Transcript of You have crossed the threshold Grasmere: Jewel of the Lake...
Congratulations! You have crossed the threshold of the atmospheric, aromatic and hopelessly romantic Grasmere Gingerbread Shop.
Tucked beside St Oswald’s Churchyard in the delightful village of Grasmere, it is the only place in the world where you can buy GrasmereGingerbread®.
Invented by Victoriancook Sarah Nelson in 1854,Grasmere Gingerbread®is unique, a spicy-sweetinfusion that tastes like nothing else on earth.
From 1854 to 1904 The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop was Sarah Nelson’s ‘Church Cottage’ home. Before that it was a 17th century village school where England’s greatest poet William Wordsworth, who lived nearby, occasionally taught local children.
Discover how the original interior has barely changed over the centuries, breathe in the aroma of sweet ginger and stand in the footsteps of visitors from bygone days.
The shop’s ambience is infectious and you can still see Sarah Nelson’s storage pantry and wooden shelves, as well as the sturdy stone sills and curious nooks and crannies that evoke a very different era - a tantalising slice of history frozen in time.
Grasmere Gingerbread® is still made fresh here every day from Sarah Nelson’s secret recipe, now locked away
in a bank vault in Cumbria.
