to communicate in English.

Prices: Visitors will find Gothenburg and Sweden fairly inexpensive. Prices compare well with many other places in West and Central Europe.

Dining: Gothenburg is well known for its cuisine, being home of five restaurants with a Guide Rouge star and many other interesting places. Seafood and other products of Swedish nature dominate and are combined with international influences.

Sweden and NorwaySweden (www.sweden.se) and Norway (www.visitnorway.com) are becoming more and more popular tourist destinations because of the spectacular nature, attractive cities and moderate summer climate. Did you know that the distance from Gothenburg to the North Cape is as far as to Rome?

Combine FEBS2010 with your 2010 summer vacation in Scandinavia!

The Organising Committee of the 10th Young Scientists Forum invites PhD students and

young postdoctoral fellows to participate in an interactive meeting in a pleasant and informal

environment.

The meeting is focused on the opportunities to network and discuss research, career

development and future collaborations and to be an inspiration for the European Scientists

of tomorrow.

YSF2010 is a two days arrangement preceding the 35th FEBS Congress. The programme

will include lectures by invited distinguished plenary speakers that will also be available for

informal discussions. From submitted abstracts oral presentations will be selected to give

participants the opportunity to highlight their research projects. Additional abstracts will be

presented as posters.

The Career Round Table is a highlight of the Young Scientist Forum programme. The

Round Table discussions feature topics relevant for career planning as well as applying for

research and funding opportunities. The speakers will briefly present their experience in

scientific careers development and will illustrate how their organisations promote training

of young scientists. The main aim of this round table is to stimulate discussions among the

YSF participants and to provide advice on career planning.

The Organizing Committee of the YSF2010 proudly announces that all selected participants

will be awarded grants covering the YSF meeting. Furthermore, the FEBS grants will also

cover attendance of the subsequent 35th FEBS Congress “Molecules of life“, which takes

place June 26th to July 1st.

We are grateful to FEBS for the generous support.
