Pat GrantAge: 25Height: 170 cmDiscipline: KumiteCategory / division: +68

Club / Training center:Kanzenkai Principal coach(es):Nassim Varasteh, Anush Mushfiq Since when have you been practicing karate? :Age 5 What is the best memory of your karateka career (so far!)? :There are a few moments tied for “the best”. The first best moment was earning my junior black belt and 4 years later earning my senior black belt. Both gradings were 4 hours long and at the time, were the toughest mental and physical challenges I have ever endured. Another “best memory” was becoming the 2011 Pan American Karate Champion, and 5 months later, winning the Bronze medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara. The final “best memory” to share here occurred on the following day at the closing ceremonies of the Games. The previous memories were those of personal achievement, however the ceremonies experience in the stadium was more than just attaining a personal achievement; it was an out of body, larger than myself, collective, uplifting experience. It was during this moment where I decided I told myself I will return 4 years later and represent my country again at the 2015 Pan American Games. What does karate bring to you as an individual? :Insight, focus, confidence and knowledge about human psychology and behavior. Who is your favourite karateka and why? :Rafael Aghayev What is the secret to become a karate champion? :The thing that holds people back lies in that they believe there is some “secret”. There is no secret. You simply just have to want it. Not just “kind of want it”, but really want it, so bad that this desire goes beyond determination. There needs to be a certain kind of desperation that will make you, or any athlete, capable of taping into your champion.

Who is your favourite karateka and why? :There are too many!
