14Young Carers & Young Adult Carers News

Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2020 issue of Carers News.

Suite in Margaret Powell House, 439 Midsummer Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes, MK9 3BN.

A big thank to everyone who has fundraised for us. We are really grateful for your support which helps us to carry on providing our vital work.

I am also very pleased to announce that Carers MK has been awarded funding from Global’s Make Some Noise which will go towards funding our Young Adult Carers service. You might of heard two of our young carers being interviewed on LBC and Heart radio last October raising awareness of what it is like being a young carer and why it is vital to provide support to young carers.

Would you like to win a spring hamper? Enter our competition on page 3 and see how many tulips you can spot throughout the newsletter – good luck and have a wonderful summer.

In this issue, you’ll find lots of useful information including our Support Group Diary on pages 8-9 and Training and Workshops on pages 10-11. The health article for this issue is about “Staying Steady”. As we become older, we are more likely to become unsteady which increases the risk of falling. Therefore it is important that we understand the risk factors and how to keep ourselves safe.

Did you know you can register for free, additional practical support from Anglian Water’s Priority Services? Carers MK is working in partnership with Anglian Water to provide carers with information about Anglian Water’s Priority Services Register. Details on this service can be found on page 7.

Save the date! Carers MK’s Annual Celebration Event will be held on Tuesday 9th June 2020, 10am – 1pm at Margaret Powell

Meet Our New Staff Members

Alison CressyHi, my name is Alison Cressy. I have worked with children in Primary Schools for 25 years which has been extremely rewarding. I am really excited about my new role as Activity Worker for Young Carers MK and look forward to working with you all.

Shamil ShahHi, my name is Shamil Shah and I have recently joined as a Young Carers Support Worker. My passion for working with young carers developed before going to university where I worked as a tutor teaching children, who often had Autism or ADHD, Maths and English. After graduating from university in 2018 with a BA HONS in Criminology and Criminal Justice, I worked with young offenders as a custodial care officer helping reform their offending behaviour. I am very excited about this new journey within the charity sector.

Caroline Sterling

My name is Caroline Sterling and I have joined Carers MK as an Older Carers Support Worker.

I have worked in Adult Social Care for most of my life, most recently working for Milton Keynes Council as a Team Leader in Home 1st. In this role I came across many unpaid carers and I am looking forward to learning more about the support that is available to these exceptional people.

Lydia RolphHi, I’m Lydia, a new Young Carers Support Worker. I graduated from university with a degree in Childhood and Youth Studies. Previously I have worked in a pastoral team in an upper school and with children in care. I am very pleased to be a part of the team and am excited for the challenges and experiences to come.

Debby HulmesMy name is Debby Hulmes and I am an Adult Carers Support Worker. I have worked in the voluntary sector for most of my working life and enjoy supporting people through different situations that life often throws at us. I am interested in learning more about the challenges faced by carers and exploring how we can best support those who are undertaking this vital, but often overlooked, role in our society.

1 Don’t get thirsty If you are thirsty this can cause unsteadiness as well as other problems such as headache, dizziness, tiredness, constipation. It is important to ensure an adequate fluid intake (6-8 glasses a day).

2 Take care of your feet Problems with feet, especially anything that causes pain, can affect balance. Ensure that well-fitted shoes and slippers are worn.

3 Manage your medicines Certain medicines can make people feel faint or affect balance. A pharmacist can review your medications with you.

4 Be active Take regular exercise. This can be for a short time a couple of times a day.

Staying Steady

Staying Steady WorkshopLiz Adams, Falls Prevention Co-ordinator from CNWL will be at Carers MK to share ideas about staying steady and to answer any questions you may have.

Thursday 14th May, 10am – 12pm

Please contact Carers MK on 01908 231703 or email us at [email protected] to book a place on this information workshop.

Staying Steady when walking and transferring is important for healthy ageing and enjoying quality of life. There are a number of risk factors that contribute to being unsteady and increasing the risk of falling.

Staying Steady Milton Keynes (CNWL Falls Service) has put together 8 helpful tips for staying steady:

If you are concerned about your walking and that you are unsteady you can refer yourself to the falls service in Milton Keynes. You can ring the falls single point of access to make a referral on 01908 686751 or visit www.mkfalls.co.uk/referral-form

5 Check your home Make sure the home is hazard-free and well lit. Organise belongings so that you are not at risk of tripping over any wires, clutter or loose or frayed carpets.

6 Check your walking aids Check for worn ferrules, check the brakes and height of the aid.

7 Check your eyes and hearing Regular sight tests and reporting ear pain or difficulties with hearing can identify problems that could affect balance and co-ordination.

8 Eat healthily Vitamin D is important for muscles and bones; calcium is important for your bone health.

Global’s Make Some Noise FundWe have been lucky enough to be awarded funding from Global’s Make Some Noise. The money raised will go towards funding the Young Adult Carers programme.

As a result of working with Global we had the opportunity to appear on national radio; LBC. This was a great opportunity to raise awareness of young carers. We took two young carers along for the day in London who spoke on the radio with LBC’s breakfast show host Nick Ferrari. They were both so fantastic that Heart Radio called down to ask if the young carers could go on the show with Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston. I think we have some future celebrities on our hands!

We would like to thank everyone at Global who made this wonderful day possible. Eden and Ryan had the ‘best day ever’ and of course they were both superstars!

Young Carers MK NewsCarers Discount CardAll carers including young carers can apply for a Carers MK Carers Discount Card. This card gives you discount on activities. We have recently added Safari MK and Blake’s Braids to our list and are adding all the time.

How to applyPlease contact the office for a consent form and we then need a picture of you, head and shoulders only. We will then send you out your carers discount card.

How do I get discount? When you go to the activity or try to book a service you need to show your card or give them a code for the discount. Codes are issued with the card.

We look forward to a productive year with various opportunities for the young adult carers to join in with.

We had our first Steering Group meeting in December and another in February. The Steering Group will give the young adult carers the opportunity to help guide and prioritise groups, activities and opportunities that would be important to them. We welcome other young adult carers to be part of the Steering Group.

We have arranged for a great opportunity for some of the young carers to be part of the ‘Workpays’ training programme funded by the European Union Social Fund. The programme is aimed at young people aged 16-24 who are not in education, employment or training. The NEET programmes are designed to build confidence and teach new skills that will take the individual on a journey towards employment or full-time study. We hope to support our young people to build in confidence and inspire them to look towards possible future goals.

We have potential volunteering opportunities for our young adult carers for our new Curiosity Club starting soon. It will be running once a fortnight during term times on Saturday mornings for a few hours. The aim of Curiosity Club is to enable young people to access exciting science, technology and creative learning opportunities that they would not usually get.

We were given an exciting opportunity for some young adult carers to have their voices heard at the ‘Have your say!’ weekend residential event in January, which was run by The Children’s Society. They are currently planning the Young Carers Festival for 2020 which will be the 21st birthday and it gives our young adult carers the opportunity to be part of this exciting event.

Young Carers ActivitiesPlease could we remind all parents that it is your responsibility to ensure you return confirmation of an activity. If it is not returned, your child does not have a place on an activity. Please do not turn up for an activity without confirmation.

Getting to ActivitiesWe are limited as to how many volunteer drivers we have and how many spaces we can accommodate. Please also explore other options of getting your child to an activity before you request transport. Other options could be walking, taking the bus or asking a friend/relative.
