Broadway ExtrasBroadway ExtrasBLUE MAN GROUP CREATESVAUDEVILLE FOR 21ST CENTURYNo one knows how to make a more inspired

mess than BLUE MAN GROUP.Whether they’re beating on drums and

generating a kaleidoscopic spray of airbornepaint or chomping out a Cap’n Crunchsymphony, the bald-and-blue charactersapproach each messy, noisy enterprise with theexpertise and determination of children.

And the audience responds with grin-inducing joy and howls of laughter.

You might say that BLUE MAN GROUPis child’s play for adults. At first glance, a mess –but looking closer, it’s far from one. Don’tconfuse child’s play with childishness.

“We have things that we think about, andthey express themselves in these weird ways,”says Phil Stanton, co-founder of BLUE MANGROUP with Matt Goldman and Chris Wink.“We’re usually looking at things from the pointof community or relationships. We’re trying tosay something about the power of a group.”

Goldman adds, “Preserving a childlikewonder is definitely one of the things behindwhat we do. We believe that we’re all creativebeings, and creativity can look a lot ofdifferent ways. We’re trying to get to anecstatic, euphoric, emotional place.”

Think of the show as vaudeville for the21st century. The Blue Men – and a fewmusicians – offer an array of flights of fancy, ranging from primitive to sophisticated, in avariety show quite unlike any other.

Many think that being bald and blue isputting on a mask of sorts, says Goldman, but it’s the opposite: “Once you strip awaythe hair, the skin tone, the gender, the ears, and have no particular style of clothing, what’s left? It’s really the rawest, purest formof what’s essentially human.”

The Blue Man uses every facet of hisbeing to engage the audience in situations andideas and behavior and sights and sounds that

intrigue him. And he does so without everspeaking. “Talking is so limiting,” says Goldman.“We talked once, and it was horrible. But we don’tthink of the Blue Man as a mute. We think of himas someone who has chosen not to say anything.”

The show is not without words. LED screensdisplay a series of messages designed to make theaudience laugh and/or think. An authoritative voiceexplains the intricacies of modern plumbing andchoreography and technology.

People in the front rows immediately feel apart of the proceedings since they get slickers toprotect their clothes from paint splatterings andsuch. The Blue Men are also know for theenormous amount of eye contact they make withthe audience, both from the stage and byinteracting with them.

For Goldman, Stanton and Wink, thefinale unites the audience in a magical way.

“It’s all about the connection,” saysStanton. “Even though technology has made itso that we don’t have to have that liveexperience, there’s something about ourhumanity that will always need it.”

when Opera Carolina’s educational touringcompany, Opera Express, hits the road onceagain this spring, entertaining andenlightening young audiences in more thantwenty Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementaryschools, as well as a dozen counties in NorthCarolina, South Carolina and NorthernGeorgia.

The engagingcast of locally basedopera singersperforms thechildren’s opera TheBilly Goats Gruff, amodern adaptation ofthe famous children’stale that tells the storyof the three BillyGoats and the bullyOsmin. Online teaching tools and excerptsfrom the opera are available for teachers andstudents alike to gain greater insight into theopera art form. Threatened by another year ofdeepening budget cuts to CMS, OperaCarolina secured private and corporate supportto protect its 25-year history of educationprogramming in CMS. Opera Express wasrescued by the collective vision of OperaCarolina’s Board of Directors, businesses andindividual donors who understand the value

and future benefits of early arts education. With a generous grant of $25,000 from

the Duke Energy Foundation, Opera Carolinahas raised a total of $55,500 from generousindividuals and corporate sponsors includingAmerican Tire Distributors, BB&T, The DukeEnergy Foundation, The Hearst Corporation,Husqvarna, King & Spalding, Lance, Inc., andWomble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice. These

funds supplement a$10,000 grant from theArts & Science Council.

“Opera Carolina isprofoundly grateful tothese sponsors who havestepped forward todemonstrate such a far-reaching and enduringcommitment to arts andeducation,” said GeneralDirector James Meena.

“Funding programs like Opera Express allowsstudents from CMS’ diverse neighborhoods toexperience live opera in their own schools.Eighty percent of Opera Express performancesthis spring will be in CMS FOCUS Schools.”

Since 1971, Opera Express has servedmore than one million children with suchfavorites as The Billy Goats Gruff, An AesopOdyssey, Pinocchio, How Nanita Learned toMake Flan, and more. Would you eat them at the Symphony?Would you eat them with a…hmmm…

What rhymes with Symphony? The CharlotteSymphony Orchestra brings the deliciouslydelightful rhymes of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs andHam to audiences of all ages at its upcomingLollipops concert on March 26.

The Symphony isteaming up with theartists of “ReallyInventive Stuff” for theconcert. Inspired by thelegends of vaudeville andsilent film, “ReallyInventive Stuff”combines music, miming, and puppetry to open theimaginations of itsaudiences as it creativelyshares some of literature’sbest tales.

Green Eggs andHam features KimberlySchroeder as the Soprano, and MichaelBoudewyns as the persistent Sam-I-Am. “We’vedesigned this so that the soprano, or the personwho does not like green eggs and ham, is livingin kind of a black and white world,” saysBoudewyns. “And in contrast, Sam-I-Am is verycolorful. I just love Dr. Seuss. I think that whatDr. Seuss has given the world is a giant gift, andall of this is in celebration of Dr. Seuss.”

Boudewyns is the co-founder of “ReallyInventive Stuff.” He has performed withtheater companies around the nation and has

been creating literature-based performancessince 1997. Kimberly Schroeder is currently theco-director of the Delaware Dance Company’sYouth Dance Ensemble. She has been in manyproductions, including Fiddler on the Roof, LaBoheme and Cinderella.

This orchestral adaptation of the classicDr. Seuss tale features musicby Robert Kapilow.“Kapilow’s score for GreenEggs and Ham is a lot like‘Looney Tunes’ music, wherethe scores are like patchwork– constantly changingmelodies and illustrating acartoon,” says Boudewyns.“The music catches you bysurprise and really forces youto pay attention.”

The concert is sure tobe fun for all, Boudewynssays: “We want to make surethat a sense of playfulness

exists. People forget that when you see aperformance, you are there to play. Actorsperform in a play; musicians play instruments–audiences need that same experience. Theyneed the opportunity to play.”

Find out how much you like green eggsand ham on Saturday, March 26 in the BelkTheater. A pre-concert festival begins at 10a.m. and puts the musical experience into kids’hands, with crafts, activities, and instrumentexploration in The Symphony Guild ofCharlotte’s “Musical Petting Zoo.”

Spotlight, a series focusing on womenchoreographers, takes to the Knight Theater

stage April 28-30. For the first time in itshistory, Dance Theatre is devoting a series towomen choreographers, including a Companypremiere of The Golden Section by dance iconTwyla Tharp. Choreographers Jacqulyn Buglisiand Emery LeCrone are also featured.

The New York Timescalled Twyla Tharp “anAmerican artist of the firstorder” and wrote that she has“famously broken down thebarriers between ballet andmodern dance, fusing theminto a genre specifically herown.”

TheGolden Sectionwas choreographed byTharp to four separatelynamed musical compositions by DavidByrne, a founding member of the musicalgroup Talking Heads. Dressed in dancer/athleteget-ups of burnished golds, as if they were allOlympic champions, the seven male and sixfemale dancers sail, soar and tear through theair of the stage’s golden, glowing light.

When describing The Golden SectionTharp said, “the dancers stormed the stage witha new, positive energy” and anything that

wasn’t sheer dancing “disappeared into aharmonious wash of light, costumes, music andmovement.”

Legendary choreographer MarthaGraham’s influence can be seen in Requiem, apiece by former Graham Company principaldancer Jacqulyn Buglisi. Set to Gabriel Faure’s“Requiem,” Buglisi uses five female dancers, costumed in long layered silk skirts bycostumer A. Christina Giannini. According toBuglisi, who choreographed the ballet in 2001,the main themes of Requiem are man’svulnerabilities and peace.

North Carolina native and former NCDance Theatre 2 dancer Emery LeCroneis creating a new work for Spotlight.LeCrone was born in Greensboro, N.C.,

and studieddance at the

University of NorthCarolina School of the Arts

before joining Dance Theatre. It wasduring her time at Dance Theatre when she

began choreographing. JenniferDunning ofThe New

York Timescalled LeCrone’s choreography “…a delightfulwhole, exploring innovative partnering as wellas the ways spinning full-throttle movementcan echo and incorporate the planes of spacearound it.”

Born in Kalamata, Greece, Yannibegan to play the piano at age six. Herefused formal lessons because he felt thata certain freedom with the keys might becrushed under the weight of structuredlearning.

His childhood in Greece and his lovefor his native country gave Yanni hisinspiration to compose such songs as“Santorini,” “Nostalgia” and “Acroyali.”

Fourteen albums later, Yannicontinues to amaze audiences across theglobe.

The multi-Grammy®-nominatedcomposer will play songs from Truth OfTouch, his latest album, and selectionsfrom his decades-long career.

“Truth Of Touch is more electronicthan acoustic,” says Yanni. “There are a lotof fresh sounds and rhythms on thisalbum. You will feel a lot of Yanni on this, but there is a departure from what youmight expect.”

Yanni says he is looking forward tothe next stage of his evolution. “To makethings happen in life, you have to havefaith and passion,” he says. “Right now isthe best time of my life.”
