Volume 20 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 17, 2020

A MESSAGE OF HOPE DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Everything that God allows to come our way is always with a purpose. We are here to be witnesses of the Covid-19 pandemic, to tell the next generation who will hear it as a myth.

What do we take from the pandemic crisis?

We have come to realize that we are all connected as one family of God. We all have to carry one another as we are a simple community of human connection. We had created a work-a-holic community where we had no time for each other. With the “Stay Home Order,” families are now reunited. Parents are at home with their children, and spouses have more time for each other. This is the time to rebuild our families full of love, peace, and hope.

Despite of the darkness we are experiencing, we are able to see light because we are fighting the enemy (Covid-19) together with hope and love. With hope and faith, we will soon get over it. God is with us in the battle-field.

As a famous saying goes; "A butterfly flapping its wings in Japan, can cause a hurricane in Illinois." Any of us, however small and helpless we may feel, can spark unimagined changes in our community. The “Stay Home Order” looks like a small request but has a great impact on protecting the entire community. PLEASE STAY HOME!!

I used to think that things that can change the world were like big bombs, earthquakes, and hurricanes, but now I have realized that even the things we take for granted can change people's hearts world-wide.

"Whatever is, was long ago given its name, and the nature of man is known, and cannot contend in judgment with one who is stronger than he. Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, all things are vanity!”

(Ecclesiastes 6:10, 12:8)

As believers we look forward to this Easter Season, inspired by the sacrifices Jesus made for us for the forgiveness of our sins. This gives us hope and happiness. God is with us through our trials.

PEACE AND BLESSINGS!

Sister Rose Nakibuuka (IHMR) Mary Mother of Divine Grace Parish

Call for Volunteers

The Archdiocese is preparing a plan to guide the parishes in the reopening of our churches. The plan will not be available until earlier next week. However, we do know that the Archdiocese believes the plan will require participation of both parish staff and parishioners. We do not know what the plan will entail, so we are not asking you to volunteer in the reopening process at this time. Rather, we would like to create a roster of potential volunteers that we can contact via email once the plan is published. We would provide you with a copy of the plan for your review, and then ask you whether you would like to volunteer and assist in the process. We believe that the above step will allow us to open our churches as soon and as safely as possible. If you wish to join the group of potential volunteers please send an email to Karen Luciano at [email protected]. Please include your full email address in the body of your email. THANK YOU and we look forward to working with you!

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my Soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. Although you have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Because we can’t go to Mass…

Catholics are encouraged to make a “spiritual communion”. St. John Paul II writes that “it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of practice of “spiritual communion” which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. Saint Teresa of Jesus wrote: “When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by the love God will be greatly impressed on you”” (Ecclesia Eucharistia, no.34).

Catholics are also encouraged to watch local TV for Sunday Mass. Mercy Home celebrates Mass every Sunday at 9:30am on WGN, Chicago.

Our parish website; www.marymotherofdivinegrace.org has a link to Masses recorded at Divine Infant Jesus Church and Divine Providence Church. There are also links to the Cardinal’s Masses.

This week Fr. Dan will be celebrating the 6th Sunday of Easter on May, 17, 2020.

Where did Mary live after the Resurrection?

Scripture and tradition give us a few possibilities. After Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, where did his mother go? While scripture doesn’t give us an exact address, it did leave behind several clues. It is generally accepted that at the time of Jesus’ death, his foster-father Joseph had already passed away from this life to the next. This would leave Jesus as the family member primarily in charge of his aging mother.

When he was about to die on the cross Jesus appointed one of his disciples to take care of her.

When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (John 19:26-27) Most scripture scholars agree with a tradition that the “beloved disciple” was St. John the Evangelist.

Initially it appears that John took care of her in Jerusalem, as it is mentioned in the book of Acts.

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. (Acts 1:12-14)

This means that at least following the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, Mary lived with the apostles in Jerusalem. According to one tradition, this is where Mary lived the rest of her life, walking the “way of the cross” every day, retracing the steps of her son. In this tradition Mary’s assumption took place in Jerusalem and was witnessed by the apostles.

To this day there exists a church built near the Mount of Olives that is said to be place of Mary’s burial and is venerated by the Eastern Orthodox Church. There is also another location in Jerusalem called the Church of the Dormition, which is maintained by Benedictine monks. Both sites claim to be the site of Mary’s assumption into Heaven.

On the other hand, there is a tradition that places John the Evangelist in the city of Ephesus. Many believe that since John lived in this city that the Virgin Mary lived with him and her assumption took place there as well. This was later reinforced by certain private revelations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich in the 19th century, which placed the Virgin Mary’s house in Ephesus.

A first-century house was discovered in Ephesus by Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey in 1891, along with the ruins of a church built on top of it in the 4th century. This site has been a popular place of pilgrimage for many people, including several popes of the last century.

In the end, wherever Mary lived during those final days of her life, when she was assumed into Heaven, she became our mother and remains the Mother of the Church, always interceding for us before her son. Philip Kosloski | May 10, 2018

May 17 *SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER*

We are all connected. John tells us in the Gospel that through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, we are not orphaned. We are connected with our fellow believers and with God. Before that, we hear that Philip, whose commissioning was proclaimed last Sunday, decides to go to Samaria, of all places. Recall that Jesus purposely chose a Samaritan to illustrate what it means to be a neighbor, caring for the injured man who had been ignored by his own people. The Samaritans welcome Philip and accept God’s word. As a sign of unity within the early church, Peter and John, two of the Twelve, travel to Samaria to call down the Holy Spirit on all those who had been baptized into the faith. The Samaritans, once regarded as outcasts, are now connected to the disciples, the apostles, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. What is the glue that holds all of them (and us) together? It is love. It is love that leads one to want to keep Jesus’ commandment's, love that binds each person the Trinity, love that reveals the presence of Jesus to others. Indeed, in this love we “sanctify Christ as Lord in (our) hearts.” (1 Peter 3:15).
