YOUNGFriends ofthe EarthEurop e News Bulletin April 2009
Welcome to the April Young FoEE News Bulletin! Keep reading to find out what Young FoEE groups have been up to
recently and what they have planned for the coming months. Don't miss your chance to get active with the ACT
NOW! climate project and join Young FoEE to fight for climate justice.
Young FoEE AGMFrom 16-19th March, 15 of us from 12 countries met inBrussels, Belgium for our second Annual General Meeting.
Together we did lots of planning for 2009 and 2010, includingour climate change work in the lead up to Copenhagen (read
the ACT NOW on page 3), from how we as European youth canhave the most impact in the lead up to and during the
negotiations, to how we can converge on Copenhagen
overland from all corners of Europe.
There was also time spent planning for the Summer Camp in
Croatia from 15-22nd August, and what actions that we canrun together, as follow on from Wrap Up Climate Changethroughout this year. The Steering Group will be leading the
development of these things, but if you want to get more
involved, contact: [email protected]
Finally, we have elected a new steering group of 8 people.
They are Erik Lensell from Sweden, Ronny Hentschel from
Germany, Anna Yeliseyeva from Ukraine, Job Van Den Assem
from the Netherlands, Luka Tomac from Croatia, Christian
Debono from Malta, Malin Jacob from Norway, and JeroenRobbe from Belgium.
YFoE Norway
Action against oil drilling in Norway
For this year and next year Nature and Youth's (YFoE
Norway) priority campaign is against oil drilling outside the
beautiful Lofoten Islands, where the worlds largest stock of
cod lives, and where you will find the worlds largest cold
water coral reef.
Over the past months they have started several local groupsin a network called ‹o`olkaction against oil drilling outside
the Lofoten Islands», and took a group of representatives
from political youth parties out to the Lofoten Islands for
one week to highlight the other possibilities in Northern
Norway, besides drilling for oil.
Green answers to the financial crisis
The financial crisis also got a lot of attention in Norway. In
January, the Norwegian government came with a crisis
package, pledging 20 billion Norwegian crowns, which is
supposed to stop further unemployment and make newjobs. Nature and Youth believes that this crisis package
should focus on green jobs, such as railway or windpower.,
and so organised an action where they delivered the prime
minister, finance minister and transport minister small
green packages. The oil and energy minister was handed ahuge green crisis package.

Global 2000's Youth Group march through the streetsof Vienna
AustriaThe youth group of Global 2000 (Fa Austria) organised a
march of the homeless penguins through the streets of
Vienna.
UkraineOver past years Zelenyi Svit (Friends of the Earth Ukraine)has been runing a wide and successful national campaign
directed towards securing only verified safe
biotechnologies and strict control of food and agricultural
products derived on such technology basis since 1998.
As part of FoE Ukraine, a student youth group have been
doing several awareness raising activities on the issue of
GMOs, including running a lecture series in schools and
universities, spreading the leaflets and stickers.
Upcoming Network Activities
J MA (Young FoE Netherlands)J MA has been very busy running the Vote Smart, Vote Climate
project, in the lead up to the European Parliament Elections on
the 4th of June. The aim is to raise the consciousness of young
people in The Netherlands about the climate-programme of
the Dutch Euro-parliament candidates and parties, so that theywill take into account 'the climate' when voting. The project is
made up of three main parts:
1.Developing a green 'Vote -Match"This is a voting tool available on our website which will guide
visitors to the party they should vote for, based on their, and
the political party's, green ideals. We are doing this in
co-operation with a big NGO who has the knowledge and
money to conduct proper research for the content.
2.Organising a debate tourIn co-operation with the study-unions of different universities
all around the country we are organising debates about the EU(elections) and climate issues. Depending on the the specialty
of the study-union, we are developing statements and
inviting speakers (politicians, public figures, young
people,..). At the same time we will be getting people to
do the 'vote-match" on lap-tops.
3. Training Youth AmbassadorsTen young people have been selected to become Youth
Ambassadors for this project, and have been trained in
how to interview EP-candidates and film these
interviews. They will be the face of the campaign and
will be approaching local and other media. The films
they make will be linked to our website and go on
YouTube, and will also be shown during the breaks at
the debates.
All is developing very fast and so we ore busy busy busywith it. We hope our project might inspire you to dosomething in your country too on the EP elections!!!
At\YFoE NorwayThis summer Nature and Youth will be organsing a summer
camp on one of the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway.
There will be a lot of different activities such as boat trips,
concerts, a football cup, debates and workshops on oil,
cli mate change and COP15. We hope that people from all
over Europe would like to come. The Environmental Minister,
Erik Solheim, is coming. Are you?

Applications are OPEN for our climate project 2009!
Young FoEE and BUNDjugend have now launched
ACT NOW! THE YOUNG FRIENDS OF THE EARTH CLIMATE PROJECT
iWe are looking for 30 young Europeans who will take part
in training to become a part of the YoungFoEE Climate
Team, and will organise actions and events for other young
people on climate change throughout 2009.
2009 is THE pivotal year for climate change. In December,
governments from around the world will meet in
Copenhagen to negotiate and agree measures to stop
cli mate change. Before then we need to be loud and clear
that this is our future and our planet that they are
negotiating, and that we as young people demand justice
for the people and the planet. For this reason Young FoEE
and BUNDjugend have launched the ACT NOW project.
As part of the Young FoEE Climate Team you will take part
in a training event in Bonn, Germany from 2-7th June, and
in December come to Copenhagen as part of the
International Youth Delegation. Between June and
December you will go back to your own country and
community and organise activities and events for other
young people on climate change and the fight for climate
justice.
