UNWAVERING SUPPORT
While reflecting on a remarkable year dominated by two public health crises, only one word came to mind. Unwavering. As an extreme expression of the strength of perseverance; unwavering, steady or resolute in the face of adversity, is the best word to describe what we have seen this year. Your unwavering support of our mission, parents’ unwavering love for their children, and our staff’s unwavering commitment to serving families in the community.
The world was a significantly different place when we began this fiscal year. With your support, the year started with a streamlined focus following a major redesign of our programs. Moving from 18 programs to 7 put us on a path to achieve real, systemic change thanks to precision focus on what we do best.
We’d begun to see the results of this new, focused approach. The Character Effect™ achieved the designation of “evidenced-based” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an important recognition of the positive effect the program is having in schools in our region. Tri-Health expanded their commitment to Parent Connext™, an endorsement of Parent Coaching from pediatricians and their parents who love having access to practical parenting support right in their office. Of course, we’ve continued our work in the community, taking a holistic approach to child welfare through a continuum of related services including Kinship Connections, foster care and adoption, and the Parent Education Program (PEP).
In March the world began to change considerably as the reality and severity of the COVID-19 pandemic in America became apparent. Fortunately, thanks to you, Beech Acres Parenting Center was uniquely positioned to pivot and adapt to face this public health crisis head-on. We quickly moved to serving our clients virtually, interacting with schools and pediatric offices online, and adapting to a safe, socially distant work-from-home environment. All while avoiding laying off any staff and continuing to be responsible stewards of your generous contributions.
May brought a long simmering public health crisis to the forefront, racism in America. While this issue dates to the very foundation of our nation, the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd ignited the most vocal and significant response to racial injustice in decades. While civil unrest has occurred in the past, this time it feels different. Businesses, artists, organizations, sports teams, communities, and individuals have clearly vocalized their support for the Black community through their words, actions, and policy changes.
Again, thanks to you, Beech Acres was positioned to meet this crisis. While we had already created a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Team, the call for racial justice and equality has accelerated our plans. One of the agency’s highest priorities for FY21 will be to develop and execute an anti-racism strategy for those we serve, the systems affecting them, and within Beech Acres itself.
Thanks to your unwavering support of our mission, and parents’ unwavering love for their children, Beech Acres Parenting Center continues our unwavering commitment to inspire and equip parents, families, and communities to raise caring, capable, contributing children. Thank you!
Thank You for your Unwavering Support!

Allison, a Beech Acres Parenting Center Family Engagement Coordinator, provided crisis support and guidance for Jayden’s behavioral issues for several months while encouraging the family to enroll him in services. Allison’s perseverance paid off. Jayden’s mother finally agreed to enroll Jayden in therapy after we engaged an interpreter and addressed his need for emotional support with respect to the family’s cultural values. Jayden no longer has suicidal thoughts. He is proactive in learning to read. His behavior has improved, and he has learned to express his emotions appropriately. Finally, and most importantly, his mother is very engaged in her son’s treatment. Jayden’s improved mental health, success in school, and hopeful future are possible thanks to YOUR unwavering commitment to families in our community.
Your unwavering commitment to families helped Bethany find joy in parenting again. Often, parent coaching sessions begin with tears of frustration but end with tears of joy.
Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic began Bethany began struggling with trying to be a mom, wife, teacher, and employee at the same time. She felt trapped in the four walls of her home and was becoming more hopeless as the shutdown wore on.
She was struggling with her two-year old having multiple meltdowns every day. It was frustrating. Bethany and her husband thought they had tried everything. She was beginning to feel like a failure as a parent.
Bethany was referred to Sarah, a Parent Connext™ Parenting Specialist, by her pediatrician. They met with Sarah virtually, frustrated and exhausted, with tears in their eyes.
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted the family’s schedule, with one benefit being more time together at home. Sarah saw this as an opportunity to help the family slow down, become more intentional in their parenting and to implement mindfulness practices she believed would help. The daily meltdowns have been reduced and when they do occur mom and dad are better equipped to address them together.
You are continuing to make a difference in the community with your unwavering support of our longest, continuously running program, foster care and adoption.
Your support of foster parents like David and Kelly Ritter has a ripple effect throughout the community as they welcome children into their home during a crisis.
“We decided to start fostering when we realized that we could make the time, and we could make the space in our home. We were interested in being able to be a safe place for kids in their time of crisis. That’s also been one of the more rewarding things in foster care for us; being able to tell their bio families we are here to be a safe place for your child as long as it’s needed.” -Kelly Ritter “Being a parent means putting aside your personal hopes and dreams and instead focusing on the collective hopes and dreams of your family. Being a foster parent means, at times, giving up control of what those collective hopes and dreams may be. However, the rewards are immeasurable: watching children from hard places flourish, celebrating victories at school, gaining needed weight, weaning off medications, or watching them smile as they get reunited with their families. Those collective hopes and dreams are what make us who we are; they make us foster parents, and they make us human.” -David Ritter David and Kelly’s unwavering commitment to providing a safe home for foster kids in crisis, and creating a path to reunification with their biological families is only possible because of YOU.
Your unwavering support makes it easy for families to find the mental health support and other resources needed for their children to succeed in school. Jayden was in the 4th grade when his father passed away. Cultural differences and a language barrier made it difficult for him to receive the emotional support he needed as a result of this tragic event. Two years later, in the 6th grade, Jayden was struggling in school. His grades were slipping, and his behavior was out of control. He began having suicidal thoughts.
Your unwavering commitment to creating healthy and thriving classrooms ensured that students and parents had the tools they needed to succeed with learning at home during the pandemic. As soon as schools moved to remote learning in the wake of COVID-19, teachers, parents, and support staff began scrambling to meet the complex social and emotional needs of students who were now learning in their living rooms, kitchens, or makeshift office spaces instead of their normal classrooms. Karen, a special education teacher, saw the impact of The Character Effect™ (TCE) in her school and believed these same strategies could also work at home. She implemented a TCE tool, ‘strength spotting’, at home and with her special education students online. She encouraged other teachers facilitating remote learning for students with special needs to continue the practice. Karen praised her own children for milestones big and small and did the same with her students. She found that spotting strengths and practicing mindfulness helped her students stay focused during remote learning and relieved anxiety and stress brought on by the pandemic. She shared the technique with the parents of her students to help them manage stress in their families’ lives. Karen is a remarkable example of how committed teachers are to our children, even during challenging circumstances. They dig down deep and rally all of their resources to help those they care about the most - their students. Thanks to you, especially during these uncertain times, teachers are able to identify their students’ strengths, reduce stress through mindfulness, and encourage resiliency.

Bethany identified creativity as one of her son’s strengths. This discovery helped her intervene before an outburst got out of hand. Coloring, singing, and reading books together all help calm her son down.
Because of you, Bethany has found joy in parenting again. Thanks to you, parents are able to find practical parenting support right in their child’s pediatrician’s office and are seeing an improvement in their relationship with their children.
Your unwavering support is keeping families together. Donita was surprised when she received an unexpected phone call in October 2017. Her niece’s children were being removed from their home. If a family member were unwilling to step up and care for them, the children would be placed in foster care. Without hesitation, Donita took the children into her home. In the blink of an eye, Donita and her husband shifted from retirement planning to raising three small children. They needed support but were unsure where to turn for help. Fortunately, thanks to you, support was available. Donita learned about Kinship Connections at Beech Acres Parenting Center and signed up for a class. Kinship Connections provides support for hundreds of grandparents and other caregivers in the region who find themselves caring for a loved one’s child. Donita became very involved in classes, not only learning and benefitting from the available resources but also supporting other caregivers by sharing her experiences raising her great nieces and great-nephew. Thanks to you, dedicated caregivers like Donita have access to the resources they need to help their family, even an unexpected family, thrive.
