In the Image of God and His Likeness

There’s a problem that we find difficult to identify ourselves about being created in the image and

likeness of God. Since God is invisible, it is difficult to understand how the invisible God could

have an image. When we search for the things of life, those deep and profound questions like, who

am I? Why am I here? What am I to do? What is the meaning of my life? In order to understand

ourselves, we must first understand our relationship to God in order to understand who we are. It is

our responsibility to understand our life. It is an invitation to see who we are: at the core of our being,

each one of us has the identity of being a child of God, made in his image and likeness, redeemed by

the precious blood of His Son, Jesus, and destined to enjoy eternity with him in heaven. That’s who

we are. As Pope St. John Paul II taught, “being is more important than having and doing.” In Genesis

1:26, God said, “Let Us make man in our image, according to our likeness”. Most importantly, God

made us like Him in qualities of mind, such as abstract thought, emotion, creativity and planning.

John 1:18 says of Him, “No one has seen God at any time” and Jesus said, “You have neither heard

His voice at any time, nor seen His form” (John 5:37). “Rather, these were appearances of Jesus

Christ before His human life. Again, though, the Father and Christ share the same image and likeness.

Then, fully in God’s likeness, we will be able to fulfill our awesome responsibility of exercising

dominion over, of assisting Him in managing, the vastness of His creation”.

The truth is that we are creative because God is creative. Every human makes things. Artists makethings with paint. Poets, writers, philosophers and lawyers make things with ideas and the compellinguse of words. Doctors make people healthier; consultants make organizations better. Manufacturersmake things with raw materials; chefs make things with fruits, vegetables, meats and spices. Everyhuman has the capacity to make things, to create, because we are all made in the image of a creativeGod. We all know we are not gods. If we are honest, we know we often think we are the god of ourown lives, even if we would never admit it. The truth is, we are not God. But we are godlike. Thereis a heavy stress today on individualism: my needs, my wants, my preferences, my convenience andmy time are most important. If we try to understand who we are in God’s eyes, and in relation toother creatures and all of creation, we will sense that there are certain duties and obligations thatsimply flow from who we are.

Today there are too many “say”: “I want the things the world has to offer and I don’t want to give

them up. I want to do what I want to do, when I want to do it, regardless of what it is. I have the

right, the freedom to choose what it is I want to do”. Whatever comes, life is good. And the thing

that makes a person most aware of its goodness is to know God. To know God is to live. If we think

God’s way and live His way, we will be freed from most of the unnecessary things. We can live with

quite power. The power of God is there to help us. God is good. Believe in God, in Jesus Christ and

in oneself and get strength. In all of creation, only human beings are made in God’s image. This is a

great privilege and it gives us dignity. We are intellectual, we can think, reason, and solve problems;

we are relational, we can give and receive real love; and we have a moral consciousness, we can

discern right from wrong, which makes us accountable to God. This accountability is in relationship

with God, with human and in prayer.

MONTFORT VILLA, BAGAHA.

The month of September is commemorated as Hindi month and 14th September as Hindi

Divas. Another important event of the month was the Teacher’s day which we celebrated

on 5th September. The Hindi Club organised different academic activities conducting

competitions, presentation on importance of Hindi and major exponents and writers in Hindi

literature in the morning assembly for first fortnight. The school cabinet took a lot of interest

to organise the Teachers’ day in a fitting manner. The team worked unitedly for over two

weeks to perform a two-hour cultural entertainment and paying respect to the teachers.

The celebrations of Teachers’ Day and observance of the Hindi Divas on 14th September,

with award to all the winners of different competitions gave way to more serious academic

activity, the half yearly examination. The examination went on till the end of the month.

Bettiah Local CRI meeting was held on the 27th September in our campus. Fifty Religious of

Bettiah Diocese attended this half-day program. It was the first time the CRI meeting was

held in Montfort Villa, Bagaha and many of the participants were visiting this place for the

first time too. Ten years of our existence here now has the required facilities and many of

the Religious and priests wanted to visit the place and see our mission, though many of our

Province’s Brothers are yet to see the place and always saying too far a visit to Bagaha!

ST. JOSEPH’S KONBIR-NOATOLI

VIDYADEEP COLLEGE, BENGALURU

Though we are engaged in our academic activities, we have many   activities other than our

studies. We are blessed with different activities such as seminars and celebrations. We had a

faculty seminar on 22nd August, which was based on the present encyclical of Pope Francis.

“Laudato Si” which was attended by many Brothers, Priests and Sisters of various religious

congregations. After listening to the various talks, many of us felt sorry for our nature since we are

harming our mother earth for our selfish motive. Having listened to the talk on “LaudatoSi” many

of us felt that every religious should take interest in protecting the nature.

The  customs and traditions have always been a part of our Indian culture. Our C.R.I. Institute

also is blessed with different cultural and linguistic groups. And this brings a lot of celebrations in

the Institute. We had an opportunity of celebrating Karma festival on 29th August. Though the

number of Chhotanagpur Brothers is small, we had a beautiful cultural programme which was well

appreciated by the Brothers and Sisters. We had a good meal after the cultural programme which

became one of the memorable days in C.R.I.

We had a  Montfortian get-together on 22nd August at Montfort Spirituality Centre, Bangalore.

Bro. Xavier Antony, CMSF, our Principal was the  guest speaker. He made a comparison

of the 3 Montfortian families with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as “Trinity”. He also

mentioned the great works that are being done by the Montfortian families. After his talk

many Priests, Brothers and Sisters appreciated him for his inspirational talk.

CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL, CUTTACK

We are busy painting and renovating the school building. Brothers’

dining hall was given a new look recently. A drinking water

plant with water coolers, is installed in the campus. It supplies

sufficient purified drinking water to the students. Bro. Thomas was

with us for few a days and he left for Ranchi on 1st of September.

On 4th September Bro. Pratap went to Noatoli to attend the Brothers’

gathering. Unfortunately he had an adventurous train journey. When

he got up from his sleep he realized that he was in a strange land,

not in the land promised by the Indian Railways. He missed Bano

station and went hundreds of kilometres ahead of Ranchi. By late

evening he managed to locate Noatoli after travelling by a few local

buses. Thank God he returned to Cuttack on 8th September.

On 6th September Bro. Johnson went to Kolkata to attend the

Counsellor training workshop. It was a national level workshop

organized by the Institute of Counsellor Training Research and Consultancy

(ICTRC), New Delhi in collaboration with Jindal University. There were

80 selected Principals from different cities who attended the

programme. The Principal of Loretto School, Kolkata and Bro. Johnson

were the only Religious Principals who attended programme. It was

an enriching experience to be part of the programme.

Half yearly exam started on 9th September and it continued till 23rd.

Teachers are now busy evaluating the answer scripts and giving results.

Parent – teachers’ meeting will be held on 17th Oct and the Report Cards

will be given on that day. On 26th Bros. Clement, Edmond, Berchmans,

Sylvester Surin and Sushil made a quick visit on their way back from

Bangalore. They travelled to Ranchi in the same night.

The festival of Onam was celebrated in Cuttack on 27th Sept. It was

jointly celebrated by all, irrespective of various religious faiths. Nearly

five hundred people gathered for the sumptuous Onam meal and to

witness the colourful cultural programme in KVK auditorium. Bro.

Johnson was the Chief Guest and Chief Speaker of the Onam celebration.

The 2nd T20 match between India and South Africa will be played in

Cuttack on 5th October. The entire city is in a festive mood to watch

the short format of the game. This time the Indian Cricket team will

be taken care of in Cuttack by Bro. Johnson & co. He is appointed as

the Chairman of the organizing committee by the Cricket Association.

The first   terminal exams were held from 19 to 26th August. Thirty teacher trainees from

Sitagraha are having their teaching experience. The construction of three classrooms is over.

White washing  and painting works are going on and we hope to start classes from November in

these classrooms. We have purchased a photocopy machine and our trips to Hazaribag are

reduced. The Children’s Park is ready to be inaugurated on  30th September. Desks and benches

are being provided for students of class II to IV .  A big thanks to Loyola Community for their

help and concern.

Bro.Markose was suffering from Dengue fever and was admitted in Koderma for three days. He

had been to Mysore, Delhi and Bangalore to help the students in admission and scholarship. Bro.

Arogyam took classes to the I.T.I students of M.T.C. from 19th August to 15th September. He is

now taking classes in Sitagarha novitiate.

MONTFORT SCHOOL , HATHIAGONDA

As usual, the school children could be seen ever active on  the Teachers’ Day. In order tomake the celebration a memorable one, they took  all possible initiatives. Hence a series

of consultations and proposals  took place. So also here in M.V.D. candidates  don’t lagbehind. They also could be seen engaging  themselves even during the leisure time. They preparedsome entertaining cultural programmes  for the Day but fortunately or unfortunately the ProvinceDay  was fixed on the same  day. So they were disappointed  for not materializing it.

Bro.Telesphore Kullu was complaining of having fever , headache  and cough. So he  consulteda doctor.  As per  his advice  medicine  was taken and he got well and  joined his normal duties.In those days the weather  was  very warm, even then he continued his   regular work  but aftertwo days  again he got back the same complaint.  This time he was admitted  in “SEVANILAYAM HEALTH CENTRE” Ara Gate, Namkom.  He was treated there for a week andis back home . The next day he rejoined duty. Bro. Telesphore  Kullu is privileged  to join in theMONTFORTIAN PILGRIMAGE  squad. So these days he is busy   obtaining  his passportready.

 Very often the  electricity supply is very poor and  irregular. We have inverter set but not sohelpful. So we   got a new set. So it is a great help in exercising our regular duties  withoutinterruption.

The Auxiliary Bishop Rev. Telesphore Bilung SVD is coming for his first Pastoral  visit to ourparish Bhitha in the last week of September 2015. As  per his program, he desires to meet withthe community members of each Religious Institution  of the parish and at the end collectivelywith all the superiors of the Institutions.P.F.D. in-charge Bro. Mike Jathrome visited  us  this month. He devoted his valuable few hoursof his time with us especially with the new candidates who have joined this year. We extend ourthank for  sharing his precious guidance and encouragement.

September was a busy month for us. Teacher’s Day was celebrated with due respect.A colorful cultural programme was organized by the students. They honored the teacherswith gifts, prayers and best wishes. It was an occasion for the students to widen theirappreciation towards them. The teachers were very grateful to the students anddistributed sweets to them.

One of the main highlights of this month was the “BROTHERS GET-TOGETHER” onthe 5th and 6th September 2015 at our Mother House, Noatoli. The event was such thatthe Brothers participated wholeheartedly in it. The Brothers of both the communities,(Montfort Bhavan and Montfort Niketan) and Bro. Provincial Superior worked very hardto make this meet a success. Hearty congratulation to them! We had very stimulatingsharing sessions. All of us felt that challenges in life are indeed many. We deserveappreciation in many fields. Weaknesses are also galore. In the concluding sessionBro. Provincial Superior clearly pointed out that “CHALTA HAI” spirit in us now “NAHINCHALEGA”. He said that the remedy to all these challenges is Life of Authenticity. Healso encouraged and said that in spite of limitations if we keep on fighting against thenegative forces, we will achieve the goal.

In Ranchi as well as all over Jharkhand state there is no rain for more than threeweeks and this has resulted in drought-like situation. All, particularly the farmers areeager to get rain. Immediate rain can save the situation.

All these days Bro. Deonis Tigga, Headmaster of Middle School is busy in giving practiceto MUNNA FOOTBALL TEAM. The team will participate in football tournaments inRanchi and around the place. This team is also preparing to go to Noatoli to participatein late Fr. Bossyte S.J. memorial football tournament. We hope that the time and energyBrother is giving will be fruitful. We wish success to our MUNNA FOOTBALL TEAM!

We celebrated Teacher’s day on 4th September. We had a beautiful Eucharisticcelebration along with St. Joseph’s school. After the Eucharistic celebration we

had cultural program; the last program was a thrilling football match between students vsteachers. Students were defeated   by 2-3.

On 6th September 2015, Montfort Sr. Sec. School got the affiliation from CBSE Board,Delhi. Bro. Sudhakar, the Principal  had encamped for almost 8 to 10 days in Delhi inorder to get the affiliation. He went to Delhi many times but came with empty hand; he wasgoing on fulfilling the required conditions, meanwhile he consulted, with concerned people,managed to meet IT Director, Secretary of the CBSE Board etc.  As a result we gotimmediate reply. It is our luck that we got affiliation on time.  Otherwise our situationwould have been like one of the schools in spite of submitting all the required documentsstill they are waiting for.  We thank our principal for his great determination and effort toget this achievement. We thank all of you dear Brothers for your prayers and support.On 13th September we had called a parents meeting to share our joy and happiness withthem.  There  was good response. Parents were very happy to listen to the good news.Now their expectation is to have +2.

ST. JOSEPH’S, KONBIR-NOATOLI

On 5th and 6th of September, 40 Brothers of Ranchi Province, gathered at Konbir- Noatoli forcommon discussion about religious life. They had discussion as to how we could improve ourreligious commitment. On 5th morning we had video songs in the chapel to indicate religiousspirit. It was really touching indeed! Some of us were shedding tears on seeing it. We met againon the 6th in Montfort English medium school.  Bro. Provincial was guiding  all through thediscussion. Brothers expressed their problems in their schools and we came to know aboutthem.On 13th September there was a council meeting in Ranchi. Bro.Sushil Toppo was there for themeeting. Bro. Sushil  and Bro. John Berchmans Kullu attended the renewal seminars at Bangalore.

BRO. THOMAS FROM FLORIDA

This comes  from Florida state community college campus USA . We are 15 participants from

India. Most of them are officials holding a very high post and representing government of India

with high qualifications in the technical field. They are in-charge of ITI and polytechnics. Only four

of us are from community colleges meant for  school dropout and economically backward youth.

Community  college system was existing in USA from 1957.  It is a very high quality and most

modern technical education system to train work force for fast growing industrial requirement. The

colleges are well established with latest technology. The education system is a degree course at

university level. Students can choose any trade according to their interest and aptitude. It is not

required to complete the training at one stretch. A student may take several years to complete a

particular trade. It is a credit system. They have to complete stipulated hours of theory and practical

work. It is not necessary to complete the course from one university. During the studies a student

can change the university at any time to any number of universities. Unlike in India transfer is very

easy. The net working is such that once a student is registered in any university the name and follow

up record is available in all the universities in USA. As a result any student can take a transfer to any

university and carry on with the studies. If a student discontinue the studies for some reason or other

he/she can continue even after a few years of break.

The community college system is  supported and financed by the federal government. Its governance

is managed and controlled by the representatives of the state government. It is something like in

India but without corruption and interference. Government finances 30% of the cost and the rest is

managed by tuition from the students. The system of governance is beyond our imagination. Every

aspect is systematic and transparent. Policy decisions are made very fast at top level and implemented

within stipulated time.

As the need for industrial work force is on the increase the government of USA is intending to extent

community college system to train more youth. We are the first group selected for this exposure

programme. India having the highest number of youth in the world USA wants to collaborate with

government of India to train the youth in view of the global workforce requirement.

It is just one week since we are here. We are studying the working system and governance of

community college system and its effects. It is too early to make conclusions with regard to practicality

of this system in Indian context. The concept is very good but our governance system will be an

impediment to execute it. However this system is most suitable for our Province. Catch them young.

Along with the academic studies train them in a skill of their choice . Waiting for the dropouts is late.

Getting them out from schooling with a trade will enable them to be fit for a job and make a living.

At the present scenario this is the most essential aspect in our education system. General education

in class room is no more relevant in Jharkahand. It is essential to rethink our system of education

and adopt a need based system where our children can make a living and a better future. To break

away from the conventional system needs conviction and change of attitude.

Coming back to MTC, the Karma festival was celebrated on 24th with its traditional form with

lots of dancing and festivities. The students were counting down the days for this day to dance

and enjoy the festive mood. The sisters also were fully immersed and made use of this occasion

to get into the mood of Karma. They too danced with the students. As all of them are new to this

culture, it was a new world unlike the Kerala culture. Bro. John Paul being  a Pahan, knew the

rubrics of the festival.

 Sumptuous meal and drink is one of the main parts of this festival. Normally we give a good

chicken dinner. But this year we were privileged to have mutton. Mr. Govind Singh , a good

friend of MTC for the past several years had given a goat for this occasion. This was a reciprocal

token of appreciation for our mutual help, like a friend in need is a friend indeed. He is always

available whenever we are in need.

Bro. John Paul is managing the institution all alone with the help of the staff. He has reorganized

the working style to get best output .This is the season when we get plenty of work orders. The

output and performance of the staff has improved after weeding out some of the incorrigible and

lethargic slow performers who have been a liability and a thorn in the flesh for the past several

years. Now a sense of work culture and commitment is prevailing after motivation along with

incentives for better productive output  .

This is season for winter plants, both flower and vegetable. Under the leadership Bro. John lots

flower plants are being planted. The vegetable garden also has become  green. We always get

garden fresh vegetable. This year we have planted plantain trees along the campus. It is growing

very fast along the drainage of the hostel. The waste water from the hostel is used to grow the

plantain trees. Now there are more than 150 plantain trees with about 10 bunch of plantain. It is

a very profitable cultivation.

Bro. Arogyam the local superior and Headmaster at Dhawaiya  took  special class for 15 days

for our students. Faithfully he was on time at 6.30 pm all the   way from Dhawaiya to take class

on motivation, life coping skills and others. The input sessions were very useful for the students. It

has made an impact in their attitude and life. The students are very grateful to him for taking such

a trouble in-spite of his busy schedule in the school.

PRATYASHA

We were blessed with plenty of rains during July. The farmers are busy in the field fromdawn to dusk. Pratyasha took the initiative to get technical help and demonstration of

seed from the Birsa Agriculture University to reach to the farmers. The Scientists gave trainingto the farmers in the village how to prepare seedling bed for the raising of seedling.  Thecrucial point is that it has to be transplanted in lines within 11-15 days. The weeding is doneby the weedier that will enhance the growth of the plant. It is told that 2kgs of paddy seed issufficient for one Acre of land. The transplantation was done under the guidance of the scientists.They also went into the field to demonstrate the plantation. We hope to have a very goodcrop.

We had a meeting of JPIC under the leadership of  Bro. Pualraj, the Assistant General andBro. Clement, the  Provincial on 19 the July. It was another step to revive the vigour of it. Heremarked that the Provincial administration has to play vital role to help the commission tofunction and implement the GC and Provincial chapter decisions in the Province. He hasgiven various suggestions to execute and evaluate all the programmes within the stipulatedtime. We are grateful to him for stimulating us to wake up from the slumber.

The Scientists from Agriculture University came to the village to help the women groups toinvolve them into the livelihood intervention.  They will provide life stocks to the women toincrease their income.  They will provide cows, goats, pigs and poultry birds. This time wehave taken up two villages. It is a programme for two years. There is a provision to keep aperson as link between the village and the department. She will be paid by the department. Itis also to boost the income and create interest in the programme. They will monitor it andmake it a success story for the women.

The monsoon took a usual U turn in the middle of August when the farmers were busy transplanting the paddy. It prolonged till the fourth week of August. This is the crucial time for thegrowth of the seedling.

We celebrated the 69th year of Independence but its effects are not seen in these villages. Thereis neither irrigation facility nor the basic amenities visible in the villages. All that they got are afew wells, a few unfinished houses which they are using as pens! This attitude can be applied tomany other schemes of the government.

10August 2015:                           A few scientists and two dozen fourth year Agriculture students visited thedemonstration fields of various villages. They got practical knowledge from the fields and farmers.

13 August 2015.The tribals under the banner of  ‘Say no to Land acquisition policy of Govt.’ gathered

in the Namkum Block to register their grievance. The Communist party ex- parliamentarianMrs. Vrinda Karrat  was the Chief guest. She ignited energy in the Tribals in their stand againstthe policy. The crowd collectively affirmed the call resolutely. They presented a memorandumto the Block Development Officer and disbursed.

17 August 2015:We sent 8 boys to Boys Town, Hyderabad for formal

and non-formal ITI. They will add a new chapter of  economic progress intheir lives as many of the previous students have done so far. This institutionstands tall in the country for its incredible way of training the students tocompete  in  the  tough market.  The  leading    industrialists  and  the  localcompanies absorb them as they finish their training. Thanks to all the greatBrothers who touched the lives of lakhs of families.

19August,2015:The Agriculture University Kanke Scientists have selected

100 Tribal families (only women) to provide house stocks – poultry birdand piggery. The focus  is  to economically empower the women to raisetheir income.

22August,2015:We  sent  four  girls  to  Holy Cross  School of Nursing

Karnataka for GNM Nursing. It is a three year course costing Rs.1,80,000/eighty thousand approximately. It is to be returned once they are employed.It  is a revolving  fund. Bro Mark finds out generous people  to meet  theexpenses during their studies. In the mean time he is trying to get scholarshipfor them from the Jharkhand  Govt.  The NB. readers are welcome to helpin any capacity. These candidates will produce progressive citizens fit forthe country/ world.

St.Monica Day was an event for us here. We celebrated it with colourfulprogrammes to tell them that we have an incredible Mother who shaped ourfuture. MOTHER is the most sweet word acknowledged by the world.M=Mentor,  O=Optimist,  T=Teacher,  H=Human,  E=Emotional,R=Resourceful.

ST. ALOYSIUS’ SCHOOL, RANCHI

1. Teacher’s Day Celebration

All the institutions of St. Aloysius’ Campus celebrated Teacher’s Day on 4th Sept. withgreat joy and enthusiasm. On 3rd of Sept. we had thanksgiving Holy Mass after which wehad a very thrilling Volleyball match between High School Staff Vs. Middle School Staff.Unfortunately the match was one sided and it was won by Middle School Staff by 3-0.

2. Brothers’ get-together at NoatoliAll the Brothers of the community were very excited to join Brothers’ get-together at Noatolibut due to ill health two of our Brothers (Joseph Regis and James Dungdung) could notjoin which they regretted much. While returning from Noatoli we visited the house of Bro.Soshek and St. Anne’s Convent Kara.

3. Seminar on Youth Animation

There was a seminar on 8th and 9th September on Youth Leadership for Students of Class VIconducted by Don Bosco Youth Centre Delhi.

4. International Leader Board Challenge:On 10th Sept. the 3rd round of test of International Leader Board Challenge Test was conductedfor the registered students of classes IV to X.

5. Kursveer Children’s Oath Taking Ceremony

On Sept.12th 150 Kursveer Children to be true Krusrveer of Christ had an Oath TakingCeremony at a Solemn Holy Mass organized in our chapel, presided over by Rev. Fr.Pradeep Tirkey SVD, Don Bosco Youth Centre, Ranchi.

6. International Hindi Diwas

14th Sept. on the occasion of international Hindi Diwas, St. Aloysius’ School conducted specialAssembly and several competitions to mark the importance of the day.

7 Seminar on “Year of Consecrated Life”

Bro. Sylvester Surin attended the Seminar on Year of Consecrated Life, which was held from20th t. – 24th Sept at Montfort Sprituality Centre Bengaluru. In the Second group Bro. SoshekTopno went to attend the seminar on the same topic from 25th - 29th Sept. and in the thirdgroup Bro. Edward is going to Montfort Sadan, Pune for the same seminar which is to beheld on 19th – 23rd October.

8.Badminton coaching in St. Aloysius’ SchoolWith much planning and discussion, we have started Badminton Coaching for theStudents for the first time. The response from the students is very positive. The initiativeof Brothers is well appreciated by the Parents and teachers.
